Bloom's Discovery
Before Bloom became part of the Winx Club, she was living a normal teenager's life. All that changed one day when she discovered that she’s actually a fairy! Now Bloom’s life is anything but ordinary as she uses her magic to fight wicked villains!
The show is just so iconic that I don’t think about a book I think about the show. But Winx Club was my life. The book isn’t bad it’s just not the show
One day someone will look through my reviews, find this marker that I succeeded in doing something regarding this series, and probably look at me and ask "Why? Why did you do it?" And I'll turn, my eyes haunted and unfocused, to zombie-groan something to the effect of "magi...cal...giiiiiiirrrrllllls."
To look at the Winx Club and realize it was a series that debuted with a 4Kids dub when I first started high school is still vaguely mind-boggling, because the franchise is now over 15 years old. When it debuted, I constantly found myself squinting and side-eyeing the series for its frequent animation errors and disjointed storytelling whenever I happened to walk past my sister as she watched it. For years I held a rather negative opinion of the series in regards to what little I'd glimpsed and somehow as I've aged that's morphed into something else entirely. For the past few years I've gone through these moments of intense need to understand why, why this franchise appeals to so many people, and this would be my third time around attempting to really give it a shot.
Thank goodness for this comic. The rips of the first two English dub episodes by 4Kids are just different enough it left me doing a bit of internet digging, and after watching Billiam's video on the series and learning that the editing intentionally chopped up parts of the episode [and thus leads to the disjointed narrative,] I've reached the conclusion that the comic adaptation is a bit more faithful and true to what I expect happens in the original Italian episodes. (I believe at one point I've seen a different dub that also stayed rather true to the original, and I may have to find that version again for a comparison.)
For what it's worth, I do think that while this franchise and thus, this comic are aimed at a specific young girl demographic, the actual art in the comic is very nice and the comic is well-made for what it is. The story is rather easy to follow, and wraps up nicely enough in these recaps of what constitute the first two episodes of season one of the show. All-in-all, I'd argue it's not a bad introduction for a newcomer to the world and the characters. Actually in all honesty, I think it would almost function better solely as a comic than as a show; it certainly seems to be more tolerable that way.
I would not be surprised if I eventually break down and buy the larger omnibus comic that encompasses this volume and the following 8 after it, because if I'm still as predictable as ever, I'm weak for things with magical girls.
I've always been a fan of Winx Club ever since I was a kid. Reading this comic was not only really good but made me nostalgic. Can't wait to read more!
This was just a fun read. Growing up with the show, it was entertaining to reread the story and see the differences in plot. It is faster paced, but overall pretty faithful to the original show. I loved the color schemes, though from years of looking at these characters on a screen, it was jarring to see variations in style. Though...that's more a personal problem and the art overall is great. It's a nice, quick read, which right now, I needed, with a busy schedule. I recommend it to anyone needing an escape from reality.
Contains the first two 'Winx Club' comic stories, lifted almost beat-for-beat from the cartoon. It's nothing I haven't read before. But it's a nice, pretty, cute, sparkling, and funny intro to the comic book series, and a great nostalgic collector's item (let the kids read it too, of course!). It's all about Bloom, and how relatable, aspiring and inspiring that fiery, fairy girl is!
This was MY FAVOURITE book as a child. It brings back so many good memories and feelings of nostalgia. I loved how magical yet somewhat intellectual it was. The characters are all different but the same if that makes sense. I believe that every kid /tween should read this book series at one point or another in life; you would enjoy it more if you are between 7-13 but I'm sure you will like it.
The nostalgia 🥹🫶🏻 I loved and still love this show so much, and reading this book reminded me of why I love it so much! ❤️ Bloom being 16 and now me being 16 is so weird, I was very young when I started the show. 🥲
Bloom's Discovery V1 PLOT: Veranda of Callisto (otherwise known as Bloom) is accepted into Winx (School of Fairies) after an encounter in the park and discovering she has magic and comes to the rescue of Stella (a fairy with sass). Stella introduces her to room-mates Musa, Techna, & Flora. And the ladies decide to spend the day at a pizza place in Gardenia. But it turns out they aren't the only ones. Knox (sidekick of the Witches of Cloud Tower) has been sent to relive Stella of her magical scepter. When the Witch's make an appearance (Icy, Darcy, and Stormy) Bloom gains her fairy powers for the first time. Soon after she comes clean to the rest of the girls and the heads of the school (who allow her to stay seeing as she's clearly magical). But who is she? All the Earth fairies were said to have vanished a long time ago.
MY THOUGHTS: I had no idea this was a comic. Although I shouldn't be surprised. I first found out by looking up some stuff trying to figure out where World Of Winx on Netflix fits into the timeline. Not that I'm one of those people who gets obsessive over where things go. Just curious. The illustrations for this comic are beautifully done and stay true to the characters & episode from which it's taken! The comic starts not where the episode does (surprisingly) and skips all over the attack in the park between Knox and Stella. Rather it flashes back to prior moments. If you like comics (and series) about GIRL POWER and MAGIC this is definitely for you! Typical intro for a magic series. Earth kid discovers they have magic. Then get sent to a magical school. Then there's a bad guy/villain. Then there's some kind of showdown of good vs evil battle of magical powers. But they give us a teaser at the end that makes you wonder who Bloom really is and what her story will be. As this is the first one we just get a surface introduction to each girl. Such as Flora's love of plants. Techna's gift with technology etc. We also get the Witch's introduction (Icy, Darcy, and Stormy) and display of their powers. Which I gotta say was pretty freaking AWESOME!
RATING: 8 Introduced to me by a good friend this issue (episode) begin my love of Winx!
I enjoyed being able to read Winx Club in a manga/comic book format. However, as an avid follower of the television series and book series, I did find several discrepancies within the storyline of this series. There were several details within this story that were quite different in comparison to the original television series, and I found that to be quite annoying while reading. Overall, I felt that they did a great job with the illustrations and storyline (in general) and I look forward to any new editions that may come out in the future.
My daughter LOVED this book. My daughter is never really enthusiastic about reading because she has a hard time with comprehension. I never thought of comic type books. She is continuously reading it over and over. Thank you so much for this book, I need to go get the rest of the series quickly before she puts this one down! :-)
Too cute, love the graphics and the story. This series would be a great gift for any little girl. Right from wrong, good from bad, teamwork, and friendship are some of the lessons they will learn from the stories. Will be buying this entire series for my granddaughter, and maybe even a niece or two.
Whereas Tinker Bell and friends are sweet and innocent, the Winx Club fairies are cool and ready to take on any challenge, or enemy that comes their way. The TV series is reproduced in graphic novel format.
