It's not in bodyguard Jake Cantrell's job description to share his suspicions with his assignments. Beautiful executive Sage Dumont may be in charge, but Jake's not on her payroll. As a former special forces marine, Jake trusts his gut, and it's telling him there's something off about a shipment arriving at Marine Drilling International. His instinct is aroused…in more ways than one.
A savvy businesswoman, Sage knows better than to take some hired gun's "hunch" as gospel. And yet she is learning not to underestimate the man her grandfather hired to protect her. Determined to prove Jake wrong, Sage does some digging of her own and turns up deadly details she was never meant to see.
Drawn into a terrifying web of lies and deceit—and into feelings they can't afford to explore—what Jake and Sage uncover may be frighteningly worse than they ever imagined.
Kathleen Kelly was born on 14 July 1947 in the Central Valley of California, USA. She obtained a degree in Anthropology and also studied History at the University of California in Santa Barbara. She was a real estate broker, when she met her future husband, Larry Jay Martin. A short time after the two became acquainted, Larry asked her to read an unpublished manuscript of an historical western he'd written. Kat fell in love with both the book and the author! Then, after doing some editing for him, she thought she'd try her own hand at writing. She moved on to become a full time writer.
Published since 1988, she signed her books with her married name, Kat Martin, but she also used two pseudonyms: Kathy Lawrence for a book in collaboration with her husband Larry Jay Martin, and Kasey Mars for her first contemporary romances. The New York Times bestselling writer, among her many awards, has won the prestigious RT Book Review Magazine Career Achievement Award. To date, Kat has over eleven million copies of her books in print. She has been published in seventeen foreign countries, including England, South Africa, Spain, Argentina, Germany, Italy, Greece, Norway, Sweden, Russia, Bulgaria, China, and Korea.
Currently residing with her husband, a Western-writer and photographer, in Missoula, Montana, USA. But when they are not writing, they also enjoy skiing and traveling, particularly to Europe.
"I've always loved books. I was an avid reader, with any number of my own stories rolling around in my head. Writing them down seemed a logical step."
"I love anything old," Kat says. "I love to travel and especially like to visit the places where my books are set. My husband and I often stay in out-of-the-way inns and houses built in times past. It's fun and it gives a wonderful sense of a by-gone era."
The another Harlequin suspense novel I read recently Shades of Desire set the bar of expectations pretty low for me especially in terms of characterisations, and this one passed the test with flying colours.
Both Jake and Sage (I had to check their names from the blurb and I only finished reading this book a couple of hours ago) stayed consistent to their original characterisations. Whatever they learned during this story--that would be to love and cherish each other despite the risks and their differences--was on the very first page. The events unfolding only allowed them to discover those facets of themselves.
The book definitely didn't read like a forced plot where the characters were paper-thin figurines acting out a scripted choreography that didn't make any sense.
Instead of lugging through something physically painful (the exceeding eye rolling gives nasty headaches) I got to stumble on the little things. Such as the excessive focus on Jake's erection, the ridiculousness of someone used to be pampered carrying her own shopping bags (especially since the place closed down to receive them privately), a man liking expensive suits but not expensive enough to have them tailored to hide his firearm, or the time when Jake tasted the sour coffee with his stomach.
Do, please, remember that any of these items listed above come from an uncorrected proof and could be fixed in the final product. Still, even if all those things were fixed, I wouldn't be rating this book any higher.
That's because of the characterisations. Didn't I just praise them? I did, but that doesn't stop me from lamenting over the fact that Sage couldn't have one physical thing, a hobby she loves, where she could best Jake. Oh, no. Of course Jake of all trades is a competent rider too. That was the point where I started mentally checking out and found myself nodding off on occasion.
The other thing is the handling of a foreign culture. Sage is trying to strike a deal with a Saudi-Arabian sheik over a used oil drilling platform. I appreciated the care Martin showed when she had Sage prepare for the negotiations and learn about a Muslim culture. In fact, I thought she handled the whole subject well, but I'm not an expert and I wouldn't know where to start picking these things apart.
That was a lie. I do know. I'd start at the ending, which featured the Sheik quite unnecessarily. All in all the epilogue was a big pile of unnecessary fluff that only served to please those who truly are fans of Martin's books and this series. Aside from the unnecessary in-your-face happy ending, the conclusion of Jake and Sage's relationship felt rushed. They were doing so great up until the last tenth of the book that I was moderately disappointed with the genre dictated ending.
As for the villain behind the suspense, he was easy to pick out the first time he walked in a scene. I was hoping his accomplice would have been someone else though. I'm still waiting to read a book where an obnoxious character is only that and not behind all the trouble. I only complain out of love.
All in all, Against the Sun was a decent, entertaining read, though, nothing groundbreaking.
I received an Advanced Readers Copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.
Sage Dumont needs to win a contract for used drilling equipment to ensure her promotion. Somebody wants her to fail, and it's bodyguard Jake Cantrell's job to see that nothing goes wrong. But when Jake and Sage stumble upon a plot more deadly than they can imagine, the ante is upped and they must combine forces just to survive.
Jake Cantrell is good at his job. Private investigator and mercenary, the tough ex-special forces marine has been hired as a bodyguard by Sage Dupont’s grandfather. Sage, an upcoming VP, wants to earn her promotion to president and feels clinching a deal between the Saudis for purchase of used pipe and platform drilling equipment is her key to success. When Jake arrives at the marine Drilling International offices, they get off on a bad start. Sage doesn’t think she needs a bodyguard, but her grandfather feels differently. Furthermore, Cantrell’s uncanny intuition for suspecting shady dealing is aroused, and he’s going to see that Sage is protected.
Initially, Sage must entertain the Saudi sheik’s family and entourage, then negotiate the deal. On the surface things appear to be going well between Sage and the Saudis, but when Jake overhears disturbing news, he fears much more than a transaction for used pipe is in the works. Moreover, he’s attracted to Sage and doesn’t want to compromise her or his position to protect her.
Tension sizzles in this contemporary story. As usual, Ms. Martin has come up with a plot that offers nonstop suspense mixed with the usual high-octane testosterone so prevalent in her books. Both Jake and Sage are nicely drawn, three-dimensional characters a reader can care about. The fast-paced plot is not only fascinating but provides lots of information about Middle Easterners and their customs. I was fascinated.
Secondary characters were great. I became so interested in the hunky PI’s at Trace Rawlins’ company. I can’t wait to read their stories.
Against the Sun has wonderful characters, great pacing and nonstop suspense. And if you like a sexy hero, then Jake Cantrell will satisfy your every craving.
Against the Sun is the sixth novel in the Raines of Wind Canyon series by Kat Martin. These are romantic suspense novels which deal with ex-military men and the woman who capture their hearts. Each is designed to be read as a standalone. As always this reader prefers to read them in order. I like to get a sense of all the players and enjoy knowing the back-history. Against the Sun held my attention from page one and I was swept away.
In this novel we finally get Jack Cantrell’s story. He is a former special force marine who now works security jobs all over the world. He loves the ladies and respects them, but has no intention of settling down. Recently he has been doing work for his buddy’s security business in Houston. The tale begins with him arriving at the offices of Marine Drilling International. He has been asked to act as bodyguard for Sage Elizabeth Durmont as she entertains a Saudi sheik and his family. She is negotiating a multi-million dollar deal to buy a used oil drill platform and piping. She needs to understand customs, and be protected from those who oppose the deal. Sage doesn’t think she needs Jack’s help, but her grandfather insists. She plans on letting this sexy jar-head know exactly who the boss is. Jack is not happy with having to deal with the breathtakingly beautiful and privileged executive. He figures she is a spoiled brat, who got her position due to birth. The tale that unfolds is filled with sexual tension and action packed drama, as threats are made against Sage and the sheik.
Martin provides well fleshed out characters who make the tale feel genuine. Sage at times got on my nerves. Her wavering on decisions in her personal life made me crazy. I know she is a careful planner, but as a top executive in a cut throat business, I expected her to make decisions and stick with them. I did love the way she did what was morally right, even at the cost of business. Jake is complicated, and always in motion. He has a strong moral compass and despite some Neanderthal tendencies is completely swoon-worthy. They are both convinced that what they have is a fling and that it could never work. Watching the two of them discover that with love all things are possible, was fantastic! Other characters including the Sheik’s family helped round out the tale and make the drama compelling.
The story line is fast paced, and there are many different components. All of which kept me delightful engaged. There is the business deal and a fiance' to deal with. The sheik's daughter is delightful and I loved her story line. The son is dark and his tale is filled with danger. The attacks occurring could be related to the deal or a personal attack against Sage. Watching Jack and his team piece together the clue and save the day was an awesome ride. Martin has an amazing ability to weave different plot threads together creating suspense and mystery. She has created a group of male characters that woman cannot help but fall in love with. I adore that she pairs them with strong, capable woman.
I recommend Against the Sun and the Raines of Canyon series to fans of romantic suspense and swoon-worthy men. I am looking forward to the next book in the series. Kat Martin writes romances novels in all genres from paranormal to historical. I have read quite a few and enjoyed them, so be sure and check them out.
I want to thanks Harlequin and netGalley for providing this ARC in exchange for my unbiased review.
Can you ever mix business with pleasure successfully?
Sage Dumont learned the oil business from the bottom floor up and earned her position. She is determined to close the biggest deal ever for the family business and nothing will stop this Texas family from moving into the Middle East oil territory. No amount of threats, bad press, or a hot bodyguard is going to distract her. Wait Jake Cantrell is my bodyguard, not my personal dream of a man right. The one thing Jake knows is how to do security detail and keep his client safe, but no one told him he hand to keep his hands to himself.
Jake does his best to keep Sage from being blown to bits by someone opposed to her deal his hands are full. She is used to being the boss and has Houston society flowing from her every pore yet Jake is not intimidated and sees her as a challenge that will be mastered. Sage is a constant surprise in the boardroom and Jake envisions the same for the bedroom, now he has to figure out how to get her there. Jake has never mixed business with pleasure but right now that is all he wants to do.
Sage and Jake work as a team to figure out what scenario is playing out behind the scenes. There are risks at stake that go beyond Sage’s company right into the hands of Homeland Security, or so they suspect. Can this executive and her bodyguard stop potential terrorists before something worse than the deal blows up?
When you count your reading blessings, make sure you are grateful that Kat Martin always has another book in the works. Ms. Martin defines the meaning of a phenomenal writer and proves it with every piece of literature she has produced.
Probably my first mistake was not recognizing this as a romance novel. I thought I'd try a thriller written by a woman...but all this book did was annoy my (usually latent) feminist side. Apparently what women readers want is for a huge man (the book can't stop about how big the hero is) to come and lead us around. He is constantly putting his large hand on the small of the heroine's back and directing her places, which fills her with relief. Amidst ordering her food for her (which she also finds comforting), he bosses her around and overrides her suggestions. I maybe could have overlooked all this for a great story or convincing romance, but since this book lacks both I was just left with the annoying stuff. DNF.

100.0% 4.5 stars! I loved this - it was a lot better than the last couple in this series! Jake and Sage were perfect together! The only reason its not a 5 is because it took me a while to really get into it! I mean I always liked the characters and the plot but I could easily step away from it :) I hope that makes sense :)
Jake is a former special forces marine. He’s assigned to guard Sage, a beautiful businesswoman who happens to be engaged to a guy named Phillip who she is not really attracted to. Sparks fly between Sage and Jake almost instantly although they got off on the wrong foot. Sage is irritated by her growing attraction to Jake. He’s domineering and Sage is used to being in charge so it bothers Sage that he gets to boss her around. Meanwhile Jake is unable to stop thinking about getting Sage into his bed. Just looking at her in her yellow business suit gets him all hot and bothered in public and he can barely control his sexual attraction toward her. I rolled my eyes a lot at this. They had known each other for only a couple of days. I didn’t know yellow business suits were that sexy but anyway. At this point I couldn’t even remember what Sage looks like besides the fact that Jake admired her round butt. So I can’t even really picture her in this ultra sexy yellow business suit.
It was pretty decently written, usually my main complaint with romance novels is poor writing, but I wasn’t too bothered by the writing here. It had a nice flow to it.
As a demisexual person, instalust/instalove isn’t really my thing, although I can often overlook it. It seems really unbelievable to me but it can be entertaining to read (and roll my eyes at sometimes) I guess. However, I really hate male characters who are womanizers and pigs. So, I couldn’t really overlook the instalust because I didn’t like Jake.
I did skim ahead to see the sex scenes because I was curious and they were all dreadfully boring.
Example of why I didn’t like Jake:
“You knew Sage was the assignment? Why the hell didn’t you say something?”
Annie just smiled. “Cause I was afraid you’d say no. You know how you can be when it comes to women.”
Jake frowned. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
“It means you think a woman has only one job, and that’s to keep you entertained in bed. You aren’t interested in a female who might stand up to you. Sage Dumont is just as used to being in charge as you are. That has to chap your behind but good.” -page 26
I always liked Jake from the very beginning of this series. He's a hot tall drink of water who also happens to be an expert sniper. Sage comes along and blows his closed heart wide open. Great characters and awesome stories to this series.
Sage Dumont is a driven executive at her grandfather’s oil company in Texas. The grandfather hires Jake Cantrell as security when protests erupt surrounding a visit from a Saudi business associate. The side story of the Saudi family was interesting, although probably very unrealistic. The parallels in the book between the sheikh’s daughter and Sage gave more depth to the stories, in that both women struggled to balance their own happiness with family expectations. Sage and Jake’s love story was heartwarming with some spice and adventure. I read the ebook. 4/5
It was a pleasure to review, Against The Sun (The Raines of Wind Canyon) by Kat Martin. This is a book from The AGAINST Series and can stand alone without having to read another book in the series before since Kat doesn't just throw names from other books without a small description so the reader isn't lost. After you read this book though, you will want to read the rest of the series to learn about the fascinating people of the Atlas Security Firm. Not only does this storyline take you through the meeting and developing relationship of the two main characters, Sage and Jake, but also introduces the reader to quite a few subplots—ex-fiancés, bombings, drug smuggling; as well as people I am hoping will be following with possibly their own books since they were written so well and makes a person very much interested in getting to know more about those storylines.
Everyone in this book has a purpose for being there and they aren't just thrown in to fill in space. Ms. Martin has a way of introducing people long enough to hook you into wanting more and more about them without you wondering where the character has disappeared to a few pages later.
Sage Dumont is a woman who worked her way up in her grandfather's oil company. She comes off as a rich girl with an attitude until you find out more about her childhood and the life she had. She is feisty and very driven yet not as all-knowing as she thinks when her world and Jake's world collide. Jake Cantrell is an alpha romance hero who is more then just what people assume when they meet him, he's not some caveman-type who tries to take over any for egocentric reasons. He realizes that to get where she is in the industry, Sage has had to become a strong and determined woman and he finds his own way to work with her even though she thinks she can do it herself. It's fun to read Jake and Sage's points of view change and mature from the beginning of their relationship as the story progresses.
I always think if a book can play out like a well-written movie then the writer has done the job and Ms. Martin has done a fantastic job. Her attention to detail throughout the book allows you to envision everything around the characters and become a supporting character yourself (while staying out of trouble). This book doesn't fail to connect with you when you read it because of her attention to detail and the way she plays the scenes as they follow each other seamlessly. You are drawn into the world of Big Oil Industry and all the players in that world and I couldn't turn pages fast enough to find out what was going on with the subplots and how they merged with the overall larger picture of the story.
A little better than the last book in the series, but not quite as good as the first book in the second trilogy of this series.
Series Note: Sixth book in the "Raines of Wind Canyon" series, and third book in the second trilogy of the series. I don't think you have to have read the other books first. They stand pretty well on their own.
Summary: Sage Dumont, one of the vice presidents of her family's Marine Drilling corporation, is about to close on a huge deal to buy some used drilling equipment from Saudi Arabian sheik. Unfortunately, some people are not happy about the deal and her grandfather hires Jake Cantrell to be Sage's bodyguard until the negotiations are complete.
At first, Jake and Sage set each other on edge, but attraction quickly takes over. The more they learn about each other, the more they want each other. Unfortunately, someone doesn't want Sage to make her deal. And to make matters worse, they learn some disturbing information related to the sheik's visit to the U.S. Jake and Sage have to race to find answers. And when its over, neither is sure they'll be able to walk away from each other.
Review: I liked this book for the most part. I thought it had a more interesting plot than the last book in the series.
The plot is is dual-faceted in that there are two different things going on that Jake and Sage have to find answers. But the two aspects work well together very well. I thought the author did a good job building a fairly realistic, well-developed storyline that kept me interested and reading.
I also enjoyed the two characters. Jake's a sexy loner with a big heart. Sage is a woman with a strong sense of loyalty to her grandfather. And thankfully, she's mostly lacking the TSTL gene the heroines of the previous two books had. These two together had good chemistry and the internal battles they faced over whether they could be together gave the relationship a lot of realism.
Overall, it was a pretty well done story. Nothing absolutely great but above average, definitely. I enjoyed it and it kept me reading, wanting to know how everything would work out. And the author did a good job of setting up the characters for the next trilogy. I'll be looking forward to reading about them.
Against the Sun The Raines of Wind Canyon by Kat Martin ISBN: 9780778313502 Jake Cantrell's job was to watch over Ian Dumonds granddaughter while the Saudia Arabia sheik was in town with his family. Sage Elizabeth didn't think she needed a bodyguard. She's engaged to Phillip so Jake is not a threat to getting serious over. Interesting to learn so much about Muslims and their customs. Sage has them lined up to shop one day where the stores they want to visit will shut down to the public while they are there. Another trip is to the family ranch to ride horses and stay overnight. Then onto the talks of the sale-the main reason why the Sheik is there. Jake follows some of the son and cousins talk about drugs, shipment and money and doesn't like the sounds of it. He thinks as he's been away from the country for a long time that he's gotten the words translated wrong. His other ex Marine friends are close by and have helped with guarding and escorting when he's needed them. Sage's friend Rina likes Alex, one of the extra men but she's living with Ryan who's away for a few days. Sage was slowly but surely forgetting about Phillip and concentrating more on Jake, she had only kissed him once. Missing person, drugs, betrayals, bombs going off and sex are just a few more things to look forward to in this book. Just when you think the whole book is done, finish has been written, other things have come to light ...
These books are continuously driving me insane!! I am constantly tapping my foot as I sit waiting, NOT patiently, for the next book to come out. They're like a drug you can't get enough of, and each one is a new hit (not that I would know but I'm sure it's similar....). In this novel of Martin's, Jake Cantrell is his usual badass former Marine self, but he is making the effort to become a part of the community and his friends' lives again. Sage Dumont finally has the chance to prove herself to her grandfather and become President to the family company. She thinks she knows what she wants, but then again she is just about to meet Jake when he's hired as her personal bodyguard. Unfortunately, Jake doen't share his women so Sage is off limits due to her engagement to Phillp Stanton...a worthless jerk and a pain in the ass for Jake. Sage is in the middle of an oil deal with a Sheik from Saudi Arabia when things begin to spiral out of control. The Sheik's son is dealing drugs for his own money, and then his daughter decides to run away in an effort to have her own life outside of traditional customs. To top it off, somebody wants Sage dead so they can be President of the company. Full of twists and excitement, Agaimst the Sun is a book full of people trying to change their fate and learn to love again, or for some people the for the first time.
I really love the 'Against' series. What is not to love about macho hunks saving ladies in distress. This is Jake and Sage's story. There's a 'Your Highness' - a Saudi prince, a drug deal, a high stakes business deal, a runaway daughter, a devious co-worker and much more to keep your interest all the way through. As much as I love these books, they are starting to have a formula feel, but they have edge of the seat suspense and hot sex. Sage was a bit of a disappointment in that she was really needy, not very brave and had a hard time accepting Jake for who is was.
Against the Sun is titillating romantic trash, masquerading as a suspense novel. Its narrative is entirely predictable, without a single twist or turn that couldn't be readily anticipated. I elected reluctantly to read the entire book for no other reason than to be fair in my review. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone. My only solace is that this novel is part of the series "The Raines of Wind Canyon," so I know enough to avoid the rest of the collection.
I started this series out of order and it captured me. Real men not macho but masculine and kind. All of the characters are interesting and the suspense and surprise outcomes amazing
I never got to the point where I actually believed that Jake loved Sage for much more than her appearance. He is too wrapped up in being macho and showing her he’s boss… then getting her in bed. Again. And again. And again. (I hope to never hear the word virile again. What was the author’s obsession with that word?!)
I also found it hard to believe that Sage legitimately worked her way up to VP of a large company because we saw none of that side of her. She felt very generic and only there to be a damsel for Jake. I didnt even get the impression that she was overly smart. I prefer believably strong female characters.
Jake and his whole crew tend to say and think like they are the best thing on the planet and no other human could be as good as them. All other men are lesser. Women are lesser. Heck, in the first scene he is disrespectful to her because he thinks she is a secretary. He doesn’t even really feel bad about it, only a little embarrassed that he said it to someone in that position of power. I don’t care if she was a secretary, the way he commented was rude.
It also really annoyed me the jab at Rina’s bf at the end. The narrator is describing people sitting around at an event and he’s at a table with Rina and others and the author decide to add that he was probably boring everyone talking about computers. Before that, we pretty much just got that he’s a safe, nice guy. Maybe Rina wants more excitement, but good heavens. Now he’s insufferably boring and poor in social settings? Ugh.
I seriously thought about gluing pages together to keep other readers from going through this - need I say- drivel. I am NOT a fan of romances, (which I why I gave it a two-star rating) and thought it would be something like, and was ready to compare it to, the novel I had just read, Guardian of the Horizon by Elizabeth Peters. NOT. Sage would NEVER have been able to negotiate a deal with the Saudis without her grandfather in attendance, she was SO unprepared for their customs, among a hundred other things. Jake was NOT an agent AT ALL anywhere in the world, unless he was 65 years old and missing a few screws (no pun intended) -- it was all about f___ing! Yes, I read the whole thing, skipping the untoward bits, and finished it in about two days having some social things to attend to in the meantime. Like I said, I would have glued three pages together every five pages or so . . . Ugh.
This book was different for me. I hardly know anything about fishing - but I think I can understand how it can captivate. This author starts out with a small cast out into the water but catches nothing. She casts a little farther and is awarded a nibble. She casts again and is rewarded with a small fish. This keeps going until I am beginning to think this book will never catch the “big” one. I even put this book down a time or two. Wow it was difficult to try to figure out who the bad guys were. Even though you kind of figured out most of them right away. Just when you thought you had it figured out, the author pulled back on the line.
I loved the hero. He had a moral compass. BUT, he has suspicions about 3 vice presidents but only seems to be investigating 2. He leaves out the one the heroine is/was engaged to. That doesn't make much sense. The heroine is caught up in making her grandfather happy. It takes her far to long to figure out what she wants, and even then she needs her grandfather's permission to go for it. I feel like it was just done to add a little drama and a few more pages to the book. I did like the book, just not as much as some previous ones
I was excited for Jake's story and it didn't disappoint. This story will keep you on your toes. It's sexy, romantic, informative. It's so fast paced and full of action, it would make a great movie! Jake might be my favorite of Kat Martin's heroes so far. He's incredibly sweet and caring, but gruff and masculine in an obvious way. He's totally sure of himself. Sage has a lot to learn throughout this beautiful story about love and learning what truly matters in life. Overall, one of the best!
I loved this book and was hooked from page one. Jake was hired by Sage’s Grandfather to keep her safe while negotiating a business deal. Loved their instant chemistry. Loved the suspense level and how there’s a terrorist plot they helped deflect. Had some tears towards the end but so glad they finally got their happy ever after. I highly recommend this book.
There's never a dull moment when reading a Kat Martin book. They are filled with love, humor, suspense and intrigue. Jake found his woman but almost lost her. So many things were coming at her from different angles at the same time she almost didn't have time to duck. Very exciting.
Sage Dumont is negotiating the purchase of used oil drilling equipment on half of her grandfather’s business. The seller is a Saudi Prince. When protesters of the deal turn hostile, security guards are hired to provide protection. Jake Cantrell is assigned to guard Sage. Despite the threats, Sage and Jake cannot deny their mutual attraction.
It moved sorta slow, I understand that some stuff had to be explained. However, I wish there was a way to tell the story and the extra explanations better. Besides that it was your typical Kay Martin storyline.
Another great story in this series. I have read about four or five of the books in the Siri and they do not disappoint. I fell in love with the characters. The story seems so real. Great job to the author. Can’t wait to read the next book in this series
Jake Cantrell is introduced as another member of the special forces team. As a bodyguard/everything else he protects Sage from herself mostly. Good suspense. Good romance.
