Claustrophobic friends beware...most of this book takes place in tunnels under a historic university. Including rats, cave-ins, sudden floods, blocked passageways, and shooting!
It's an intrigue about lost art, and of course there are plenty of people who catch the lust of treasure at thought of a discovery of a priceless painting by a master. Is the crime for one mastermind or several dedicated treasure hunters? I did guess the main player at about 65%, but there are plenty of twists and turns and things to be solved even after that.
This is certainly NOT literature!! But for a road trip, where I had little time to really think, but needed some plot to relax with, it worked. It has just enough reference to God and belief to get the attention of Christian publishers. Just enough romance to satisfy romance readers and a little mystery thrown in. A lot of "getting in trouble in tunnels"--so the claustrophobic should beware! It was not hard to put down when I couldn't read, but I enjoyed relaxing with it when I had a minute. Not a book I'd save or give to anyone.
When we road travel, we always stop in Julesburg, Colorado, at the welcome center and they have a trunk of books to take or leave for the traveler. It will be shared there the next time through.
In Mentink’s inspiration romantic suspense novel, Brooke Ramsey is running out of time in her efforts to save her father’s reputation. Teaming up with Victor Gage to locate a missing painting, they draw closer to each other as a murderer prepares to kill again to keep his secrets. Believable characters but the story is a bit sluggish.
What a wild treasure hunt! I enjoyed this story and all the twists and turns it took deep in the tunnels under the university! Could have enjoyed it more without the rats!!! But I guess for accuracy sake even the rats are needed. Looking forward to the other books in this series.
Spoiler alert -- don't read this if you're claustrophobic. Lots of threads to follow in this romantic suspense. A past event that affected both hero and heroine makes them reluctant partners at first, but they grow to care for one another as much as clearing the past that injured them.
Dana Mentink’s Lost Legacy tells of a sweet Christian girl, determined to protect her father’s reputation, and the strong but wounded Treasure Seeker she asks to help her. Both characters hide secrets, and the author reveals their backstories with nice timing as the novel progresses.
Victor was a doctor once. Now he hides his heart and hunts treasure. He has two siblings, each hiding their own mysteries, and a grave determination to avenge his wife’s death. But when his need for revenge tangles with Brooke’s search for justice, sparks might fly.
Secret passages, mysterious maps, hidden symbols and threats of sudden death combine in this enjoyable fast read. I might complain at some unconvincing chess notation, but the fast-paced story kept me turning pages. The danger’s exciting, the characters have pleasing depths, and the elements of faith are enjoyably unforced, making this a fun romantic suspense, for adult or young adult, with plenty of scope for more to come in the series.
Disclosure: I won a free copy during a blog tour. Lucky me!
Brooke Ramsey is running out of time to clear her father's name and she's depending on Victor Gage to do that for her. The greatest problem is that Victor thinks her father is guilty. I've started to read romantic suspense lately. I especially like a book that grabs me at the first page and doesn't let go until I get to the end. I love Lost Legacy for these same reasons. It grabbed me from the first page with the first bit of action and kept me reading until the last page. When I find a book I enjoy, very little deters me from completing it. The character development was wonderful and I found that the solution was equally fitting. I can't wait to read the next book in Dana's series!
I won this book on first reads. It was very good with lots of adventure and suspense. I even found a recipe for grilled cheese and tomato sandwiches in the book that we decided to make for supper tonight!
Lost Legacy by Dana Mentink is the first book in the Treasure Seekers series. Brooke Ramsey is desperate. Her father is sick and Brooke needs to find his missing painting before it's too late. Her father was framed four years prior of orchestrating an art heist. She knows finding this missing painting could be what can give him back the respect he lost when he was framed. That's why she seeks help from Victor Gage, owner of Treasure Seekers Agency, despite the fact that he believes her father is guilty. Victor has other motives for wanting to find the painting. The same heist that cost Brooke's father his job at the museum is the same reason his wife is dead, killed when the getaway driver crashed into them. As they search the tunnels under a university, they run into several deadly situations. In the end, when the real culprit behind the heist comes forward, Victor realizes Brooke is the treasure he'd been searching for. Not some painting. Not his wife's killer. Not all the questions he had but could never find answers to. Her.

Heather's Notes This book took me a long time to read. I stuck it in my beach bag and there it stayed. So I only read it when I went to the beach which is maybe once a year. I did like the story. Brooke and Victor were good together. However, this was a bit like a Harlequin romance so it was easy to put aside. However, if you are looking for a nice simple read this is it.
This is an intriguing and suspenseful mystery. Treasure hunting, searching an old tunnel system under a university, not knowing who to trust, and seeking the truth. I enjoyed this book, first in a trilogy about the Gage siblings, the Teaseure Seekers.
I enjoyed this book. It kept up a fast pace and the mystery and plot twisted as it went. The main people were likeable.I wanted Brooke to find the missing art work and clear her father.
Fragile X Syndrome. It sounds like something out of Marvel comics, but there ya go. Totally real. I wish it had a more dignified name. The more I read it without researching, the more it sounded like the title of an early Image comic. It's not what the plot is based on, but it is a major part of the heroine's baggage, especially since already plagues her father and brother.
I literally just finished this book, and I am struggling to remember what it was about. I know that Brooke wants to find a rare painting with the help of the Treasure Seekers agency/firm/whatever (another name I am not in love with) and Victor, one of the Treasure Seekers, is a big fat jerk about basically everything.
His excuse for being awful all the time is that his wife is dead (which, I'm sorry, doesn't give him a license to act like this) and he's wasted the last four years of his life in shutting down and funnelling all of his energy into REVENGE. He goes on and on about being "black and white" and that's his excuse for treating Brooke like The Enemy and pretty much telling her to her face that she is The Enemy ALL THE TIME. I found him tiresome and remarkably self-absorbed.
Apparently there was a museum heist wherein the getaway driver killed Mrs Victor's Wife, and his twisted sense of REVENGE means that he has to grind into the dirt the person/people behind the heist because they are so responsible for her death. Which I guess I can see, but because Brooke is related to one of the suspects, that means he has to hate her and treat her like garbage.
For some reason, finding this rare painting will exonerate her father? Or is it just that it will make him happy and so she has to get it while he still has enough lucidity?
Lost Legacy begins with Brooke Ramsey trying to hire Victor Gage, the owner of Treasure Seekers Agency, to help her find a missing painting worth a fortune.
At first he’s not interested, but when she tells him she thinks she’s being followed – and he catches her in the lobby, just before someone outside the building begins shooting – he gets involved - fast!
Wow! Dana Mentink does a great job leading her characters (and her readers) through several twists and turns, while searching for the missing painting.
I don’t want to give away any spoilers, so you need to read this book for yourself – but it’s a great mystery – and if you plan to read the series, it’ll be much better (in my opinion) if you start here, with Lost Legacy.
Yes! It has drama… action… and danger… once again, I didn’t put it down until I was finished.
A treasure lost, a family illness, danger in tunnels but where is the real danger? It isn't in a painting, revenge, and more. Lives ruined because of wrong decisions by others. Our decisions affect more than ourselves. Danger in the tunnels of a College. Enemy tries turning us away from the truth much as he tried in the tunnels to turn others away from what they sought after. Love is the right way. Learning to open up to admit to mistakes. Learning to let our heart lead us. Family not what one believes at times. So many trials lead to the true treasure. Be sure and read
The timeline of Victor and Brooke's relationship spans several days, so the gradual awakening of their feelings as they search for her father's missing painting makes sense. I particularly like that both of them realize people are the real treasure.
Absolutely loved this book! Unique plot and great adventure! Secret tunnels and a hidden painting are just two of the twists here! Dana Mentink writes the best adventure type romantic suspense!
