Security specialist John Dawson thought his latest investigation into a building's collapse would be an open-and-shut case…until he met Juliana Caprese. Juliana's suspicions about what really happened that fateful day forced John to take a closer look at all the suspects. Starting with his notorious family. But before he could dig too deep, John found himself dodging bullets to protect the incredibly determined—and strikingly beautiful—Juliana. Obviously they were on the right path, but the idea of losing his rookie "partner" proved their relationship was becoming more personal than professional. Now, this unknown enemy didn't scare him half as much as how Juliana would react when she found out who he really was….

Good book. Dawson went to Juliana to see if they could work together to find out the truth behind the building collapse. She didn't trust him at first and was reluctant to share any of her information. When she kept getting attacked, he talked her into moving in with him for her protection. Juliana was pretty sure she knew who was responsible - Michael Delancey, the contractor. She just needed to connect all the pieces. John wasn't sure if Delancey was the true culprit, but he wanted the truth, no matter what it was. As they got more and more information, it looked like there was a lot more behind it. There was also the matter of the intense attraction they felt for each other. Juliana was finally beginning to fully trust Dawson when she found out his full name ... and then had to decide where to go from there. I liked Juliana and the way her mind worked. She did a fantastic job of researching backgrounds and following leads, finding connections that even he didn't know about. I really enjoyed the conclusion, especially when Dawson came to see Juliana at her dad's house.
Juliana's father was killed when a casino collapsed on top of him, and she wants evidence against the man she holds responsible - building contractor Michael Delancey. The police called it an unfortunate accident. So when private investigator John Dawson shows up at her door claiming to want the truth about the accident, she's relieved to have someone experienced helping her obtain information that might lead to a conviction. What Dawson hasn't told her is that he's actually John Dawson Delancey - and he's not convinced that his father is actually to blame...
I've read a few books in the Delancey Dynasty series, without even knowing they're connected. They've been entertaining enough reads, though not memorable for me. This one followed that pattern - while I enjoyed it for the most part, I doubt I'll remember it in a week or two.
Dawson was appealing, though not complex enough to grab at my heart. Juliana, I really empathised with, as her pain over her father's death was palpable, but she did drive me crazy at times - she was incredibly impulsive and seemed to basically lack common sense, and got herself into situations where she required rescuing not once but THREE times. Her talk of wanting to be a P.I. didn't really fit with that kind of impulsivity and lack of mindfulness, and I can't help but feel that it was just thrown into the book to provide a reason for her to agree to work with Dawson. Sloppy writing like that, where a character does something out of character for no other reason than advancing the plot, always irks me.
I've read quite a few Mallory Kane books, and they're always readable, but this isn't her best work. 3 stars.
Not bad. I hate the proposals at the end of some of these books, but this one was at least unique. The mystery was decent, and overall I liked the characters. There was some hokiness, but that's to be expected.
In Kane’s romantic suspense novel, security specialist John Dawson teams with Juliana Caprese to investigate the collapse of a building that killed her father. As their investigation digs deeper into the suspects, the duo finds themselves dodging bullets. Clearly, they were moving in the right direction but the more they work together, the more personally involved they become making it even harder to consider losing one or the other.
An action packed, fast-paced installment to The Delancey Dynasty.
