With dozens of bestsellers to her name, Lisa Jackson is a master of taking readers to the edge of sanity—and back—in novels that buzz with dangerous secrets and deadly passions. She continues to be fascinated by the minds and motives of both her killers and their pursuers—the personal, the professional, and the downright twisted. As she builds the puzzle of relationships, actions, clues, lies, and personal histories that haunt her protagonists, she must also confront the fear and terror faced by her victims and the harsh and enduring truth that, in the real world, terror and madness touch far too many lives and families.
This review may contain SPOILERS! I'll talk a little about both stories that were included in this book, because both were good. I thought that the first story was definitely stronger than the second one, also due to the fact that the first one had this thriller-element included were we didn't know who the killer was until the end. Therefore, I would give the first story four stars if it were the only one in this book. The second story was a little boring from time to time since it seemed like all they were doing was arguing over things that could have been resolved in a minute if both were willing to trust and listen to each other. That said the story wasn't so bad but I would give it three stars if it stood by itself. Since the first story was about the sister from the second story we already were introduced to namely all important side characters for the second story in the first, which was nice. I really appreciated all of the characters but it wasn't like I was super-happy for them either, I just liked them is all. This was a nice little novel for in-between, but the stories weren't majorly mind-blowing so therefore this rating, still good though. 3,5/5 stars
Two stories 1 book. #1 He's a Bad Boy. Jackson Moore was the bad boy of the town. One night after Roy, the spoiled son of the wealthy founder of the town hit him on his motorcycle on purpose and Roy ended up dead that night. Jackson was arrested and although not convicted everyone though he killed Roy. Only one person stood up for Jackson, Rachelle Tremont. She said she had been with him all night. Jackson left town, went to school, became a famous criminal defense attorney. When he heard Rachelle was going back to Gold Creek, He took off to Gold Creek to clear up the past and find whoever had killed Roy and clear his name. Also, to make up for leaving Rachelle to face the town alone. Story #2 He's Just a Cowboy. Heather Tremont is working on the Lazy K ranch when she meets Turner Brooks, a rodeo cowboy. He took her innocence and broke her heart. She married another when she could find Turner, but it didn't work out as she didn't love him and the child she bore was Turner's. Now the child was sick and she needed Turner as he might be a match for her son. She returns to Gold Creek to see if she can find him, and tell him about his son. Both are good reads.
I have to say that now more than ever I want to read the stories from the towns other characters. Ms Jackson took her time to build not only the characters but the complexity of the mystery behind the murder of Roy. I felt for each of the characters and their parts in actions that lead to the tragedy. I didn’t give it 5 star because I feel like I didn’t get complete closure for each of the characters but perhaps that will be in another book.
Ugh I feel I’ve read so many books with similar feels. I’m so tired of the tired theme “bad boy hore” treats women horribly but as soon as he meets “her” he can’t think of anyone else and even though it’s nothing but obsessive lust he’s now a one lady man forever . The first book was interesting enough but the second was too much. I hated both the characters . I just wish the woman lead would have more self respect
"He's a Bad Boy" was a pretty good story. I didn't care for the toxic relationship in "He's Just a Cowboy." I think some had to do with the narrator in the audiobook, but the story itself was unbelievable that there would be a happy ending.
Two books about sisters. In the first one He's a Bad Boy is the story of Rachelle. It starts 12 years in the past and shows how she first got involved with Jackson Moore, the town bad boy. After Jackson stops the son of the main family in town, Roy Fitzgerald who Jackson already has a beef with, from raping Rachelle at a party, they leave the party together. Roy's friends are after them and they hide in an empty house near by. Rachelle is a virgin and that night she makes love with Jackson multiple times. In the morning the sheriff is knocking on the door and arrests Jackson. Rachelle thinks it is because they broke in the house where they are hiding, but he is arrested for murdering Roy Fitzgerald. Rochelle is his alibi and it ruins her reputation. She is 17 and still hasn't finished high school. Jackson leaves town and Rachelle is humiliated her last year in high school. The story jumps ahead 12 years and Rachelle is now a journalist and Jackson is a famous New York attorney. Rachelle writes a story that Jackson reads about returning to her home town. He decides to go back and try to find out what really happened regarding the murder. Even though he was found innocent, everyone in town still things that he did it. Jackson and Rachelle get back together and have their happy ending. The killer and a few other things are revealed in the last chapter.
In the second book, sister Heather is trying to find Turner, the father of her some Adam who has leukemia. The story goes back 6 years to show how Heather and Turner met and how she became pregnant. It then goes forward until Heather needs to get in touch to see if Turner is a bone marrow match for their son. Turner is a match and the doctor tells them that he was a little surprised since usually a sibling is the best chance of a match. Turner and Heather do get together, but want to wait to get married until after Jackson and Rachelle do so they don't interfere with the plans they have made. About a week before Rachelle's wedding Heather finds out she is pregnant, but in the nosy small town someone had seen her buy a pregnancy test and the story that she is pregnant soon is spread across the town. When Turner finds out a few hours after Heather has the test he explodes and says the only reason she got together with him was so he could be a stud to provide a sibling for Adam for a bone marrow transplant. Heather says she just found out for sure herself and why would she need a sibling when Turner is already a match. They separate, but do get together after Turner realizes that Heather really does love him an vice versa.
I give the first story 4 stars and the second 3 stars, so it averages to 3.5 stars. It seemed like the reasons for the hero and heroine to be apart made more sense in the first story. I also liked the mystery aspect regarding who killed Roy

Secrets and Lies contains two of Lisa Jackson's earlier romances. They are books 1 and 2 of a 4 part series. After reading these,I have definitely begun haunting my library for the last two. Each story is split into two parts, then and now. I liked the format because I didn't have to be told he back story is multiple flashbacks. That made it more entertaining for me.
The first book is He's a Bad Boy. Jacskon Moore and Rachelle Tremont ended up sharing a night of passion the same night as the towns golden child is murdered. Rachelle is ostracized by the town when she supplies an alibi for Jackson when he is accused of murder. Now they have both come back to their home town seeking answers to what happened that night so long ago. The love story in this one was very sweet. I love lost love stories. I was rooting for their HEA. The murderer was pretty easy to pick out, but it didn't ruin the story for me.
He's Just a Cowboy was also pretty good. I didn't like it was much as the first, though. A few things bothered me. Turner Brooks was a playboy who took Heather's innocence one steamy summer. He leaves and she discovers she is pregnant with his child. 6 years later, her son is sick and she needs his help. While I liked the characters and their love story, I was bothered by the lack of birth control use in this story. I thought Turner's reaction to Heather getting pregnant again after they hooked up was a bit harsh. You would think that 6 years later, they would both understand the birds and the bees. At any rate, it was still an enjoyable read.
Yet another audio book for the car that I was definitely not impressed with. The first book of the two earns 4 stars for me as it was fairly good with some mystery tied in. The second book on the other hand...oh boy....what a mess! The female lead was a teenager infatuated with a rough and tumble cowboy who was a complete and utter self centered jerk!! Hes completely rude and condescending to her through the whole story and blames her for everything when he is the one who left her high and dry to join the rodeo. Of course it fast forwards to several years later and they must cross paths again for more emotional abuse and condescending male attitude. Very hard to cheer on these lovers for their happily ever after when the male lead is a jerk. the basic concept of both stories was the same and could have easily been left to focus on the couple from the first book and tied in a side story of the second. They definitely didn't deserve their own book. I love Lisa Jackson but this book really let me down.
