Cornelis (Kees) van Dijk (1946) is emeritus professor of the history of modern Islam in Indonesia at Leiden University and head of the former Documentation Modern Indonesia (DMI) department of the Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies (KITLV).

bersih [dan kotor sebagai lawannya] adalah kategori yang bisa politis.
orang bisa menyingkirkan orang lain lewat penerapan kategori ini.
bangunan dan sarana permukiman juga bisa disingkirkan lewat kategori ini.
pembangunan sarana mandi umum, juga pelarangannya pun berkaitan dengan kategori ini.
demikian pula kategori-kategori tadi bisa membawa perubahan pada tata letak rumah di permukiman, maupun tata letak perabot di dalam rumah itu sendiri.

ini adalah kumpulan tulisan mengenai hal-hal tadi dengan mengambil setting pada masa kolonialisasi di indonesia. masa yang kaya raya untuk penelitian mengenai beroperasinya kekuasaan lewat higiene dan kategori sehat-sakit, bersih-kotor tadi...
