Rated 3.5 stars. This book was a fun read for me. The characters were engaging and the action nonstop. This is the second installment in Colby Agency Texas and the 49th book in Webb’s Colby Agency series. High Noon is the name of the saloon the protectee, Laney Seagers, owns. She is a single mom and business owner and on the verge of losing everything. Why? Because her ex is trying to take everything including their son. He has gotten his extremely wealthy father to call in the loan that she has been paying off. On top of everything else in her life she now finds out that she is the daughter of the most notorious serial killers in the state of Texas and that she was adopted when she was four. She also has two sisters she has never known. Things start looking up for Laney when she hired a new bouncer, Joel Hayden. Hayden is an investigator for the Houston branch of the Colby Agency. He has been assigned to Laney for protection. He falls head over heels for her and her genius of a five year old. Why do they need Hayden’s protection? Because Laney’s mother has won her appeal and is out of prison. She is searching for her children and won’t stop until she finds them all. But why does she want to find them? Reunion? Kill them? Nobody knows for sure
Very good book. The hunt for Clare Barker is heating up, and Laney is the next one in danger. Laney owns the High Noon bar where she makes a good living and is raising her son. His father is trying to make trouble for Laney. Joel has been assigned by the Colby Agency to keep Laney and her son safe. When he steps in to protect her, he gets hired on as the new bouncer at the bar, and hopes to use that to stay undercover. But when Clare gets too close, Joel has to come clean with Laney. I really liked the way Laney was independent, but saw the sense of accepting help when their safety was threatened. She was stunned by Joel's revelations, and couldn't think what it would mean for their future. Joel couldn't believe how quickly Laney and Buddy had become a part of his life, and that he didn't want to let them go. I loved the way he related so well to Buddy, and how easily he was able to support Laney and her dreams. I'm really looking forward to the next book and seeing how the situation is resolved.
The background on this story was hard to take. Three woman's mother and father were in prison for killing several girls. Supposedly the father sent them away so the mother could not kill them. That was 25 years ago. They were all adopted and do not know anything about their natural parents. The mother just got out of prison and the only thing between them and death is body guards from the Colby agency. Joel Hayden gets a job at Laney Seavers bar. He is protecting her from her ex as a bouncer at the bar. But he has to tell her the truth about her parents when strange things happen at her house. Together they try to protect her five year old son and stay alive at the same time. This story was continuously developing as it went along. I cannot wait to read about the other two sisters.
Story moved right along from beginning to end. It was exciting and kept by interest, but I was disappointed when I realized that the story was not going to end there. Worth reading, but be sure to have all of the books to the conclusion.
Leaving Jim and Ian to run the Chicago office, Victoria and Lucas announce their retirement and move to Texas to help Simon start up the Texas office.
They are immediately imbroiled in plots against three sisters, each of which believing she is an only child. This of course evolves into three books, culminating in July with with book fifty of the series.
In Colby Law (release 8 May) and High noon (release 12 June) The youngest and middle daughter have no memory or knowledge of being adopted at the ages of two and four. The middle daughter does have nightmares that are rooted in that time.
As usual for Ms Webb, these young ladies end of "permanantly" protected by Colby agents as the protectees fall in lovd with their protectors. Colby loses/gains more investigators this way.
The third book, Colby Roundup (TBR 2 July) will bring th eldest daughter into the picture. I can hadly wait.
In Webb’s romantic suspense novel, Colby agent Joel Hayden has been assigned to one of Texas’s most heinous serial killer cases. The killer is still on the loose and he’s determined to protect single mom Laney Seagers. Snagging a job at Laney’s High Noon bar is necessary for him to get close enough to protect mother and son. As danger escalates, Joel struggles to keep the small family safe and still protect them from family secrets they know nothing about. As Laney’s life becomes a balancing act of keeping her son safe, fighting off his estranged father’s advances, fighting to keep her home and business up and running Joel is forced to do some soul searching. As a lifelong bachelor, he faces some on-the-job training that educates him in matters of the heart.
The Colby Agency TX is one of the most exciting series Debra Webb has produced.
Good book. Part 2 of a trilogy about the Colby Agency. I received the first book in the trilogy from Net Galley. (This was a very good marketing plan.) I was left with the need to find out what happens next so I purchased this book and the final book in the trilogy, Colby Roundup.
Each book is about different agent protecting a different young woman from the same killer. The romance suspense in each book is finalized within the book. The catching of the killer is continued into the next book of the series.
One of the Colby Agency stories, this one focuses on barkeep Laney (unaware she's the daughter of a criminal in jail and his wife, who is now out and looking for her) and Joel Hayden, a Colby agent sent to protect her while trying to catch the bad people.
When Laney's young son is taken, the tension spirals to a conclusion that felt somehow unfinished when it was clear the bad guys had slipped away and are still on the loose, possibly looking to find Laney's other sisters? I see a sequel in the works here.
