It took me a while to warm up to this play, but in the last movement, I really started to like it. Asher’s conflict with his parents is so real, and that ending HURT. “Go in health and return in health.” Wow. I can see why my drama teacher sometimes calls this “the best play ever written.”
The book I read is not listed here. It has this title but is written by Chaim Potok. This is a marvelous work about the coming of age of a young artist. Potok captures both the struggles of youth and the strict discipline required by the Hasidic culture. 5 stars from me!
An interesting but my entirely successful adaptation of Chaim Potok's 1972 novel of the same name. The concept is something like Ira Glass / This American Life storytelling; cool, but leaves the ending a bit flat.
