The ‘period’ title hides a series of syntactically gorgeous sentences, connected like echt New Sentences but with pleasurable frisson, not jerky detournment, as their primary mode of affect. Masterful and undeniably beautiful, though maybe finally a little empty, these pieces stand as a tuneful reminder that the Language moment, for all its theoretical heavy lifting, also spawned a ‘90s aestheticism all its own.
