Taking Down Mistletoe

Rate this book
Parties everywhere, but Alek—security and all-around handy guy—is stuck at work in the department store taking down the holiday decorations. Just when he thinks he’ll escape in time for a little celebrating, fate takes a deadly turn. A thirsty leech doesn’t mind going down, as long as Alek joins him.

Tired of sucking on candy canes, Loki is sick of the tall security guard ignoring him. He’s determined, one way or another, that Alek will find himself lying flat. Unfortunately, a man dressed in black enters the scene and interrupts him.

When the parasite-exterminator, in the form of a dark, handsome hunk, arrives and latches onto Alex, things go from weird to downright bizarre. Did Alek really find love under the mistletoe, or has something beyond sinister taken hold of him?

This story definitely falls into the category 'weird but intriguing' for me. It took me a while to figure out what was going on, but I ended up liking the additional point of view, as well as the humorous interruptions from Loki.

Alek is a pretty straightforward guy, or so he thinks. He isn't quite sure how to deal with all the sudden weirdnness - and I was totally with him. The 'leech' that attaches itself to ALek has a life of its own, and that puts the story firmly in 'paranormal land', but also adds an element of mystery to the story.

Van remains a bit of a mystery, but he is the one who ensures Alek's safety - in more than one regard. Interestingly, at the very end there is a bit of a reversal of roles, and I really liked that.

If you like 'indefinable' stories, some mystery and paranormal elements, if a little bit of chaos doesn't bother you and if you're open to a somewhat experimental read, this story may be what you're looking for.

What a fun story. We start off in the point of view of a parasite and all our conventions about this 'love plant' are turned on their heads. You kiss under these hanging balls at your peril. Ms Webb has written a story that's fun, frightening, sexy and clever. She has a talent for seeing the weird in everyday situations and like her great story - Rebel - plants play a large part. Or one plant in particular. Mistletoe.
I love the interactions between the characters and particularly the humor. There were several laugh-out-loud moments. For me, the story raced along and I couldn't wait to see what was going to happen.

A bit creepy at first, a vampiric mistletoe attached itself to Alek when he takes it down. Van, a parasite-exterminator, comes to his rescue and rids him of the mistletoe that was going to drain Alek to death and a creepy co-worker stalker, Loki. After Alek is freed, he is determined to keep Van and plans to seduce him to his way of thinking.
