News anchor, Kate Theodore was a woman in control of her domain – the newsroom and her show, Around the World with Kate Theodore. She hired and fired. She brought the news – the good, bad and ugly, in an honest and brutal fashion. Nothing escaped her piercing eyes and mind. She fought her way to the top despite being the daughter of media superstar, Carolyn Chase. Kate deserved every award and acknowledgement she’d earned through personal blood, sweat and determination.
In an event which changed the course of a nation, Kate’s tight grip on her reign began to loosen. The devastating effects of 911 not only tore at the souls of those involved, it gripped the world in its terror. For Kate, it meant the loss of a man she loved and the inability to remain alone in a world of fear. It also meant new changes to the only life she knew. Her reign as sole news anchor would come to an end as the news station traverses through a takeover. As Kate begins to piece together her new world, she latches on to men who are unable to give her what she needs to fill the emptiness in her heart and soul.
Enter Tabitha, Kate’s best friend and college roommate. The two haven’t seen each other in years and now Kate has been asked to be her maid of honor. It is clear there are more than a few unresolved issues between the two old friends. As Kate tries to figure out where her life is going, her estranged father calls from England. He has been diagnosed with a melanoma and wants her to visit. Her stress level at an all time high as Kate fights for her career and the meaning of her life.
Author, Liz Newman produces a tragic romance in a post 911 setting. Her characters combine impeccably and the reader will easily get lost in the underlying adversities which surround them. An Affinity for Shadows is a story of love wrapped beneath layers of torrent and ruin. It is what real life entails and is a novel which reclaims the glimmer of hope within.
Lee-Ann Graff-Vinson is the author of ‘Georgia’s Smile’, ‘Love’s Trust’, ‘Callie’s Fate’, ‘Love And Liberty’ (now also available in print), and her most recent release ‘Queen Emily’s Enchanted Kingdom – Sugarland’, a children’s picture book series available in kindle and print versions.

Review:

"An Affinity for Shadows" by Liz R. Newman was a good compelling well written romance read. This author takes the reader on a journey that will keep in turning the pages until the end. The plot was very absorbing that turned out to be a very captivating read.

"An Affinity for Shadows" is of Kate Theodore, who was a very talented broadcast journalist from the New York ... who was smart and on top of her game, however with all that was going on in her life... would she be able to make it in the TV world of news? Kate is a very strong character....for she witnessed and reported live at the Twin Towers on 9/11...and it was their that her cameraman(Gibbs) died..witnessing the devastation...then there is a change with her work assignment...bringing her to wonder what is really important in her life....coming up short in love of a good man....and family....then there is Kate's medical condition... and then there is her best friend Tabitha...who is one that is really into herself...very much a party girl....then we have Sal( Marques Sal Oliveri) and oh what a handsome Italian... Kate meets and even takes a vacation to Italy. ...certainly things will bring a change for Kate...and let's not forget that Charlie... Now this is the part where I say you will have to pick up this read and find out just what and how all of this is going on on in this good read.

I found "An Affinity for Shadows" was sometimes funny, intriguing, especially between the two friends... Kate and Tabitha. You will find a world of glamour and lots of riches...with many of the characters and I would recommend "An Affinity for Shadows" as a exceptinal good read.

"A COMPELLING, EMOTIONAL STORY OF TRAGEDY, LOSS, AND LOVE!"

A talented, focused Broadcast journalist is known for her unique, mesmerizing reporting style, after she climbs the ladder of success. The well-known News anchor, Kate Theodore, is not only professional, but a pro on her job description. She is strong, filled with courage, passionate and determined to be the best, regardless of the consequences. Liz R. Newman takes the reader on a riveting journey through the eyes of the main character that tugs at the heart from beginning to end. A touching journey through the life of one woman, made for the movie screen! I highly recommend this book to all romance lovers, who enjoy electrifying stories that are blended with drama, suspense, and humor. The reader is taken from the streets of New York City and Central Park as we can hear the clomping of horses' hooves from the creaky wheels of carriages, before we witness the devastation of September 11, 2001, to the magnificent villas in Italy. Did the bombings of the twin towers change Kate's life? What happened to Gibbs, and was romance in the air for Kate and Sal? This thought-provoking, incredible story, will bring tears to your eyes through loss, and make you smile through triumph. Enter an unforgettable journey from the glitter and gloom of New York to the fragrance of gardenia, expresso, and fine cuisine in Italy. Will Kate step out of the dark shadows of heartbreak and see the bright light at the end of the tunnel? "AN AFFINITY for SHADOWS" is as entertaining as WORLD TRADE CENTER, as delightful as IT STARTED IN NAPLES, and as romantic as ONLY YOU, with Marisa Tomei.

Kate is a news anchor on one of the biggest networks on TV. She fought her way to the top some say on the coat tails of her famous mother, also a journalist. But, Kate has had her share of heartbreak, hard knocks and career mistakes she wishes she could forget. She is a workaholic working long hours and never taking a vacation, hooks up with guys who really don't interest her and is generally unhappy. In the middle of all this, 9/11 strikes and she's right at the center of it, but she loses someone she loves and it seems to take the fight out of her. When a health concern puts her in the hospital she has to reevaluate her life and she chooses a villa in Italy to do just that. She meets a man she wishes for but he is unavailable, or is he?

This book is a compelling read. Although it is a romance at its core, the ensemble characters make this a I-can't-put-this-book down type of book, you, as the reader want to know what's going to happen next? The journalist/TV news parts seem very real, it's easy to visualize the TV network the main character works for. Enter a world of celebrities, glamour and riches that few of us ever live in. Pick up this book but be prepared to devour it in only a couple of sittings.

I don't often read romances - but then, for me, they are not usually as compelling as this one. The main character, Kate, is authentic because she is no stereotypical heroine. She is independent, feisty and determined. I also became absorbed in the settings. The plot was strong and absorbing and it was a real pleasure to read. This is a 'curl up and enjoy' book and I would definitely recommend it.

The first chapter had me a bit confused. After that, I appreciated the protagonist more and found myself hooked.

This reviewer received a pre-pub manuscript of An Affinity For Shadows for review. This reviewer found the manuscript in need of some editing.

An Affinity For Shadows is the story of two friends, Kate and Tabitha from different backgrounds who were roommates in college that became friends despite their backgrounds.

Kate became a Television journalist while Tabitha went her own way after college. Kate, centered on her career lost touch with Tabitha after sharing an apartment with her. Kate was serious about her career while Tabitha was more of a party girl.

The 9/11 attack happened while Kate was working on her on air show. She and her friend Gibbs went to tape a spot for her show. Gibbs had a heart attack and passed on the spot while holding the camera on his shoulder. Later she meets an enigmatic man, Sal (who is the Marques Sal Oliveri), who is unknown to Kate and thinks little of him at the time.

Because of Gibbs death and Deenie who was sleeping with the boss, Kate was having a hard time dealing with life in general, and love in particular. Kate wondered if she was even capable of loving after being asked to be the Maid of Honor at Tabitha’s wedding even though they haven’t seen each other in over four years.

Because of a rare medical condition and a man in Kate’s life, things didn’t go very well for either Kate or Tabitha. The Tabloids caught Kate in disarray slipping on ice and snow as she ran out of the Church during the ceremony.

Now was the beginning of Kate’s PTSD and her questioning her life, and if the love of a good man would ever be a part of it.

Kate works on a new show while she also takes a vacation in Italy until Tabitha shows up in need of her friend Kate. Here she meets Sal again and things change for Kate in ways she could never have dreamed of.

What transpires next is only for those that read the book. It is engrossing, funny, and tragic with some interesting exchanges between Kate and Tabitha, especially while they are both in Italy.

This reviewer can only award three out of five stars for this manuscript, but with judicious editing, would award a solid four and a half stars out of five to An Affinity For Shadows by Liz R. Newman.
