On March 9, 2009, Joe Liles set out from Springer Mountain, GA, to hike the north bound route of the Appalachian Trail. The culmination of a life long dream, his trek took him over 2178 miles, 14 states, and 6 months til he reached his final goal of Mt. Katahdin in Maine. Along the way, Joe sent in regular Trail Reports and pictures of his progress and adventures. The story of his journey is contained in the pages of this book.
I admit I am not objective: Joe Liles is a former and beloved teacher of mine. There is no question that reading about a personal journey like this one is even more interesting when you know the person making the journey, even if you knew them a long time ago. In writing as in person, however, Joe makes it pretty easy for you to get to know him. His humanity, and his appreciation for the Trail, for local history and culture, for native peoples, and for the people and creatures he meets along the way shine through this account. He also gives some attention to the spiritual movements occurring in himself along the way. He is a professional artist and photographer, and his photos and the book layout and design are very pleasing, as well.
