As a physician who has cared for and counseled innumerable patients, Bernie S. Siegel embraces a philosophy that is at the forefront of a society grappling with medical ethics and spiritual issues. His books Love, Medicine, and Miracles (1986), Peace, Love and Healing (1989), and How to Live Between Office Visits (1993) have broken new ground in the field of healing. Over a span of twenty years, other physicians have become increasingly receptive to his message. Bernie's efforts have now turned toward humanizing medical care and medical education, and he continues to travel extensively with his wife, Bobbie, to speak at and run workshops, sharing his techniques and experiences. Bernie and Bobbie have five children and six grandchildren (so far). "This book is a continuation of the work I began when I became Bernie. It is a collection of stories about how to deal with life's difficulties. Most of the people in these stories have not had the great wake-up call; that is, they are mot facing life-threatening illnesses. So in a sense, this book is preventive medicine. It is a prescription for living that gives you effective and healthy ways of dealing with the adversity that occurs in everyone's life. I want to help you learn to accept your morality before something catastrophic brings you face-to-face with the end of your life." -- From the Introduction
Bernie Siegel is an American writer and retired pediatric surgeon, who writes on the relationship between the patient and the healing process. He is known for his best-selling book Love, Medicine and Miracles.
My background with learning about Bernie Siegel is a VHS tape that I really loved to watch called Miracles are Real by Questar Video. Then I also attended one or two of Bernies group talks and got to meet him and his son who also gave me a free copy of this book Prescriptions for Living because it was a slightly damaged copy. I now have gotten around to reading it even though that was a few years ago when I got it. I recommend reading this book because there are some powerful pieces of advice in the book. for example when he writes about getting rid of what is killing you rather than resorting to killing yourself. he also writes about deciding who you are and how it's easier to be one person than to play all these different roles in life. I like to read a lot and I don't always agree with the religious views of everything I read over the years but I don't believe it should prevent me from reading a different point of view. If someone is a bible believer then they are not going to agree with all the new age views out there but then again there is a lot of overlap too. It makes you feel stronger to know and understand more.
Inspirational lessons for a joyful, loving life by this noted heart doctor.

Culturally it needs updating…but if read with an open heart it delivers! Dr. Siegel’s kindness and humor goes a long way in making this message true for most people!
I like all of Bernie's books for the same reasons. Dr. Bernie Siegel is a practicing MD who realizes that healing is so much more than an application of remedies and treatments issued by a medical professional. With a great deal of wit and humbleness he discusses some of the remarkable events that he has witnessed and he shares his thoughts on how crucial the role of beliefs are in healing the physical body.
To Quote Anne Landers when she reviewed “Prescriptions for Living”, "Run, don't walk, to the nearest bookstore and get this amazing book that explains how you can 'think' yourself sick or well...Every family should have a copy. It can be a Lifesaver.”--- Anne Landers
