A prose retelling of the 13th-century epic poem that follows the fluctuating fortunes of Gudrun, daughter of a king, who spends many years as the hostage of the evil Queen of Normandy.
I thought I had read every version of Gudrun’s story during my graduate level project on the Saga of the Volsungs, but this one was entirely new to me.
Based on a 13th-century Middle High German epic, this Gudrun’s story was entirely different from the Gudrun (or Kriemhild) attached to the legend of the Volsungs. After reading this retelling, I’d be curious to track down the original text for comparison.
