Jacques-Pierre Amette (born 1943 in Saint-Pierre-sur-Dives, Calvados) is a French writer. In 2003 his novel Brecht's Mistress (French: La Maîtresse de Brecht) won the Prix Goncourt. He has been a correspondent for The New York Times and a journalist for several French newspapers.

Tháng 8/2020: đọc lại lần 2 sau 8 năm: sao mình không nhớ là cuốn này nó buồn dữ vậy ta? Một nỗi buồn rệu rã, tang hoang, đổ nát trong một xã hội bị cấm đoán quá nhiều với lối viết chân thật, trần trụi nhưng cũng quá đỗi rung động mà chắc mình sẽ nhớ mãi Maria có "trái tim nồng nhiệt, trong sáng".

This novel is set in post-war east Berlin. It starts out with a real event: In 1948 Bertold Brecht follows the more than generous offers of the about to be formed communist state, returning from exile. He is offered absolute literary freedom (he can even receive newspapers from all over the world, unimaginable for the ordinary eastern German of that time), a well funded theater to shape according to his ideas and loads of money. In turn he is expected to become a eastern Germany's showcase artist.

Here Amette's protagonist, the fictional (but realistic) Maria Eich enters the stage. She is an Austrian actress with Nazi connections who is induced or rather blackmailed by the infant eastern German spy service, to become Brecht's mistress and spy on the playwright who's loyalty is doubted by the system.

In due course she enters his inner circle, spies on him and although she doesn't fall in love with him, she respects him greatly. Her spymaster, who - as an unnecessary sub-plot also falls in love with her - allows her to leave for western Germany when Brecht's the spy-service's interest shifts and her life is endangered. She later becomes a rather stern German-teacher in Pforzheim.

Considering the fact that this novel won the Prix Goncourt, France's most important literature price, this work has surprisingly few readers on Goodreads. Furthermore, reviews outside of France were rather negative. German reviews were focusing on alleged corruption in the Goncourt committee and showering the Author with false praise ("he managed to spell almost all German Names correctly"). English language reviews were complaining that this work is too distanced and cold.

I don't agree at all. I think this novel is certainly worthwhile for those interested in Brecht's later years. The author creates the typical gloomy east Berlin spy novel atmosphere, known from proper spy novels. But at the same time he creates fascinating dialogues in with Brecht and around him, very cleverly entering hidden allusions on Brecht lines from Poems and plays. The description of Buckow and the creation of the Buckow elegies is especially striking.

What many critics may not have likes, iss that he depicts Brecht as the egocentric prick, he was. Sucking ideas and life blood from all people around him. However, if you read his journals or the great depiction of his Swedish years in Peter Weiß' "Aesthetic of Resistance" you will find the same brilliant but not very likable Brecht.

For all those who - like me - don't read French all that often: Amette's French is elegent yet not too difficult. The main difficulty is guessing the hidden Brecht quotes, if you never read Brecht in French.

Bằng kiểu viết thờ ơ, buông xuôi, đôi khi cảm giác vô nghĩa, Amette đã giam cầm tôi trong thành phố Berlin thời hậu thế chiến II suốt hai năm nay. Phải, mua "Người tình của Brecht" ở Đà Lạt năm 2016, đọc bốn cuốn "Người tình của Brecht" khác nhau, ở những thành phố khác nhau và tới giờ mới kết thúc cũng ở Đà Lạt dù nó là sách khổ nhỏ và chưa tới 300 trang.

Ít có cuốn sách nào trùm cả không gian ảo của nó lên tôi như vậy (có thể kể thêm là Lolita và Bệnh nhân người Anh). Vào những chiều muộn ngồi ngoài sân ở thư viện, nhìn Đà Lạt đang chết dần, tôi cảm giác mình rất gần Brecht. Đôi khi lại như Maria là một quá khứ của mình, bởi mọi thứ vừa mờ ảo, lại vừa rõ ràng, và có quá nhiều cảm xúc khi đọc "Người tình của Brecht".

Tác giả Amette sinh năm 1943, tức ông chỉ o e tập nói vào thời điểm diễn ra trong cuốn sách. Thật kinh ngạc bởi ông nhận định lịch sử như thể nó là cú đòn chết người dành cho ông ở tuổi trung niên. Và cái cách ông dựng lại Brecht, một cách hư cấu, mới đáng sợ làm sao (Nghĩ lại cuốn Alabama Song mới thảm hại làm sao). Đúng là chỉ crazy fan mới làm được vậy. Chả thế mà giải Goncourt năm ấy bất chấp điều tiếng, vội giật lấy "Người tình của Brecht".

Trong cơn mê muội sau khi kết thúc cuốn sách, định đánh quả 5 sao mà thôi. Quả là thế.

Very efficiently written and pleasant to read. The author included many historical details, people, places, so-called realities, but all this is not intrusive, it is carefully hidden behind the scenes. The author's great merit is that, despite the care taken to present the era, it is not the case, as in books of a lower technical (artistic) level, that the characters accidentally participate in all historical events. On the contrary, both Brecht, his lover, his wife, and all other key people avoid important places and events. The author is probably very proud of this (and rightly so) and did not hesitate to boast about it - at the very beginning there is an allusive scene when Brecht plays a joke on his companions and, together with his entourage, ends up not where his companions are waiting for him with flowers and speeches. The plot, the intrigue, the people - everything is very good. In two places I found minor mistakes with the realities of the GDR - the author provided a detail from later years, when Brecht was no longer in the world. But I won't tell you where, everyone should look for it themselves (it's quite easy to find it if you have some knowledge about life in Comecon countries). By the way, I wonder if these are really mistakes (with such great workshop? - impossible!), or maybe the author and the reader should play searching and catching... If so, it is even more worth reading this book.

Khắc hoạ những số phận ở thời gian chuyển giao thể chế. Những số phận nghiệt ngã theo cách riêng của họ.

I was drawn to this book by the limited knowledge that I already had of its subject matter, have had an interest in both Brecht and life in post-war eastern Europe for some time. Though the story itself is a fiction it is grounded sufficiently in truth and the reality of the time that it is able to paint an extremely vivid picture of the times. In fact it brings out a vision of 1948 to 1954 that is not usually reflected in other stories or films about post-war Berlin, the complete uncertainty of the immediate post-partition city, while they still talk of zones and not east and west and there is not yet a wall physically and symbolically dividing the two ideologies. What is interesting is that by adopting a Marxist philosophy those in East Berlin seem to be coming to terms with defeat and the shame of nazism quicker than those in the west who have to hide behind Britain and America who provide both their redemption and a constant reminder of their defeat.

As the title suggests the novel isn't so much about Brecht as about his lover, or more accurately lovers, by which I don't just mean physical, sexual lovers but the wider public and state who hold Brecht in such esteem both for his art and his propaganda value as well as the more metaphysical loves of art, culture and marxist ideology. This means that the novel is as much about a divided Germany coming to terms with its place in this new world as it is about Maria Eich or any of the other characters. What seems to come across very strongly is that ultimately Germans are Germans, regardless of which zone they live in. Both sides are united in their hatred of the Nazis and which they did to Germany and many of the characters look back to a time before the first world war when Germany was first united. When one character bemoans the lack of politeness shown by the soldiers in the Russian zone and looks with nostalgia back to the old Prussia his companion points out that even then there were impolite soldiers. Nothing changes and it matters not who runs the country or whether you lean to the left or the right, at the end of the night people are people just trying to get by. As Maria's motivations are revealed we realise that human emotions, love, guilt, shame, hope and the ever present ambition will always triumph over political belief.

Overall this is a highly lyrical novel about a time of uncertainty and possibility, a time when even a genius like Brecht was struggling to find his way.

Ostensibly fiction, Amette's novel reads like he's done quite a bit of research, both on Brecht and his life and on the east German secret police. It's a kind of forensic romance between a young actress, the much older play writer, and the secret police handler for whom she's spying on him.

The novel's strength is its perfect capture of the bureaucratic paranoia of post-war East Germany and their suspicion of anything "artistic" and the delicacy of the fleeting emotional states of all the principal characters. Post-war Berlin is also a character and its texture invades and informs all the other characters, despite their resistance to it in the form of past and childhood memories.

It's a novel whose technique has a certain kinship with Brecht's "alienation" effects but whose atmosphere and emotions cling to the reader long after the story has actually finished. - BH.

الرواية ليست بالجيدة و لا بالسيئة ، غير أنها تسلّط الضوء على جانبين مهمين من حياة بريخت ، هما علاقاته الجنسية و خضوعه للمراقبة من قبل السلطات الألمانية ، في هذه الرواية ، يتحوّل بريشت التقدمي إلى إنسان شهواني ، أقرب إلى الممارسة الحيوانية الجنسية ، العالم الروائي غير مترابط و فيه خلل من حيث التنقل بين الحالات التي يعيشها البطل بريشت .

Je sais bien que les prix littéraires sont (d'abord) politiques mais là, quand même... le prix Goncourt du centenaire à La (bien écrite mais avec une agenda si transparente) Maîtresse c'est exagérer. Le (probablement exacte mais manifestement biaisé) roman n'ajoute rien à la literature et ne soustrait rien de la valeur de Brecht

No me gusta ni el fondo ni la forma. El estilo me resulta demasiado cortante, lleno de frases nominales que han perdido el verbo. Mucha descripción, poco sentimiento. Pero es que tampoco me gustó la manera de enfocar el tema. La mayor parte de la trama se desarrolla en Alemania Oriental entre 1948 y 1952, con la vuelta del exilio de un Brecht que aparece retratado como un viejo fauno obsesionado con el sexo. Resulta francamente vomitiva su relación con las mujeres, comenzando por la tácita aprobación de su esposa Helene Weigel a todas sus aventuras. El autor presenta el ambiente opresivo de la sociedad comunista a la que Brecht había idealizado, mostrando su paralelismo con lo que había sido la anterior sociedad nacional-socialista… ambas teatro y escenificación. Y la protagonista, que no puede vivir un amor verdadero en esa sociedad en la que todos vigilan a todos, sólo acabará encontrando la paz al pasarse a la Alemania Occidental, con su casita con jardín y su Opel. No debía de haber muchos candidatos al Goncourt en 2003

Ce qui agace dans ce roman, prix Goncourt, ce sont les inexactitudes, d'autant plus quand on évoque un personnage réel (Brecht) et une situation réelle (les Allemagnes d'après-guerre). Ainsi, comment parler de la RDA en 1948 alors qu'elle n'existait qu'à partir de fin 1949? Et puis, le titre du film auquel Brecht a participé, c'est "Kuhle Wampe" et non pas "Kühle Wampe" - mais un tréma, ça faisait sans doute plus teuton. L'Allemagne d'Amette, c'est "gris", "morne", "plombé", "brumeux" etc. etc., ce qui est historiquement exact, mais ce qui correspond surtout à une fascination toute française pour le Berlin en décombres qui prolonge une vision héritée d'un romantisme morbide du 19e siècle.

Ce qui sauve ce roman, c'est l'attachant personnage central, la (fictive) maîtresse de Brecht, évoquée selon des principes brechtiens, et notamment l'absence de toute psychologie explicite. Cela dit, pour un Goncourt, c'est un peu maigre.

Nước Đức sau thế chiến hai, sự chia cắt của những hệ tư tưởng. Kịch gia Bertolt Brecht phải náu mình ở Đông Đức và bị cuốn vào mối quan hệ với cô đào Maria đồng thời cũng là đặc vụ ngầm của Stasi để hiểu bằng được tâm can chính trị của Brecht. Người tình thứ yếu trong phòng ngủ, minh tinh thất thời nơi sân khấu, nữ điệp viên bị nhiễm hội chứng Stockholm, cùng tình cảm giằng xé từ nhiêu bên càng tô thêm nét tội nghiệp ở giữa hai dòng nước của Maria.

Quyển này gợi nhớ khá nhiều đến Sắc giới của Trương Ái Linh về mặt nội dung nhưng nó có lớp lang và không gây cảm giác bị thiếu nội dung. Khá dễ hiểu để nắm được mạch truyện nhưng "Người tình của Brecht" có kiểu viết tà tà, đôi khi vô sắc vô sự ít tạo cảm hứng. Đọc được chứ không ấn tượng nhiều.

Bertolt Brecht, el famoso dramaturgo alemán, regresa a Alemania después de su exilio durante la época nazi y la II Guerra Mundial. Al llegar a Berlín se encuentra un país (la RDA) paranoico y gris. Maria Eich se convertirá en su amante y lo espiará para la Stasi.

我想生活总存在着各种侧影,混乱混沌的侧影,叫人分不清所向何处,也不知正经历者为何。在这本小说中,我时不时迷失于记录片式的生活琐屑中,我想这样乱尘飞舞的侧影正是历史与生活最常有的面目。

This fictional novel based on biography works through absolutely gorgeous description of time and place. Although at first I wondered if some of its impact was lost in translation, I soon became immersed in the book's world, austere and lavish at the same time.

Captures well the claustrophobic atmosphere of East Germany in the years after Brecht's return and the growth of the Stasi. Much more about Maria Eich, who is set to spy on Brecht, than on the man himself, although it follows the basic outline of his life from return to his death. There are moments of real beauty in the translation and I would imagine that the same holds true for the French edition. Still, it's a case of, "Would I have found it worthwhile without the interest I have in Brecht, simply as a work of literature?" And the answer is probably not.

الفن في مواجهة السياسة، في برلين 1948 الشيوعية ، الإشتراكية ، في مواجهة الثقافة والمسرح.
حين يشي العنوان بكون الرواية تتحدث عن "غراميات " ربما ، هي ليست كذلك حتماً.. ولاهي تتحدث عن برتولد برشت، بل بالأحرى عن العشيقة وحياتها. نقلت الرواية بشكل ممتاز أجواء تلك الحقبة المثيرة . وصورت نفسية العشيقة / الممثلة ماريا ايش بشكل رائع.

Une incursion dans le monde théâtral et culturel de l'Allemagne post-guerre. Intéressant du point de vue historique. Les personnages ne sont cependant pas très développés et difficile de s'y attacher avant la toute fin.

The Literary Times Supplement was accurate in use of the words, elegant and delicate. While the writing is strong, the writer never seems to push to action, something that is not necessary in many cases, but I felt it was warranted in this work. I enjoyed the read and worth the time!
