‘Our kiss is slow, measured, and careful. It’s just about the most perfect kiss I’ve ever shared with someone, under the most imperfect circumstances.’
Wow, this emotional, gut wrenching story belongs in my EPIC pile. This is the type of book that one must read in their lifetime, it simply is sublime and definitely one of my favourites reads of 2023 so far and Jodi at her absolute best.
I would call For You a Love story, not a Romance story. Yes this is a bit different to what Jodi has written in the past, however it has all the great Jem traits that we know and love…it’s just a more complex sort of love story and one with all feels. I would put it on par with The Forbidden, which imo is Jodi’s best story to date….until now.
I don’t really want to give too much away, but Lo is in the depths of despair, in her own private hell. It’s only the appearance of Luke that makes her step outside her sad world and into one that gives her some normality, some hope. But hope soon turns into guilt and we follow Lo in so many levels of emotions, it will be hard for you not to cry whilst reading.
“Having you with me is enough,” she whispers, moving her hold of my wrists to my hands and lacing her fingers through mine. “I just want you to be happy again,” I admit. “To smile with everything you have, nothing tarnishing it.” “That’s never going to happen.”
Luke is just one amazing man from the start, his patience and respect for Lo is endearing and it’s beautiful to see their friendship develop…and that’s what we have between them, one amazing friendship. He is her one constant in such a sh!tty situation. A situation that many thousands have to deal with, day to day.
“You came into her life for a reason. Everything happens for a reason, Grandboy.”
Luke isn’t you’re typical Jem alpha, or any book alpha for that matter, he’s just Luke. A man who happens to come into Lo’s life and gives her that escape she really needs.
I could go on and on about how bloody amazing this book is, but I can’t give too much away. Go into this book with an open mind. Yes it’s gut wrenching and heartbreaking at times. It’s also very thought provoking, it makes you think about lost opportunities in love, it makes you think about hope and new beginnings.
“You’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me.”
For You, a story of Love, hope, and one beautiful friendship.
I went for this book sceptically. It didn’t seem at all like the other Jodi Ellen Malpas books I read and I read them all….big fan of her work.
I often see people commenting they sobbed reading a book and I always thought people exaggerate. They shed tears sure...I've shed many tears reading my books but sobbing? I hardly believe that happens that often. I've never sobbed reading a book. Well, not until this book. Today I can say that, for the first time reading a book, I sobbed uncontrollably. I cried so hard I had to stop reading, I couldn't see anything. My husband discouraged me from continuing the book because he never saw me like this before. I was wrecked. It's such a beautiful and heartbreaking story I have tears in my eyes again just thinking about it. I've read all Jodi’s books and I loved them all but this one? This one I will remember forever.
If you’re looking for romance you’ll barely feel it in this story. This story talks about a newlywed couple struggling with the fact that one of them has cancer. The woman can barely support them financially since he can’t work and she struggles a lot, feels very alone and even thinks/ attempts to kill herself. She finds a bit of solace in the man that nearly killed her by accident. They develop a beautiful and strong friendship. The scenes with the couple are very strong and dramatic so be advised before you read it but there are also many funny scenes with other characters so it lightens the mood a bit. Despiteall this, it’s a beautiful story about love, friendship, and loyalty. If you can get past all the triggers, you definitely should read it. I’ll never forget this book. It will be forever engraved in my mind and for that, I’ll give it 5 stars.
Prepare yourself once again for the storytelling brilliance of Jodi Ellen Malpas. Keep those tissues close as you fall into Lo’s world; you will find it very hard to leave.
This book is totally consuming. It’s a romantic, heart wrenching story. It’s tragic. And it’s beautiful.
Steve (the puppy) and Lo’s dog, Boris, are the sweet, comic relief needed here.
Luke and his best friend Todd are the ultimate “bromance”. Jodi is a master at writing intriguing, captivating secondary characters and Todd, Luke’s grandpa (“pop”) and daughter Tia are no exception. And I can’t tell you how many times I wanted to smack Lo’s mother-in-law, Linda. Evil cow.
If you have a beating heart, you will cry so be prepared for that. Lo’s strength and determination are nothing short of amazing and emotionally heart wrenching. Luke, the man who comes into her life at exactly the right time, however unexpectedly, will capture your heart. He’s giving, kind, selfless to a fault, and will tear at your heart strings. There’s nothing more I can say without giving away the story and I want everyone to experience this gorgeous tale of loss, and ultimately hope, as I did, without knowing any of what’s to come.
Jodi, thank you for this exquisite read and an ending I’m still shedding tears over. No matter how long it takes, love ultimately wins. Brilliant Jodi. Stunningly brilliant.
What a wonderful, sad story. This book is about love, friendship, and sacrifice. Lo and Billy were newly married when Billy experienced severe pain in his back. This turned into a life-threatening situation. Lo was sick with worry and sadness trying to care for her husband when she accidentally met Luke. And by accident, I mean Luke almost ran her and her dog over. Without much money, Luke offered to pay for the vet bill. From there, they became friends and not in a loving way. Lo had no friends, and Luke knew she was married but didn't know of his illness. As Billy's illness got worse, Lo got more tired and exhausted. Luke didn't know what to make of this. He thought her husband wasn't a good man. He couldn't have been more wrong. Lo's heart was breaking more daily while Luke supported her as a friend. I literally cried at one point. Loved all the characters and the narrators. Wonderful read
This was a good book, you didn't know to cry, cheer or laugh, you are definitely going through every emotion you have. Just imagine the day of your wedding you and your true love are having the best day of your life with most beautiful wedding ever. Now you are on your way your two week honeymoon and your new husband pass out in the airport. Only for him to find out after he wakes that he has terminal cancer. You have been married 1 day and now have to take care of a husband & watch him why he disappear to nothing.
Luke Williamson was driving one night and comes to a sudden stop because a you woman & her dog walks out in front of his car. Luke is a gentlmen but likes his women a little young due to committment phobia. So he forms a friendship with Lo and becomes her best friend, Luke knows she has baggage but Lo soon becomes depended on Luke for letting her escape her personal life. However is Luke sacrificing his own happiness?
I’m struggling a little to put this review together, and to do this book justice. For You is so different, and unlike anything else I’ve read from JEM. For You is a tragic, heartbreaking, and at times heartwarming. A story of love, guilt, loss, a beautiful friendship and sacrifice. Told in duel pov.
I really don’t want to say much about the story in my review. I think you have to experience this unpredictable, heartbreaking journey, alongside, Lo. Lo and Billy’s lives and beautiful future is turned upside down and they find themselves in the absolute saddest of situations. With no light in their future, just a sad, lonely darkness with little hope. Lo doesn’t like to infect others with her misery, so she carries all the burden and heartbreak on her small shoulders.
In the midst of her misery she falls into the path of a man, Luke. He sees the sadness that burdens Lo, he see the unmovable heartbreak in her eyes. They strike up a beautiful friendship, and Lukes has one goal with Lo, to give her a slight reprieve from her sadness and to make her smile, and even laugh. Her happiness is his happiness. Their friendship grows organically, and in Luke, Lo has found her little piece of escapism from her horrendous situation and a shoulder to lean on. Luke stole my heart, with his selflessness and beautiful, fun character.
For You, carries an heavy, sad theme. It’s a situation any one of us could, or already have found ourselves in. The realism is true, and that is what sends your emotions on a rollercoaster like no other. This book will consume you. For you, brings it home to you that we have absolutely no control over that big fragile muscle we have beating in our chest …when it loves, when it breaks or when it gives up...
We also get some fabulous JEM humour in this book, which is very much needed to give this book balance from the subject matter. As always from this author, the secondary characters are also fantastic, and bring some of that much needed humour. Oh, and not to forget “Steve”, he had me laughing out loud….woof.
This is not a typical JEM book, and In my opinion, this is Jodi Ellen Malpas’ best work. This book is so emotional. The love, sadness, friendship and loyalty is dripping off the pages, you don’t need a love scene in this book to give you all the feels. It’s beyond me how JEM wrote such a heartbreaking subject and situation so beautifully. She’s a truly talented writer.
I read a large amount of this book with an heavy heart and a lump in my throat, and yes, it did make me cry. It will break your heart, but also fulfil it, too. I won’t forget this book for a long time. Be warned, this book will leave you with the biggest book hangover lol.
For You, is a book you must experience. For You, is a special kinda book. ❤️
Well. That made me cry a lot! Such a beautiful but also such a super sad and heartbreaking story. I wanted a bit more after The End. I could've lived without the too many mentions of god and all that stuff. And I would've wanted Luke to be a tiny bit younger. But I loved reading this so much. Beautiful + heartbreaking book! • R E A D • I T •
#spoluprace
I couldn’t get into. I thought the timing of their relationship was very inappropriate. Even as just friends. If that friendship was so innocent, Lo would have certainly told her husband. And let a guy courts you while you are married and to a dying husband it isn’t appropriate as it isn’t nice. DNF at 30%
Lo's journey through love and loss is so heartbreaking and beautiful. Jodi has delivered one of the most memorable stories about dealing with the pain of watching a loved one go through dying and find a way to healing and love after loss.
I. AM. WRECKED! For You is easily one of the best books JEM has ever written. It's tragically beautiful and so human! It will shred your heart and make you laugh through tears, get angry, and feel numb and everything all at once. Billy, Lo, and Luke's story delves into some uncomfortable emotional topics, including terminal illness, verbally and emotionally abusive family, desertion, and death. Yet, it will also fill you with hope, love, and humor. So, be prepared with tons of tissues for ugly crying and crying from laughter.
Which brings me to the performances of Billie Fulford-Brown and Shane East. If they don't win awards for this I would be shocked and disappointed. They don't just read a book out loud. They portray and become these characters with every fiber of their being. Their attention to detail, down to the subtlest sigh, is absolute perfection. They elevated the story to a whole other level of emotional rawness and love. They deserve all of the standing ovations and bravos.
This is a beautifully written book by the very talented JEM.
I’m a little lost for words trying to articulate why I loved this as much as I did. It’s heartbreakingly beautiful 💔, funny, sad, happy… there wasn’t an emotion I didn’t feel in the day that it took me to read this.
I got to the last page and just wanted more.
My favourite quote: “Yeah, well, sometimes once is all it takes to realise you can’t live without someone.”
What a tearjerker! This book was raw, so very real, heartbreaking, and full of hope. This could be any of us in this situation. Lo and Billy's beginning was so heartfelt and romantic. Their future was bright and was full of love. It was so hard seeing all their hopes and dreams be crushed by this treacherous disease. You could feel Lo's despair bleeding through the pages. When Luke enters her world, he is the sun in her endless cloudy days. I loved seeing their friendship blossom. He was exactly who she needed at this time in her life. Luke was willing to wait forever for her. He was a great guy and just wanted to see Lo happy. So many moments throughout this book will have you tearing up. The ending was beautiful!! Billy gives his blessing to Lo, to let Luke love her. Billy wanted her to be happy and to live. Lo realizing that she needed to give love another chance and to not let Luke get away warmed my heart. Oh, and reuniting Pops and Milly Rose! It was sweet seeing them finally get their second chance.
OMG...this book! I didn't know what to expect but I never expected this!!
To be honest, it's one of my least favorite plots, however, I thought JEM handled things well. Still, it's hard to like a character and then have to go through that.
And...I really can't say more without spoiling things. It's a tough (but good) read. I liked how JEM worked things out. My only issue is there is no epilogue and I think having gone through all that, we deserved one.
It was an emotinally read, and having lost my mum to cancer and fighting cancer with my dad again is something physically and mentally consuming. I get all that Lo was living and cried reading some parts. Anyway the romance is not very developed in my opinion and the ending a bit rushed.
This book is very different from everything JEM has written in the past, though the quality of the writting and everything I came to expect from her is there. Just not the plot. And I can't avoid but admit that the story wasn't a romance for me either, in the sense that the main couple wasn't in a romantic relatioship for the majority of the book. Of course I knew that this is where it was going but the sadness and struggle of Lo's life combined with the profound love she has for her husband, didn't allow me to enjoy her blooming feelings for Luke. Now, Luke is an amazing character and he evolved a lot during the story and in the end I was really glad for his HEA. Overall, I did enjoy the book (even if it wasn't what I expected it to be going in) despite the fact that some things didn't work for me.
One of the best and most heart wrenching books I have ever read. So far from jodi's normal books but one of her greatest. I devoured it in one sitting and I've got a serious book hangover.
'If you think you've read the most emotional, moving, ugly-cry book, think again. For You is in a whole league of its own & shows how powerful Queen JEM really is!' - The British Bibliophile
For You is a surprise release by the Queen of edgy romance herself, Jodi Ellen Malpas. This release is a standalone love story that details and depicts the raw realism, unpredictability and rollercoaster that is real life. Books are often an escape from reality, but this read brings our two world seamlessly together again.
*There will be SPOILERS about For You from this point onwards, so if you don't want to know any of those, please click away now :) *
Lo Harper is a woman with the classic 'hopeless romantic', happily-ever-after heart. She embodies all that is hopeful and positive about people and living life for your heart, happiness and to follow your dreams. Meeting her Prince Charming--Aka Billy--was only the start of her story and her happily ever after. Alas, not all are meant to stand the test of time. On the pinnacle of the part of the happily ever after when the boy get the girl, they marry and start their life together, everything comes to a grinding halt. On the way to their much-anticipated honeymoon, her prince is befallen with something that threatens any hope of a bright future with the woman he loves. Still the optimist, Lo takes on the role of saviour and endeavours to be the one to save her prince for his sake, and for hers.
The ship to forever that Lo and Billy were sailing on together not only has only the captain (Lo) at the wheel, but it also has lost all of its crew. Having watched her dreams and happily ever after that was once within reach now slip slowly away, Lo is left to stumble and plod her way through her days while caring for her fallen prince. Quite simply, her character highlights those who often have to go through things on their own. Not everyone has a massive support network when you are the person caring for someone who is suffering, and her character is one that shows that the carer as much as the person who is ill, is someone who suffers as well. While all the focus is usually on the suffer--and it is at several points within this story--, the focus is primarily on Lo out of her and Billy, carrying us along as if we were the ones right in her shoes with her.
That is, until something or other in this case, someone, comes along when all hope seems lost and provides that potential silver lining. Luke Williamson is that potential lining for Lo. First introduced to both us as readers and to Lo as a kind stranger who happens to be in the right place at the right time--almost like a guardian angel, minus the whole almost running her down part--, giving her the first step in coming away from the direction she was about to go into, and turning her down another path instead.
Luke Williamson is Lo's second chance prince, but not her first shot at love. Billy was supposed to be her forever, but Luke comes along like a white knight when fate decides that she needs saving not because she's a heroine who needs saving from danger, but from herself, her mind and the unrelenting nature of life not giving someone a break. Luke is a typical standup, good guy would literally do anything for anyone, strangers included, for no gain or reason other than to simply help them out. A good samaritan. His good deeds keep on coming when it comes to Lo and what's more, he finds that he wants to keep feeling as good as he does when he does them, when he isn't doing them. He wants her company. He wants her friendship. He wants her . One of the only things stopping him from making her, his, is her husband. A man whom he doesn't know is suffering in a way no man should at his age. When the truth comes to light, he knows what he must to in order to give the person he loves the best shot at a slice of happiness. Even if it means he takes a step back, and another, until he isn't in the picture any more.
For You is pure embodiment of self-sacrifice, endless love, devotion and putting others before yourself. Both Lo, Luke and the story all contribute towards this and the sheer power of Jodi's words and her writing could only deliver them in such a way that will quite literally have you sobbing like your own heart is breaking along with the characters'. There is no escaping the raw nature and pain behind them or the situations, feelings and words from the characters' own mouths, no one will be immune to just how much has been poured into every single sentence--every word in every sentence--, and the true meaning behind what this novel stands for. Love. This is a love story. Not a romance. Love is so much more than what is often written about in romance novels, tv/streaming adaptations or even the glossy version that is often presented to us. Love can and does mean pain, hurt, sadness, despair and hopelessness just as much it does all the good things we know or have heard about it. Jodi does not shy away from keeping it as real as she is, and for once I'm hand on heart glad that I could feel everything that was intended to come out of Lo, Billy & Luke's story.
After hearing via a live stream the other day the intentions why Jodi chose to release this book the way she did and why, my respect and admiration for her can only grow continuously through endless bounds. She writes stories for her, not for her readers and as a steadfast readers of hers I am applauding her for making that decision. It is easy to cave to pressure and demands but as outlined in this story, that doesn't need to be the case. You need to do what you want, for yourself and not for anyone else. Your life is your own and no one else can tell you what to do in it, and if there's something you want to do then you must do it for the reasons you want to do them for. Be it a dream or a spur-of-the-moment kind of thing, as long as you do it for you, that's what matters. I, personally, could not be more glad that this story sat on her laptop waiting to come out for us all to embrace and adore. Good things come to those who wait and this was one good thing that was worth waiting for, even if we didn't know it. This was clearly meant to be and has already resounded with both myself and other readers, and I for one am immensely proud of Jodi for birthing this bookish beauty in all its glory.
Where I was once 'team prep' when it comes to books, I'm officially a convert to team 'surprise release' because if it means more quality books like this will be coming out of her brilliant mind, sign me up! I'm glad that it was this book that brought me over to the other side, because there's no going back and I'm glad it was Jodi Ellen Malpas that brought me here.
Although the story is 'Happy For Now', I personally wouldn't mind more of Lo & Luke. Life will always continue to throw curveballs, and it would be a pleasure to read where life would take these two second chance soulmates next.
The most beautiful heartbreaking yet heartwarming story you will ever read of Lo, Billy , Luke and others.
My head is normally in the gutter when it comes to JEM books not with this book. Right now, at this point in my life I very much needed this beautiful story.
For You is Raw and Pure about love friendship, and pain. There may be subjects in this story which you may be able to relate to, which makes this book even more amazing as it is written so delicately. You can feel how much emotion went into the written.
There is no way of reading For you with without a flood of tears escaping but yet you will find yourself hysterically laughing in other chapters. A story which will always stay with you and take a piece of your heart.
This book is a book you have to read at some point in your life. Jodi Ellen Malpas’s best written yet.
I really wanted to love this one as I normally love JEM books but this one wasn’t it for me.
⭐️⭐️⭐️.5/5 🌶/5
90% of the book I just felt so sad for the FMC and I got a bit cringy at times with the dynamics. Then at the end I was hopeful for a lot more that just wasn’t there and without giving spoilers just ended abruptly.
Lo marries the love of her life, but quickly everything changes when he’s diagnosed with cancer. After a terrible day she meets Luke, a successful man who literally saves her. They start a friendship that helps Lo get through everything going on.
I'm literally lost for words. This story is beautifully heartbreaking, you're kept on your toes right till the last chapter. Both Lo and Luke broke my heart for different reasons. Luke made me laugh with his antics and Steve. Yet again this world Jodi has created is one I didn't want to leave. All of the side characters are absolutely perfect. I'll admit I was a snotting snivelling mess. All I can say is masterpiece
A beautiful heartbreaking love story. Painful in its beauty. Their story will have you smiling, crying, mourning and laughing. A gripping page turner dealing with loss and selfless love.
4.75 stars “I didn’t realize I was crying and that’s sad in itself, because I’m at the point that it happen so often, I’m almost immune to sensing it” how life put you in circumstances where you lose all hope losing the person’s you love most felling guilty for smile. But make a friendship that’s unexpected because you purposely walk in first of his car and he in return fell in love with you but had to let you go.
I’m am destroyed. Do not start reading this on the tube on your way home from work. You will cry. A lot. Couldn’t put it down. I’m not someone that normally reads a crying book but I couldn’t put this down. The book ended a bit abruptly for me and I desperately needed it to have an epilogue.
This book was incredible. It absolutely wrecked me and put me back together. This is a book that everyone should read and I recommend it to everyone! What a powerful story.
This is definitely different than a usual JEM book but honestly it was incredible. This is not your typical romance book but it is a very powerful story about love and the sacrifices you make for the ones you love.
I absolutely loved the characters. I loved how patient Luke was with Lo.
I love everything Jodi writes but this one was definitely her best. I honestly don’t want to say too much because it’s better to just read the book and see for yourself.
I listened to the audiobook and it was incredible! Shane East is one of my all time favorite narrators and like every other performance he played the part of Luke incredibly. Billie Fulford-Brown did an amazing job bringing the part of Lo to life. To capture the devastation, anguish, and utter exhaustion she did an amazing job.
I can honestly say I have never experienced so many emotions from reading a story before now. I just couldn’t put the book down desperate to reach the HEA (or so I hoped) yet I didn’t want the story to end either. Another amazingly captivating story by JEM with some beautiful and dreamy worthy characters. Ahhhhh Luke, the compassion and patience of a saint. What it must be like to be loved by someone so fiercely yet unconditionally. Serious book hangover
A completely different book from Jodi but a book I couldn’t put down. The ur story is sensitive and beautiful and upsetting whilst being captivating. Lo is the leading lady and she is a strong, heartbroken, shell of the women she once was. Luke is handsome, caring and loves lo from the start and then there’s Billy who is los husband. A complicated and heartbreaking story but a beautifully written book.
What a gorgeous read, heartbreaking but uplifting too. Such a heartbreaking story handled beautifully, delicately and in a way that has made my breath catch and tears fall. Life is simply too short, grasp onto it and let yourself be happy :-)
