Barbara Wood

She grew up in Southern California and attended Los Angeles Schools. After High School, Barbara attended the University of California at Santa Barbara but left to train as a surgical technician. More like 1 1/2 stars. Waste of time. Too melodramatic with saccharine romance. Many historical inaccuracies and anachronisms, e.g., forks in Nero's day.

Llegué a casi el penúltimo capítulo. Y en realidad es muy raro que no termine un libro.
Debo decir que tenía expectativas altísimas respecto a este, ya que se desprende de El fuego de la vida, un libro que amé y me atrapó completamente. La Adivina me decepcionó mucho.
Debo empezar hablando un poco del libro y de cómo se conecta con El fuego de la vida, que es como su predecesora aunque sean libros independientes.
Ulrika es una joven que parte en busca de su padre, el príncipe bárbaro Wulf. Durante esta travesía, ella se descubre a sí misma, así como desarrolla su particular don.
Empezaré por el estilo de Barbara Wood. He leído dos libros de ella que me encantaron (Las Vírgenes del Paraíso y El fuego de la vida), lograron mantenerme pegada al libro en todo momento, sin pausas. Sin embargo, en este libro, quizá sean cosas mías o qué sé yo, sentí que le faltó ese algo que te mantiene unido al libro. Los sucesos eran aburridos y todo era muy predecible. Me aburrió muchísimo que el libro repitiera tanto lo mismo, cada tanto, Timónides hacía de las suyas con el horóscopo a conveniencia para alejar a Ulrika, y así.
A la mitad ya me dieron ganas de abandonar la lectura. Sabía perfectamente lo que sucedería. Repito, me decepcionó. Y hubieron muchísimas cosas innecesarias.
Los personajes...
Empecemos por la protagonista; Ulrika. Ulrika fue lo que me motivó a leer este libro, ya que mientras leía El fuego de la vida, se me hizo un personaje muy interesante y tenía ganas de saber más de ella. Así que esto aumentaba mis expectativas al respecto. Y bueno, terminé odiándola. Se me hizo tonta, obsesiva, demasiado arrogante y dependiente en niveles increíbles de un hombre. Me molestaba que cada pensamiento se dirigiese a Sebastiano. Yo me esperaba a una mujer como Selene, independiente y con objetivos claros. La odié, me cayó mal. Se me hizo un personaje predecible, al igual que la historia, y plano.
Creo que lo único que puedo rescatar de La Adivina y que sí me gustó fue el personaje de Sebastiano y un par de capítulos. Sin embargo, Wood apenas le sacó provecho a Sebastiano, siendo que él tiene muchísimo potencial. Siento que se centró más en el romance (que se me hizo muy forzoso) que en la historia en sí.

This book is about a quest, but I never felt that either the quest itself or the ultimate results were important.
Ulrika is a young woman in the first century C.E. who sees visions and wants to know why. She travels from Rome to Germania to Babylon to Persia looking for a teacher or a revelation. In the course of her quest, she meets many people of different religious beliefs. It appears that the main theme is that people can be spiritual in different ways, but the beliefs were treated so superficially that I never really felt they had the power that the characters believed.
I have enjoyed Barbara Wood's earlier books that tell stories about people (Domina, Green City in the Sun, Vital Signs) but when she uses the characters in order to explore belief systems instead, the story loses narrative value and isn't nearly as interesting.

Ambientada en el Siglo I d.c. en Roma, conocemos Ulrika, una joven que ha nacido con
visiones extrañas y que por más que trata de averiguar de qué se trata no lo logra.
Sólo sabe que hay un lobo que la llama.
De un momento para otro sabe que debe encontrar a su padre, a quién no conocer para
avisarle de una gran guerra que azotará a su pueblo.
En este viaje en solitario Ulrika conocerá mas de sus raíces que lo que lo ha hecho
en toda su vida.
Si bien es cierto, me gusta Wood, creo que éste libro es bastante flojo y muy lento, por
otro lado, podrás aprender mucho porque tiene momentos históricos reales.

Si eres una persona a la que le gustan las historias contadas con detalle como a mi, este es tu libro.
Logra transportarte a los ambientes descritos y también a sus culturas.
La autora dedica el tiempo suficiente para que el lector comprenda todo aquello que le quiere transmitir sin quedarse en superficialidades.
Te empapa su trama, la forma de ser de los personajes, sus sentimientos, miedos y sueños y te atrapa.
No la recomiendo a lectores ansiosos que desean un desenlace rápido pero si a aquellos que disfrutan de una trama compleja y elaborada.
Logra transportarte a los ambientes descritos y también a sus culturas.

Hace tiempo no leímos Bárbara Wood y siempre termina por encantarnos. En este libro tenemos una mezcla de intriga, romance y esoterismo.
A diferencia de sus otros libros, este es mucho más corto, si es que nunca has leído a Wood este es una muy buena opción para empezar!!
Esta ambientada en una época de la edad antigua, muy entretenida, a la que nos transportamos fácilmente por medio de su apasionante relato.

Me ha encantado. Una historia muy bonita y con un gran contenido espiritual y sentimental. Sin que parezca que ocurran cosas, ocurre mucho, sólo por ver el destino de todos los personajes que conforman la historia, cada cuál más interesante.

No estoy segura de qué esperaba de este libro, pero sin dudas es mucho menos de lo que me terminó dando.
La historia comienza con Ulrika una joven romana con un desconocido padre germano que parte en su búsqueda para advertirle sobre su pronta captura luego de haber tenido extraños sueños. En el camino, Ulrika es ayudada por el comerciante Sebastiano y el astrologo Timónides, mientras intenta averiguar el origen de su don adivinatorio.
El objetivo de la búsqueda de Wulf es fácilmente olvidado a los pocos capítulos y Ulrika se enreda en sucesos inverosímiles en los diez años que abarca el libro. Sinceramente, había partes que la trama no tenía sentido ni continuidad, saltaba fácilmente períodos de tiempo de semanas a meses y resumía sucesos importantísimos en pocas líneas, para luego dedicar páginas enteras a descripciones de sucesos sin importancia, como los cargamentos que los comerciantes llevaban a china… En serio, ¿qué diablos? ¿No era más interesante contar las batallas de Wulf en vez de la travesía de Sebastiano a China? ¿Por qué no contar a más detalle la historia de Iskander en vez de la travesía de Ulrika para encontrar los lagos?
No me creí para nada la historia de amor entre Ulrika y Sebastiano. Demasiado fácil, demasiado rápido. Pasan unas semanas juntos (en las que casi no hablan) y se juran amor eterno… ¡Y luego se separan siete años! Obviamente, el amor sigue intacto luego de ese tiempo, poco importa que él haya visitado otras culturas, ampliado sus horizontes, y ella haya tenido una revelación espiritual, siguen siendo iguales al final del libro. Son personajes pobrísimos, que no crecen, ni aprenden nada en toda la historia. Y quiero recalcar, nuevamente, ¡que pasan diez años!
Lo más interesante del libro, sin duda, son las subtramas. Como la del príncipe Isaknder y Veeda, la de Raquel y su marido, la de Wulf… ¡Cualquier cosa menos las historia de Ulrika! Lo más triste es que la autora no se aprovecho de esas tramas secundarias para nutrir la historia, simplemente las conto al pasar y sin entrar en detalle.
La autora intenta contar de manera “amena” sucesos históricos, pero no llega ni a los talones a otros autores. Cuando se ponía a dar datos, era como leer un manual de historia y detenía la narración por una o dos páginas para contar cosas que, al final, no tenían ningún impacto en la trama.
No me gusto para nada. Mi primera decepción del año.

I believe some books are meant to touch your life at certain points, as if by fate. For me, the two books of Barbara Woods that I have read so far, The Prophetess and The Divining, have both done just that.
After completing the research on a current novel-in-progress, I have developed an insatiable appetite for all things Germania, prior to the 12th century AD. The Divining takes place during the 1st century AD when the western world was ruled by Rome and trade with China was still a dream.
The story's main character is a young, amazing but naive woman who, through trying to find herself, leaves the security of Rome to learn more about her mysterious and absent father in Germania. From page one, I was absorbed into a time and place within history. A time when the early Christian Church was still a group of Christ's followers were meeting in secret to avoid persecution. A time when healers and seers, who were just beginning to be persecuted by those in power, were still esteemed.
The history within this novel is well researched, the characters well developed and as for the plot, truly never a dull moment.

Un espléndido relato de aventuras y viajes, pletórico de lugares exóticos, tierras esplendorosas, peligros que acechan en los rincones más inesperados.
Es una novela hermosa, de enorme espiritualidad, con maravillosas y sencillas descripciones de culturas ancestrales que, miles de años después, comparten los mismos miedos, pecados y virtudes de los que habitamos el mundo hoy en día.
También combina una preciosa historia de amor con mucha pasión. Léela, si te gusta la ficción histórica, es una gran elección :o)

Another stunning saga from Ms. Wood. Taking off from where Soul Flame ends, we take up the story of Ulrika, Selene's daughter, who much like her mother, is on her own journey to discover who she is and what her life is meant for. We follow her through love, connected strongly, pulled taught and held strong, through country after country and teacher after teacher as she learns of the gift that has come through her blood line. A fantastic trip through the ancient world, though a little more on the culture of the places and their habits would have been nice (though we do see this in one or two places). A great read for fans of Ancient Rome, long journeys and love stories.

Une belle héroïne, un roman historique tout à fait captivant !

I generally really like Barbara Wood's books but for some reason this one seemed off to me. It takes place around 50 AD in Rome. The history part was interesting- and the side trip to China was also. I just didn't care much about the characters and what happened to them. I also felt like there was too much going on as the characters traveled here and there and no time to be interested in anyone that they met or anything that they did.

This was a wonderful story set in 54 through 64 C.E. / A.D. Nineteen year old Ulrika, a healer who has strange and mysterious visions and dreams, leaves ancient Rome to find her destiny, and to try to understand the purpose of her visions. As she heads toward Germania, her father's homeland, she meets many people along the way, some of whom will impact her greatly on her spiritual quest, as she in turn impacts them in ways they will never forget.

I really loved this author's The Dreaming years ago and thought that I would try this one...lots of mystic type of happenings that occur at the beginning of the C.E. Can't put my finger on why this appealed to me except for the historical and adventure of it all. P.S. Don't judge a book by it's cover! ; )
