Arsène Lupin #2, 6, 8, 11

An Arsène Lupin Omnibus

Rate this book
Enter Arsène Lupin, Gentleman – Cambrioleur, the ‘Prince of Thieves’, one of the most daring and dashing individuals who ever lifted a diamond necklace from under the noses of the authorities. Young and handsome, laughing his way through difficulties and danger, Lupin is also the master of disguise and languages. His sense of humour and conceit make life difficult for the police who attribute most of the major crimes in France to Lupin and his gang of ruffians and urchins.

Maurice Leblanc’s stories are lively and witty, occasionally taking on the air of burlesque, especially when Lupin pits his wits against the English detective named variously ‘Holmlock Shears’ and ‘Herlock Sholmes’

These are significant tales in the history of crime fiction but, more importantly, they are great fun.

Contents:

Arsene Lupin vs Holmlock Shears

and finally I finished with a big smile on my face..
first a small Arsene Lupin history of my own
I am a fan of Arsene Lupin since I was in high school which is yeeaaars back, back then I only read the Arabic translation and collecting the different old yellow paged volumes became a treasure hunt that I do every year in the book fair held in Egypt...
so when I found an English translation in the book fair , and a new edition at that, was like finding the wining ticket, I will finally read another if not better translation of what I was reading all these years ago...but have to admit, it was not a better translation, cos it was almost as same as I remembered in the Arabic version. the amount of joy and thrill was the same, if it proven anything that Arsene Lupin is and will be one of my forever agelss favorite characters, I wish I can read it in its genuine french but I have to be satisfied with what I have for now...

about the plot, if you are not Familiar with Arsene Lupin.. I can summarize it to you as the opposite of Sherlcok HOlmes, he is a thief, and sometimes a detective who gets his own fees.
and as much as I am a Sherlock Holmes fan , in the actual Literature I prefer Lupin.
Sherlock has better luck when it comes to screen adaptation, but in books Lupin is more fun to read, than our genius arrogant detective.

in this collection we have a proof in Arsene Lupin Vs Helmock Shears ( Conan Doyle didn't like the idea of his detective being ridiculed so they changed the name "completely" as you can see) I think this enough to summaries what you are up against when you dig into this..

This Wordsworth edition is a selection of Maurice Leblanc's Arsène Lupin stories, including -
No. 2 Arsène Lupin versus Holmlock Shears (Arsène Lupin contre Herlock Sholmès, 1908)
No. 6 The Confessions of Arsène Lupin (Les Confidences d'Arsène Lupin, 1913)
No. 8 The Golden Triangle (Le Triangle d'or, 1918)
No.11 The Eight Strokes of the Clock (Les Huit Coups de l'horloge, 1923)

A choice of four Maurice Leblanc's books. The first is two long stories in which Lupin comes up against English detective Holmlock Shears, aka Sherlock Holmes, the second short stories, 'The Golden Triangle' is a full length novel, and 'The Eight Strokes of the Clock' is a series of linked stories.

This book is terribly funny and will appeal to Holmes fans. I'm amazed it's not better-known.

Totally ludicrous but hugely entertaining, I think I have a crush on Arsene Lupin.

A thoroughly enjoyable collection, worth a look for The Eight Strokes of the Clock alone. As a Holmes fan I can't quite bring myself to like Arsene Lupin versus Holmlock Shears, but I can appreciate a decent mystery when I see one; not necessarily enough to recommend it by itself though. The Golden Triangle is where long-form starts to suit Lupin, though it works more as an adventure than as a particularly airtight mystery. And The Confessions of Arsene Lupin are a decent starting point for some of the character's less law-abiding adventures, with a lot of charm and action.

Did not finish. Read the two “Holmlock Shears” stories and two other short stories and gave up. The mysteries, deductions, and tricks were not particularly interesting; Holmlock Shears is a hilarious name, but the actual character did not capture his name sake; most other characters, including Lupin himself, were not terribly interesting. It wasn’t outright bad, but didn’t grab me enough to warrant reading this entire 700+ page book.

An omnibus of four Arsene Lupin novels, this is exactly what I expected it to be: young sleuth and gentleman Arsene Lupin at his very best behaviour as he steals things he likes and solves crimes and mysteries. A mix of detective stories and closed-room mysteries and thefts, Lupin is a fascinating character who was created to steal some of the glory of Sherlock Holmes and did so wonderfully.

I loved the stories in this, they are amusing, charming, scary and strange.
I was less keen on the novelettes at the end as they were darker in tone and Arsene featured only slightly, but overall it was a great pleasure to read.

I'd say the last and final story of the omnibus lifted this brick of a book from 1,5 stars to 2,5 stars.

Tremendous fun.
The four books in this omnibus offer us four different takes on the character of Arsène Lupin. In the first he's an imp pin-pricking The Great Detective Holmlock Shears (a nicely-observed Holmes parody with his sidekick the long-suffering "Unspeakable Wilson.") The short stories in the second book present him as criminal mastermind, great detective, or both as the mood and situation take him. The third book is a well-paced adventure set in the First World War with Lupin arriving late on, almost as a deux ex machina, to unravel the mystery. Finally we have a collection of stories in which Lupin us almost a young, energetic, amorous Hercule Poirot.
As I say, tremendous fun, very readable and all due credit both to the author and the translator.

I've never been in to Sherlock Holmes, though I do love the board game 221B Baker Street.

However, I'm all about a clever villain who can outwit the much-beloved-by-others Holmes. And so far, Lupin isn't disappointing me. (It probably helps that he shares a surname with a beloved HP character).

I really enjoyed reading about Arsene Lupin. There were points where some of the stories dragged on too long, but for the most part, these were really fun and well thought-out. I will say the different books within this book didn't always feel like the same main character (Lupin against Holmlock Shears felt VERY different than Lupin in the Eight Strokes of the Clock). But overall, I really enjoyed these mysteries and would absolutely read this again!

This is, I think, a collection of four books of Lupin stories which vary in quality. Overall, it is still enjoyable read, but the longer stories suffer from being so, and I found some of the old fashioned morals a bit off-putting as they are generally from Lupin himself, or those we are meant to side with. If you do get the book, don't read the chapter titles in the contents page as there's a rather larger spoiler in there.

If you like Hercule Poirot, you will like Arsene Lupin. I don't think the Lupin mysteries are quite as deft as Poirot, and sometimes not all the threads come together, but the characters and the delicious interplay between the detective and his greatest and most admired criminal genius are really enjoyable.

I've read about 100 pages of this. I thought it was fun and quite enjoyed it, but now I've got the sense of what it's about and how it's written, I don't feel any need to carry on with it.
