Harriet Ziefert grew up in North Bergen, New Jersey, where she attended the local schools. She graduated from Smith College, then received a Masters degree in Education from New York University.

For many years, Ziefert was an elementary school teacher. She taught most grades from kindergarten to fifth grade. "I liked it," she said, but she stopped teaching when she had her own sons. When her children were older, Ziefert wanted "a bigger arena" for her work. She went to work at a publishing company, Scholastic in New York City, developing materials for teacher's guides for kindergarten language arts and social studies programs.

"About twelve years ago," says Ziefert in a 1995 interview, "I tried to get a job as an editor, but no one would hire me as a trade editor. So I decided to write my own books." Since then, she has written several hundred books, mostly picture books and easy-to-read books. "I write books very quickly," she says, "in about twelve hours. I rewrite them three times over three days, and then they're done." She writes about twenty books a year.

If you're looking for a book to help your child learn to read, then you must check out the Flip-A-Word series published by Blue Apple Books. This phonetic series is great for those learning to read, with a maximum of only 1 to 3 words per page. Bold, colorful illustrations and paper cut outs will keep your child interested in books and reading.

In Snake Cake, the author introduces the -ake, -oat, and -ant word families. With a simple turn of the page, cake becomes snake, then bake and finally rake. Presto-change-o! Check it out!

Um um um um um um moo!

I liked it because the book is nice and there was a snake kind of like, well, it's not looks like the rake. The snake is not good because the rake is their friend but the snake is a little slanted. The rake is... so there's a snake.

And there's a girl so I laughed, laughed, laughed. Then there's a goat. It looks like it's on the mountain. And there's a goat floating and the goat is on the boat. And an ant is have plants. And it want to run away.

Goodbye.

I liked it because it's just...I just like it. And I like it so much because it's a really fun story. And I like it because it's kind of like cut up stories and I've never seen cut up stories. So, there's a cake that's kind of -- at first, it's on a plate and it's tall. And second, it's small and it's in an oven and it doesn't have a bottom.

And I like cut up stories because I really, really love it. I just really, really love it.
Goodbye!

I read this book along with my 6 year old daughter. More accurately she read it to me. It is a great book for the youngsters just learning to read. It's easy words and short sentences help teach rhyming words and letter families.

Another fabulous learn-to-read book for the youngest among us. Each book in the series has 3 word families (ie -ake, -ow, -ant) that shows, with peek-through pages no less, words that rhyme and how they can begin to create sentences. I'm a huge fan. So is my 3 1/2 year old. Win-win!

It is the first book my son actually read himself! It's better than usual "leveled reading". Simple words, no sentences, bright pictures that actually illustrate the words, interesting pages, the possibility of making a story for ourselves - all these encourage a beginning reader to try.

Great for new readers! Kids learn letter combinations (oat, ake, ow) with fun, colorful pictures. The author has out there in the same series.

Best phonics book I've yet to come across. Bright colors, bold playful graphics and lift-the-flap to boot. Totally buying this for when my seedling is older.
