In the Names of God, Nathan Stone has a unique background in writing this. Orphaned at a young age, he went to live with a relative that was Jewish and went to Jewish school, later on he moved in with another relative that was Christian. The pages thou not conversational, did reasonate a reverance and love for God. He says and I totally agree, that we can only enjoy God to the degree that we know him. Little knowledge translate into little spiritual power or life. He continues to say that learning about God's names and titles offers us a fresh way of encountering God and sensing his presence in our lifes. His name and the meanings point to the God's Lordship in our life and we can receive blessings as we in faith apply the names of God into our lives. We are reminded from the prophet Hosea that it is the lack of knowledge of God that his people perish. The names of God are introduced in the bible and from there we are introduced to yet another name that reflects his character. I would love to have a bible that actually reflects these names. Most of the time it is Lord. His names also reflect his covenant relationship to his people. His sovereignity and his Glory. It seemed to me that each time that God revealed himself to his people, it was to their benefit and to his Glory. That by faith, we can cling to the promises of God. What we gain has his people for our reward and faithfulness lies in our increasing apprehension and possession of the Lord Himself. He is our inheirtance. I was struck in how God revealed himself to Abraham, which we all know the story. How Abraham offered his son has a sacrifice. Each time as a believer, when we act in faith, God reveals himself to us in a mighty way.

I am recommending this book as one of my top 5 reads - EVER! The introduction to the character and nature of God through the many names as given in Scripture was a life changer for me. The names made these declarations both real and personal - making for a closer relationship with God. This book also makes for ma great reference tool and can be taught in any home, church or school.

Excellent book! If you want to understand God a little better, read this book!!! One of the ways God revealed Himself to us is by the names He called Himself as he dealt with His children in the Old Testament. You'll come to know Him better, and also worship Him!

Although some of the Old English was difficult for the youngest one to understand, I approached each one as a learning opportunity. I must confess that a couple of the words were unfamiliar to me as well. 1828 Webster's online dictionary was absolutely essential in discovering how these once common words mean. My favorite name of God (if that is allowed?), is Jehovah Rohi. First mentioned in Psalm 23 when King David was nearing the end of his life, his reflections on his life clearly were profound. God had guided David through trials and joys, and then more trials. At the end of his life, David recognized that he had all he needed: God and God alone. What profound insight for us to learn from! I read this book along with my two youngest high schoolers. Upon completing the book today, we took turns sharing. One shared learning that Jehovah Shalom means, He is our Peace, helped her to grasp the tradition of Jewish people in the past and present greeting and parting with "Shalom". I would highly recommend this book! Understanding a few of the names of God will go a long way in allowing you to grow in your faith and trust in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

I read this book a very long time ago, it has been on my mind to read as I wanted to remind myself of the names if God. Hard part could not remember the Author, took me a while to Google and actually find it as there are now so many books with similar titles.
I realy enjoyed the book, definitely deserves an annual re read.

This was one of the reference books used by Kay Arthur to write her Bible study LORD, I Want To Know You. If you desire to know more of who God is, I highly recommend both Nathan Stone's book and Kay Arthur's study on the Hebrew names of God. Each of God's Hebrew names reveals one of His character traits. Discovering who He is based on the names He revealed in His Word is an awe-inspiring journey of discovery of our awesome God.

A great book with a lot of information! I'll be re-reading it a few more times. It's nice the way it's broken down and built up as you progress. The chapters are short and easy to read (aside from the KJV) and I hope to study this book more throughout my life.

This book is absolutely amazing, I would recommend it to every Christian. He goes through the Old Testament explaining the different names of God used and when they are revealed. Each chapter adds another layer of beauty to the gospel. Truly one of the best books I’ve ever read!

This was a challenging read but I still learned a lot. I think it might have been helpful if I’d taken notes along the way because it’s on the drier side of texts. However, it was quite helpful to deepen my understanding of the names of God— several of which I’d never heard before.

This book would be accomplished best in small chunks and as a Bible Study type situation. A great resource but not as much a casual read!

Nathan Stone has done a great job in this little book. His approach is careful and not too academic. He does not try to make many applications to our own lives but simply states who God is using a few of His most well known names.
I have done extensive research on this subject for my own book and Nathan Stone's book, although it is older, is among the best of the shorter books on the subject (see my other reviews for the best).
My biggest concern with books like this is that they are selective; there are about 500 names of God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit in the Bible and to limit any study to a few fails to do justice to God's full character. Also, God is a personality and to dissect Him into a name per chapter is artificial.
Nonetheless, this is a good book.

For those who enjoy the original meaning of scripture, this book will be an enrich their understanding of the Bible. The author covers a dozen names of God that are commonly translated in the Bible as God or Lord. He provides the literal translation of scripture, then provides background on how the name developed.

For example, the first on the list is Elohim, that he describes as containing the general idea of greatness and glory; this is often the God of Creation. Another name, used in Judges, is Jehovah-shalom, meaning Jehovah is peace. And so each case is described for the reader.

Most of these names are simply translated as God or Lord in English Bibles, but Nathan Stone's explanation as depth to the meaning in each case.

Nathan Stone does an excellent job of showing how the names of God revealed in the Old Testament carry through into the New Testament. He also explains why God revealed a particular name at a specific time in history. The writing is on a level that anyone can understand, not just the academic theologian.
