If I had a nickel for every time the Leaving Cert had a central plot point being an old man in a position of power and respect forced a young girl to kill herself due to his pedophilia,I'd have 2 nickels, which isn't a lot,but it's weird that it happened twice right?
Again, mandated reading in order to teach to the LCAs. This was, so depressing yet I suppose it held me whenever I picked it up. A super gross story of an old man horndogging for a young girl in rural Ireland.
Read so I could chat to my son about his school work. A tough read with Sive’s life and fate reflecting the limited autonomy afforded to women in 1959s Ireland. Marriage and financial security override personal happiness. A life trapped in hostility, bitterness and hopelessness.
What else would you expect from the Leaving Cert? I personally enjoyed Sive, no matter how morbid it was. The start may have been a bit boring but it progressed steadily until the end. Nice one for a comparative study.
