It is of course beautiful. Had James Still been new to me, I would have staggered under the beauty of his poetic language. As it is, I had read most of the stories either in collections or in "cycle novel" form, the most famous unified grouping being "River of Earth." Olsen has edited beautifully and faithfully, trying to adhere to Still's seeming chronology. Since Still wasn't all that perfectly meticulous in records, Olson has done a great job with these masterful pieces of Appalachian literature. Some of the earlier stories, in particular, are vignettes which became parts of later stories. Some are uneven. This collection, however, combined with the recent publication of Stilll's unpublished novel, Chinaberry, are important to Still scholarship. Most of the stories are a joy to read.
