Quislings is rich in religion, lots of types. It's almost to the point that perhaps Poppet couldn't decide which one to follow, so studied and practiced them all.

This doesn't mean you're dragged through scripture after scripture. Instead you're thrust into things along with Usha (the female lead). You, as the reader, find out about the gods and their stories that span across multiple religions at the same time as she does.

The gradual unwrapping of information, through conversation or dreams or experiences in the story allows for the reader to feel as if they are along for the ride with Usha and her band of friends.

There are some dark themes, nothing too explicit, though a couple of scenes might upset some readers. Rape, violence and murder are involved in varying degrees, along with some cute fluffy animal cruelty.

I picked this book now because I was after a horror. Alas, this one is not. I was not in the slightest bit scared nor find the content to be horrifying. Except, perhaps the over-the-top poetic and flowery writing. At times it got too much and I wanted the claw my eyes out.

Examples from the prologue:
"He gives me a glistening stare across the table covered with mirror and glass..."

"...my voice scratches the crypt silence of the shrouded kitchen."

"...the abusive loud smash destroys what's left of my calm"

And these examples are in the first few pages, yet this type of language continues the whole way through the story.

I liked the premise, I enjoyed the discovery of the rich prophecy and religion, but it failed to ultimately deliver a holistically satisfying book.

Some things I noticed:

33% - ... Over reach (each) other.

61% - might want to advise what GSR is.

66% - her lags (legs) crossed on the seat.

91% - ...more security (than) she's ever had.

What could be better than a séance conducted on Halloween night, which summons a malevolent spirit into the lives of four friends? Add a setting in Cancun, Mexico among the ancient pyramids and the mysterious spirituality of Mayan culture and you have a novel to keep you up at night. Then double down on tattoos that come to life and forbidden sacrifices to the gods.

Quislings by Poppet will hook you and keep you reading, even when you want to close your eyes to the horror. The characters are well developed with distinct personalities, and the setting takes on such a life that it almost seems like a character as well. As a reader fascinated by Mayan culture, I felt immersed in the terrible beauty of the land and its spirituality, intrigued by the historical content, and awed by a plot that draws connections between the Mayan culture and all of the major religions in the world. Quislings is a combined romance, horror, and historical fiction novel that also takes you on an adventure.

The book starts innocently enough with a game of spirit glass and four friends. Three friends seem to know what it going on but, Usha is new to this and the game takes a dangerous turn.
Usha is a little Catholic Italian girl who, is thrust in too a world of old Gods. She is given a task she doesn't understand and has little time to figure out what it all means.
There is wonderful and insightful amounts of Mayan history and culture wrapped up in this spooking and suspensful read. The story will leave you thinking and your heart soaring.
As with all of Poppets books she has taken time to do her research making her books accurate yet entertaining. Her characters are beautifully written and the plot is well crafted and not something everyone else has done. The romance is written into the stoy and not just an afterthought of the plot. There is believable conflict. Many secrets will be revealed...not only within the characters but within the beliefs of mankind.
This story pulls you in from the moment their fingers touch the spririt glass and doesn't let you go until you read the last words.
This is an excellent read and is as great a work as I have come to associate with all of Poppet's writing.
You will not wanna miss this trip into the world of the God's with these four friends.

After a night on the town, four friends decide to finish their Halloween celebration with a seance. After all, it's just a game, right? The four find out soon enough, that's not so, in this tale that will scare your socks off.

The story is set in beautiful Cancun, Mexico surrounded by turquoise seas, and ancient Mayan temples. The gods are back, and they have a mission for Usha. That's if everyone doesn't die first! This book kept me on the edge of my seat, tantalized all my senses, and brought forth every one of my emotions. And then it brought to life my biggest fear! All I can say is WOW! I loved it. In my opinion this is Poppet's best work so far, and since all of her work is best selling material that says a lot.

Wow. Wow wow wow. I couldn't put down this dark, intricately-woven tale involving the gods, Mayan culture and a sinister, otherworldly force. I always enjoy when a novel can tie in old religious beliefs into a story-line, and keep it relevant and clear to the reader. I found the switching viewpoints to be a bit confusing at first, especially at the start of the novel when it wasn't even clear that the speaker was a woman. When I got used to the first-person viewpoints, though, I was drawn into the story and the characters and found I didn't need paragraphs of introduction to get to know them--that happened naturally with the experience.
Fantastic read.

Another great book by Poppet. In this thriller, a group of friends decided to play a game of Spirit of the Glass, calling on the dead. Be careful who or what you trust in this story, things are not always as they seem. Friends are taken on a journey in Cancun, into the Mayan Temples, among many other places trying to solve this puzzle. This emotional roller coaster ride had me biting my nails, yelling "Holy Crap" at the author and crying at the same time. Enjoy the trip with them, watch out for snakes.

After a night out drinking a group of four friends decide to play Spirit of the Glass and from there on I knew I was in for the ride of my life! This is part horror, part thriller, and I was honestly on edge the whole time reading unsure as to what was going to happen next! Poppet writes with a unique style that keeps you gripped. There was amazing background and information on the Mayan culture that I found truly fascinating. I will admit I read this book during the day, as it was scaring the bejeezers out of me! Prepare to be spooked folks...!

Quislings is just the right mix of suspense and intrigue, written with such a poetic voice that lulled me into the book. Don't be deceived, that lull is captivating and heart pumping and drags you along and like the spells in the book, it hold you to the page until you've read the last words.

Poppet did a brilliant job weaving history, theology, music and prophetic insights into the story in such a way that doesn't slow the action down.

Bravo for another great read!

Not really sure what to say about this book. It took me about 20 % of the book to actually start to understand what was going on. It was quite confusing in the beginning. I really liked all the things you learn about the Mayans and religions in general. It ended a bit too early for my taste but somehow I still really liked it. I had the feeling there would have been enough material for more.
