As the recent anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon landing has shown, the Soviet side of the space race remains very much unknown to those of us in the West even now. Part of why it is the sheer amount of secrecy that surrounded it in its heyday. Helping to pierce the veil is Philip Clark's book published back in 1988. It's an intriguing read for showing just what we knew or thought we knew about what was going on behind the Iron Curtain. Though three decades have passed since it's release, it hasn't dated quite as much as one might think and indeed offers insight into where the program might have gone if the Soviet Union hadn't collapsed in the 1990s. It's also copiously illustrated, further enhancing Clark's work. In fact, the book is almost worth seeking out for the pictures and drawings alone, it's that well illustrated. Not bad for a book that's now thirty years plus years old.
