Control is the game. Money is the prize. Curtis Byrne spent over two decades building a feared and respected monarchy in the drug game. When he's dethroned, he unknowingly passes down the family business to his three kids, Chris, Cane and Citi. The street soldiers aren't ready to take orders from underlings once the king is murdered, however, the Byrne siblings are met with vicious opposition. In a do-or-die mission to prove themselves, Chris takes over as the brains and Cane as the triggerman. As both boys try to man up and adjust to leading the kingdom, their sister, Citi, is out of control and sleeping with the enemy. As the shady facts surrounding their father's murder begin to come out, the brothers are put out of commission, forcing Citi to run the empire her father built. With a new man in her life, a Harlem prince by her side, Citi vows to Guard The Throne by any means necessary. But being queen can be deadly.
Nisa Santiago came bursting onto the literary scene in 2009 with her debut title, Cartier Cartel. The book garnered rave reviews and left her readers wanting more. She followed up with the sequel, Return of the Cartier Cartel – which turned into a national bestseller. The Library Journal declared that Santiago’s sequel, [Return of the Cartier Cartel] “Will keep readers hooked to the last chapter.”
Born and raised in Brooklyn, and now living in Harlem, the author is moving at full speed with her writing endeavors. Coined the Duchess of Hop-Hip lit, Santiago humbly admits, “I’m just grateful to be doing what I love as a career and not just a hobby.”
Her latest novel, Bad Apple – The Baddest Chick is slated for an October 2011 release date. The author emphatically states that her decision to start a new series instead of penning part 3 to Cartier Cartel was a brave one. “My readers love Cartier and they wanted more.” Santiago wants her readers to know that she has so many stories to tell and shows no signs of slowing down. Dirty Money Honey is an anthology with her peers, Erica Hilton and Kim K., Melodrama Publishing’s new trinity of authors.
Nisa Santiago’s GUARD THE THRONE is misleading. I thought between the synopsis and the title that the book would be about a drug kingpin with an empire, or a throne, that he passes on to his children Chris, Cane and Citi who aren’t quite ready for the responsibilities but have to get ready after their father is dethroned in order to stay on top. Instead, this novel is about a drug dealer, not a kingpin, that left behind an almost nonexistent “business” and the kids have to scramble to survive. No throne, therefore no need to guard it. It took some time to get past that disappointment and level of expectation. Beyond that, GUARD THE THRONE is just an okay read. Not good. Not bad. It’s a typical tale that made for a quick read.
I gave this book four stars because I am enjoying the series. Ms. Santiago does not disappoint with the drama nor the grit. However half way through the book I can't help but feel as if I read this book somewhere before but with different characters. There is always a boss bitch, a kingpin, someone who is feared in the streets, someone in jail, and friends that hang on but really on the inside they are jealous and envious. Likewise there are always supporting characters that just fade away in the background, never to be heard of or seen again. Their stories are left hanging in the wind without closure. I was expecting a little more from this book having read several of the books by this author already. I will still continue to read books from this author.
The black Town Car came to a stop in front of Baisley Park Houses in Queens. It was a clear, warm Thursday afternoon in New York with blue skies. It had been a brutal winter, but the trees were starting to turn green again. Citi was ready to make a terrific spring, starting today. It was her sixteenth birthday, and she was overwhelmed with anticipation and excitement. Today would be her special day.
She had left school an hour early to rush home to see what gift her father had ready for her. In Citi's mind, school wasn't that important. She barely went, and on the days she did go, it was only to floss her cream-of-the-crop wardrobe and show off the new jewelry her father had bought for her.

Nosa Santiago did it again. The characters were awesome. Cane, Chris & their sister Citi. Gangsters all the way. Their father murdered and robbed one of his best friends over a woman. His best friend murdered and robbed him (the father, Curtis). Needless to say his children took over the drug empire with the help of their long lost mama and her new kingpin hubby. Hope for a sequel.
I think I read the three books out of order, but it answered a lot of unwanted questions, but all-in-all they were good read, would recommend these 3 books to those that's looking for a good series: South Beach Cartel, Guard The Thron, and Then The South Beach Cartel 2💯🎯💯 GREAT READ 💯🎯💯 Oh Yeah, Maino Was A Grimy MF On Ever Account period.... I knew he could be trusted!!!!!
I enjoyed reading another book by this author. However I hope this isn't the end. I expect that are more people out there wanting revenge against this family.
The title and synopsis of this book is very misleading. There was no throne to guard being that Curtis Byrne was just another drug dealer, not a kingpin at all. Yes he was getting money in the streets, had major respect, and plenty of women. Curtis spoiled his children Citi, Chris, and Cane. After his death they are left on their own, with no money and no business, so they have to survive. If he was a kingpin he would have had some money stashed away for his children at least. They weren't guarding the throne, but they definitely wanted to keep the Byrne name in the streets and they wanted the throne. There wasn't a lot of action and the children didn't seem to have the street smarts that the synopsis led you to believe. Citi is the youngest and she is a party animal, looking for the next man to spoil her like her father did. Chris is the smartest of the bunch, even in the streets. Cane is the arrogant and wild child that is always bringing trouble to your front door. Overall this was an okay read, but very misleading, and at times the children can be very annoying. I will be checking out the sequel to see what happens next. Hopefully the children will have learned a little more after everything they experienced in this book.
I thought I put this review up once, but I can't find it so with a few days removed from this story I am giving my most honest opinion. I thought the book was ok, nothing I will recommend or ever read again. Maybe if the story was edited better. Maybe not even the edit, but just giving more detail and making the story longer would have done the trick. They gave all this detail about how the father put them in the situation but then short changed us on how the family was really going to survive it. The one who betrayed the family came to an easy end, I wanted more back and forth. I guess I wanted more emotion, passion, and feeling from the characters. Citi, yes I know she was young, but she was a dumb hoe. For her father to have been around all her life, she didn't act like he gave her no game at all. Chris was trying to be a stand up, but slipped on addressing his sister then he gets the shit end of the stick. I don't know if Nisa just got tired of writing the story or this is how it was suppose to go. And I can't tell by reading this book if Nisa actually knows anything or any one from the street, it didn't seem authentic, if you know what I mean.
Truly riveting. Good read. After their mother stepped out and allowed their father to raise them, these kids developed the utmost respect for him. When their father was murdered, Chris, Cane & Cita had to use their street knowledge to survive. While Chris &Cita were the brains behind the operation, they had to continuously watch Cane due to his destructive behavior. With no initial help from their mother or fathers friends they set out to continue the legacy Curtis started. Although the main person out to destroy them was the closest to them, they were able to beat the odds and come out on top. In the end, the one person they least expected was there to help them regain the throne.
This book was only ok. It took me forever to finish it, and that is not a good sign. I had really high hopes for it, but somewhere along the lines my interest began to wean. I just put it down and did not feel like picking it back up. I would read a paragraph here, a page there. Until I finally got to the end. I really don't know if the book is as bad as I'm making it seem, or if I'm just upset that it didn't meet my expectations. I love this author as a whole but she could have sone a WAYYYYY better job than this.
Maino was doing too much in this book i liked Curtis he just wore his heart on his sleeve when he should have moved smarter Ashanti how can u have three kids and not be apart of their lives but at the end she came around i don't like that chris got fifteen years he was just trying to provide for his family when his father died
This book was really really good! I like how Citi remembered what her brother Chris said about whoever comes to you with something is the one that can't be trusted. I wish the Ashanti would've started connecting with her kids more in the middle and told them the truth. The ending was good but it felt a little too rushed. Hopefully there is a part two!
I was sitting with my mouth open thru this whole book!! That Maino was a beast! Poor Curtis could not keep his princess from getting tarnished by Maino!!!! At the end I was glad that Citi made peace with her mother! Nisa please tell me it will be a part 2!!!!
This book was so good. I couldn't put it down. I loved how the Byrne family stuck together through thick and thin. I liked all of the characters, the plot twists and the action and adventure.
I was left with a few questions after reading this book. All in all it was an ok read. It had a few week moments...no serious twist..kind of predictable.
I liked this book the story line was good . I hate how Curtis died and his daughter was in a relationship with her fathers killer . & how the good brother got locked up
I like how she have all her books tieing end with each other. keeps you on the edge of ur seat. Can't stop reading till you know what gone happen next.
