If You've a Ready Mind

Rate this book
If You've A Ready Mind is a novel-length (approximately 90,000 words) Harry/Draco AU by Maya that was posted in ten installments on her LiveJournal between December 2005 and July 2006. The story uses a common Harry Potter fanfic trope — sorting a character into a different House — to show how Draco Malfoy might have developed in Ravenclaw instead of Slytherin.

Retired fanfic author aka Maya or Mistful
Maya was an influential fan in the Harry Potter fandom who was active circa 2001-2008. She is the author of at least two dozen fanfics, most of which center on the characters of Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy (but not exclusively as a romantic pairing). All of her fanfiction was taken off the Internet on November 6, 2008.

Underwater Light was her seminal work, posted over the course of three years at the height of Harry Potter fandom activity and concurrently with parts of Cassandra Claire's epic, The Draco Trilogy. Along with Cassie Claire's LeatherPants!Draco, Maya's interpretation of Draco in Underwater Light and her other early works has had a huge influence on his characterization in HP fanfic at large.

this is basically HP 1-7, a sometimes cracky, in other parts serious, 'what if Draco was sorted Ravenclaw' story.
loved Hermione and Anthony as Dracos sidekicks

Sarah's most recent published novel, In Other Lands has a protagonist who I adore, primarily because his dialogue is just as entertaining and laugh out loud funny as Draco is in this specific fic. And while it does have H/D, the ship is almost more of a bonus to the deconstruction and meta regarding HP canon and the hilariousness that is young Draco Malfoy and his coming into his own through the years.

It's a brilliant piece of writing that has stuck with me. It's also a genuinely good example of the transformative nature of fanfic. Will always recommend.
