Before you read any of my stuff, get in touch with me for a newer copy. I've updated almost every book since my first exuberant days of Self-Publishing.
When you have a homicide detective, Paige Burner, who does her best investigating when she is high on weed and a crazy PHD, Jean Simons, you get a story that has surprise after surprise. I would say that you should be 18+ due to some adult situations. But Mr Chrisitie is a fantastic new Indy author and is on the road to a fantastic career.
This book is deep and detailed. Disclaimer - explicit sex scenes and drug use. I guess that is a hallmark of Jason Z. Christie!
Recommendation - After confusing the s*** out of us with Tenet, Christopher Nolan needs to redeem himself by making a movie based on this book. It is full of theories that has a lot of potential. I would recommend this to readers that enjoy stories which develop slowly. Also, to the ones who enjoy science fiction and or, criminal investigation.
The Storyline - It is abundantly parallel to the current situation. I mean the pandemic. The main protagonist of this story is Paige Burner. She is a detective, and a good one at that. Extremely intelligent with her approach, complimenting her outer allure. Then there is this character Jean Simons. A brainy guy with a destructive side. I wish all intelligent people had Jean's inclination! He is a genetic researcher in Alabama also a PhD candidate. His love interest is a woman of color, Maxine Jackson. They have a beautiful thing going on on the side. She is a fitting partner to genius Jean. She is herself adept in the world of computer programming and psychedelics! All three characters enjoy getting high to clear their minds.
The story is hard hitting slow burn. Be patient as the author flexes his imaginative power in the world of genetics, spirituality, and criminal investigation. He dives deep in every scene, giving a lot of details needed to develop his characters. The reveal towards the end is dawning. The chemistry between Maxine and Jean was great, but it could not trump what Maxine and Paige came to uncover about each other! And then there was an undeniable attraction between Jean and Paige. My romantic side felt that the trio should move-in together and live happily ever after!
There were many interesting theories on the creation of this universe, human perceptions, and how genetics fits into all this. Although a fiction it will intrigue you intellectually. I want to write more, but I don't want to spoil it for anyone! Just pick it up and flow at the writers pace. You will enjoy the ride I am sure of it!
I gave it a four star as it took me a really long time to finish this one. Almost a week! I was very thorough so as to not miss anything important. And that meant I had to re-read many pages just to get into the head of the author himself! I am into romantic genre primarily, so I kept waiting for something to spark between Jean and Paige. But it was not until the very tail end that I got my fill for the romance side of things. I was patient... and it paid off!
Pageburner switches between the lives of Page Burner, an intelligent (though drug using) homicide detective, and Jean Simons, Genetic PHD and mentally deranged man.
I struggled with how to review this book as it is an excellently written, complex journey through the questions of morality, bio-warfare, and drug use. I have serious issues with the extent and derangements of the drug usage and the illness (mental and bio) that it brings. In the end I think Jean, Paige and Maxxy make a great unit but fear for the world they inhabit!
I had a lot of trouble liking either of the main characters because of their part in the mass murder but… and this is a big one, the story is engaging and you find yourself page after page, riveted, waiting to find out what happens next. I loved it!
Jason is a crazy, thoughtful new Indy author that shows a unique perception and application of morality in his constructed world. I give PageBurner 3 1/2 stars only because of the blasé attitude of drug use (yes it’s a personal bias but heh). Over all the story is a 4 for enjoyment and writing. I loved the story and look forward to reading more from him in the future and happily recommend this to any that love a psychological mystery as it definitely makes the lines blur and the brain twitch.
Wow, what a ride! Jason's novel takes you across the States through many mind-blowing topics. Not for the feint of heart, Pageburner goes into graphic detail about drugs, sex and the human genome. Does this sound like an odd eclectic mix to you? Believe it or not, but these three topics are actually spun together perfectly! I must admit, science and I are not the best of friends so quite a bit of the ruminations by Jean about DNA and genomes was completely over my head. However, I trundled forth just knowing it would all be explained in the end.
I loved Paige Burner, the detective. How could one humongous drug addict (not that she'd agree to that label) be such a super genius at solving cases? Easy! This hottie knew just how much pot would send her into case-solving mood and it worked every time. Everyone falls in love with Paige including me. She eats orgasmic food like there's no tomorrow, gets high as a kite (not that that's my thing) as often as possible, and is the biggest horndog on the planet! What's not to love?
This was an ingenious story full of surprises around every corner. Definitely an 18+ read, as there are tons of adult-only situations. If you are a bit of a prude where sex scenes are involved, I'd give this one a miss. Or at least not read it on the subway :)
Ah, Pageburner. I probably feel better about my first novel than most people do about theirs. I wrote it in jail, 400 hand-written pages in 30 days. I got the initial idea from an urban legend someone told me about a woman and a lobster...
Then I started a short story called 'Fascist Jean', and the two stories eventually coalesced. It never could have gotten traditionally published without a lot of revisions that I didn't necessarily want to make. Bad Brains, a D.C. hardcore band, are in the book, and I doubt it would be easy to get their permission. Publishers hate stuff like that, I hear.
I do wish I had fleshed out her background a bit more. But Paige is not about where she came from. She's about now, and where she goes from here. I hope to write a sequel in the next few years. There's a critical sentence, sort of a throwaway line at the time, that is never resolved.
"They made love for the first and last time."
