Gene Collier only wants what he doesn't have, so after a disappointing football season he leaves the university and joins the Army, shipping out to Korea. There he becomes a prison guard whistle blower, which gets him sent to the battlefield. There he is captured and sent to a POW camp for brainwashing which takes. Going to China when the war ends, he and his teacher Gao, fall in love with the same woman, so Gene decides to come back to America. But the sixties in America is a very different place, his home has disappeared under a strip mine, his people are dispersed; and Gene's quest for what he doesn't have goes on.
