Set on the River Planet, this fantasy has an underlying message about the use and abuse of creation and humanity. Johin takes on a quest set by the charismatic stranger, Manny, whose claims about the importance of the River of Life are not believed by all his hearers.
Magic in the Pool of Making is a MG book as opposed to young adult, like her Star Dancer series - so don't get confused! Older children might feel bemused or patronised, although I enjoyed it thoroughly and I'm past both those age groups!
Although this was published a while ago, the themes still firmly resonate. And there are multiple themes, which completely disproves the stupid theory that books should resonate with one 'issue.' In Magic in the Pool of Making, both race and the environment are touched on, as well as more 'mundane' ones, such as growing into yourself and having to choose the right, rather than easy, path.
The central protagonists are Johin and Manny, set with clearing the the source of the River that over the years people have abused and the planet is now so polluted that existence is perilous. Both are believable characters; Johin is very age appropriate, and Johin is delightfully mysterious. He actually reminds me a little of The Little Prince, which has to be a good thing!
In a way the tale is an allegory, but it doesn't matter because the story is so riveting.
