Sophie writes letters to her father, who is away at sea, working on a freighter. She tells him all about what is happening to the family: "Some men from the music shop brought back the old piano today. They have mended it. Mummy is very pleased." The seasons pass for Sophie while her father endures the humid weather of the Pacific: her snowman contrasts particularly well with the sampans passing behind him!

A tender observation of the passing of time for a family that long to be together. Philippe Duoasquier's artwork draws you in and encourages questions.
I came across this in a 2nd grade classroom. I can imagine it being used in a lesson about seasons, geography (especially the size of the world), reading the pictures, maybe about how we get products from the other side of the world, certainly about missing people we love.
