Hope's Reign by Selina Fenech is the second book I've read by this author. The first, of course, being the predecessor of this book titled Memory's Wake.
There are some neat things I liked about these two books. One was the fact that the author is also an artis,t so she combined her two talents. Both books have hand drawn illustrations included throughout.
This is actually the first time I've seen something like this, and I wasn't quite sure if I like it at first but it slowly grew on me. They gave me the ability to gain a better visual on the characters and they are just plain beautiful drawings. It's art I can appreciate.
Now, let's talk about the actual books. I will try to keep it as vague as possible and not give out too many spoilers but it's harder when talking about the second book in a series.
The series starts off with one of the main characters, Memory, colliding with the second main character, Eloryn, as she is fleeing for her life. Memory has pretty much appeared out of nowhere with no memories or sense of who she is.
Right away the book starts off with action as the pair tries to escape those who are after them. We find out a little later that the current king has been looking for Eloryn ever since he killed her parents.
Soon after they shake the men after them, we meet the other two main characters in the series: Will, a wildling who seems to recognize Memory, and Roen, the seventh son of a duke, turned thief.
The story progresses through all four POV's which can get tricky. Sometimes it can get distracting jumping from person to person but Fenech did a good job with it. It mostly stays in Memory's POV with the other three popping in every so often.
The main objective in Memory's Wake is to figure out what happened with Memory's memories, find Eloryn's guardian and take on the evil king in the process.
In Hope's Reign the story revolves more around the memories that have yet to surface. We find out that Will knows most of Memory's life story because they were in a group home together before the events of the first book took place.
From him we see that Memory's life wasn't a fairy tale and that some bad things have happened.
Which begs the question: what if the memories she so desperately searches for are worse than she ever imagined.
The second book takes a little bit of a darker turn as some of her memories start to surface and she deals with jealousy, anger and feeling abandoned. Her grip on reality starts to slip a little and she feels like she's going crazy.
What I really like about the two stories is the mix of our modern world with the mystical and magical world Memory find herself in. Memory speaks with slang that familiar to us today while everyone else is usually confused by what she's saying. I thought that was an entertaining piece in the story.
The stories are well written even though at times I did get annoyed with the two girls. Mostly, they're just a little too much of the angsty teenager for me. Then I remind myself that I was no better at that age.
Memory's Wake and Hope's Reign are two great fantasy, YA books with a dash of romance and magic weaved into it.
This will definitely be a re-read for me.

I read Hope's Reign straight after book 1, and I'm glad to say it only gets better!
One of the flaws in Memory's Wake, in my opinion, was that the characters were not given much room to develop. In Hope's Reign, they finally have that space. We also learn more about the world and its relationship to ours, and we experience more of the fae.
But I feel the blurb doesn't do this book justice. More than Memory slipping away from her friends, it's her struggle to fit in that is interesting, her attempts to have an impact on the world and her battle against antiquated views on the place of women in society - I particularly enjoyed the feminism in this book!
It's the political plots and deceits and attempts by various people to manipulate the girls that make this book really gripping.
On this point I just want to say a few words about things being predictable. If by predictable you mean that you know how it's going to end, and what the events will be, no, this book is not predictable. It keeps you guessing about what is going to happen (and what crazy thing Memory is going to think of next). But yes, I did guess who the baddies were, and I think that's a good thing. The clues are deliberate, but because the characters are more or less oblivious to it, it means you worry for them (it's that 'No, don't do that!' moment). It think that's quite a clever and subtle way of handling the plot, and it definitely contributed to my enjoyment of it. Although it also made me very annoyed at Eloryn at times. You silly girl! Can you sense the emotional involvement here?
What I find interesting is that, although set in the same world and with the same characters, it's a completely different kind of book to Memory's Wake. Whereas the first one was a chase, this one is more of a political thriller. I can't wait to find out what Selina has in store for us in book 3!

I’ve been following Selina’s career for over a decade now and I can assure you that she never disappoints. This is a rare YA series that will appeal to readers of all ages… and the beautiful illustrations won’t hurt either!
It's true that the plot was somewhat predictable but the action kicked off on page one and will keep you turning pages until the end. The characters are real and relatable and the setting is so vivid that I could see it all happening in my mind’s eye. I came to care for Eloryn, Roen, and Will deeply but my heart absolutely broke for Memory once she remembered everything she’d been through in her previous life. They’re all deserving of a HEA but I think it’s Memory who needs one the most. There are still unanswered questions and an even more dangerous threat to the Kingdom to be unmasked so I’m excited to see what Providence Unveiled brings.
If you haven’t read Memory’s Wake yet, I’m encouraging you to start there and I promise that you’ll be back for Hope’s Reign immediately after. It’s an unforgettable story that will touch your heart.

Hope’s Reign is the whimsical and adventure filled second instalment in Selina Fenech’s Memory’s Wake Trilogy and is a fantastic follow up to the first novel, further developing the storyline and delighting once more.
After the events of the first book, Memory found herself hoping that life in Avall would be a breeze, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. Despite everything they went through, the bond between Memory, Eloryn, Roen and Will seems to be falling apart and with Eloryn and Memory expected to take on their roles as heirs to the throne, Memory sets out to learn about her kingdom. Yet as Eloryn struggles with the duties expected of her it seems like Memory’s past is haunting her and with those closest to Memory not necessarily able to be trusted, soon Memory finds herself needing to discover who she can rely on before it's too late.
Having enjoyed Memory’s Wake immensely, I jumped straight into Hope’s Reign as soon as I finished its predecessor and was thoroughly entranced yet again. Picking up not long after the last novel left off, Memory and Lory are trying to assimilate to their new roles as Princesses and are beginning to get to know each other now they know they are sisters, allowing us as readers to discover the next step in their journey.
Selina Fenech continues to beautifully detail the story with Hope’s Reign told through the same various POV’s the last book was. Memory’s Eloryn’s, Roens and Will’s voices allow for another well rounded tale. Whimsical and lyrical, Hope’s Reign is a luscious fantasy tale full of character development, action and romance.
I really love all the characters and enjoy seeing them all interact. I love this fantasy world of magic and fae and royalty that author Selina Fenech has created and enjoy following Memory, Lory and Roen throughout the story. They’re such a great friends and have a wonderful closeness. And of course the romance between Eloryn and Roen doesn’t hurt and constantly has me eagerly reading along, ready to see them get together.
Sweet at times, exciting and highly entertaining, Hope’s Reign was a lovely sequel and another great instalment in this beautiful fantasy series. Can’t wait to see how Selina Fenech plans to end the series after the game changer of an ending that features in Hope’s Reign!

Hope's Reign got off to a really slow start. Between not remembering a lot of important details and jarring transitions, I was confused for a while. And I almost gave up. Boy am I glad I clung to the really interesting pieces and kept going past my usual quit point (20%)! Because at about 35% things started getting really interesting and by 60% I couldn't put it down.
I think my favorite thing was this unique world - though it was also the most confusing. Most of the world development happens in Memory's point of view, and she's as clueless as I am, so were blundering around together trying to figure out this strange world together. I figured it out for the most part, though, and it's freaking cool!
Then there's the characters. When Hope's Reign started, Memory got on my nerves. She was so mopey! But as the story developed I grew to love her again. Yes she was still mopey, but for good reason. For a good portion I felt like she was the only one who was really doing anything a ruler should and with a clue! Eloryn was blinded by duty and pressure and I just wanted to smack her so she'd wake up! Oh and this one character just made by blood boil - I wont name him so I don't spoil things for you - but he made me angrier and angrier!
Oh and I can't forget the pictures! They're gorgeous, even in the eBook. I stop and stare at them, soaking in the details and making predictions. I own the first book and paperback and intend to own all three, just so I can look at the gorgeous art work.
The last 15% of Hope's Reign was pretty non-stop and things got really exciting. I'm going to make a point to pick up the next book really soon so I don't forget things again. Maybe it won't take me as long to get into the story that way!

The second book sucked my right back in (even though I left some time between reading the first and following up, but I bought the trilogy immediately, knowing I wanted to get back to the story). Mem is so relatable, how she feels she doesn't fit in anywhere, nobody could ever love her for herself, everybody near her is only out to get something from her or just not interested at all... and she struggles so hard in this new and unusual world, without her memories, her friends drifting farther and farther apart from her, which she forces even more because of her insecurities.
Meanwhile there is a thread on the kingdom and it's getting more and more dangerous... Nailbitingly thrilling and though you see it coming somehow you still hope it won't come to this.
I enjoyed this book and I will definitely read on!

Hope's Reign was not as good as Memory's Wake. It felt very much like a mid-section of the story. There wasn't a lot of action but there was a lot of character development. Memory and Eloryn are doing their very best to cope with the radical change of situation they are facing. Eloryn copes by caving in and Memory by rebelling. Many mistakes are made. I enjoyed continuing the journey with these characters but chaffed a lot at the slow pace.

So I super loved the first book so much that I bought the boxed set with the cool illustrations, but halfway through this second novel, I was so bored that I stopped reading for over 6 months. I can’t even really remember the first half, but I plowed my way through the second half because I hate unfinished books on my Kindle.
I started getting eager to know what would happen with all the relationships. I am happy about the ending. It was exciting, and it seems everything wrapped up nicely. Just wish I could boot Mina away and push Will and Memory together.
Loved the illustrations! I might take another break before getting into the third novel in the boxed set. Not sure that this world draws my as much as it did in the first novel. Still excellent world building. I do like the dynamics of this world. I am also glad that Eloryn got some balls at the end of the novel. I hated her being a pushover.

I like the fact that there were twists in this book. It often left me frustrated with Eloryn for being so frustratingly blind about how manipulative Hayes was being.
I loved guessing what was actually happening before it was clarified in the text. I could see right through Hayes from the beginning which is why I was frustrated that Eloryn couldn't. It was a good choice of her to allow Memory to lead instead. It is much more suited to be a leader.
I was in two minds as to weather "Hope" was Mina messing about because she is jealous of Memory or Providence coming back to finish off what she had started.
Things got really good when Eloryn finally destroyed Hayes. Her weak personality was getting on my nerves by that point.
It will be exciting to see how Memory leads. I think she will be a great leader.
Also, I really want to know more about Erec. He seems kind of cool.

Absolutely amazing! I'm so in love with this story, that I could scream with excitement whenever someone mentions its' title to me! Highly recommend.

My Review:
This book is hard to review only because I originally decided it would be a DNF but I was at 57% and since I was reading it with a friend and she told me it got better I should try again, I did. However my view wasn’t any different when I continued. Let me explain, I LOVED the first book so much that I got a picture of the last illustration that is in the book hanging on my wall. The author is a wonderful illustrator as well as telling an interesting story but somehow I just wasn’t feeling this book, I was totally heartbroken. The characters just weren’t evolving like I wanted and at times I was so frustrated with how the story was going that it was a bit predictable. Everyone was just so mean to each other and I just wasn’t understand the flow of the story by the time I did finish it I still had questions and it had a bit of a cliff hanger. It was very slow in the beginning and at one point I just kind of gave up on it all. The last 20% was interesting and the illustrations were phenomenal but it didn’t save the story for me.
The story leaves off about were the last one ended but it threw in a bunch of stuff that I wasn’t sure needed to be in the book because once I got closer to the end I realized most of it didn’t really matter at least to me and most was unresolved. I was hoping for more of progress and I felt we are still in the same place the 1st left off. I really do love the characters but the frustration of them was overwhelming and I just didn’t understand why I still have as many questions as I did after the first book.

I would like to thank Selina Fenech, author of Hope's Reign, for giving me this wonderful opportunity of reading and reviewing this fabulous book.
I loved this book way more than I loved Memory's Wake and hats off to Selina for thinking this whole story out and then executing it in words and let me tell you she has a remarkable writing skill and her writing style is awesome as well just like her art work and in this sequel she didn't disappoint her readers at all.
I loved to see the characters whom I loved in book 1 to develop and progress in this sequel and if you loved book 1 then you are ought to love book 2 as well because unlike other trilogy this sequel surpassed book 1 in awesomeness.
I loved Memory and the world building as usual is appreciable and I totally got sucked in from the very first and I didn't felt bored for even a nano second. The mystery and suspense is really great and it spiced up the story as well taking my interest level up a notch.
The romance part is really cute and the essence of pure love was present in this story. The emotional whirlwind through which the characters went through really touched the readers as well and the betrayal, loneliness, despair, confusion, unexpected twists and turns added more colors to the story.
I loved the side characters as well and would definitely like to recommend it to ya all and hope that I get the chance of reviewing the 3rd book as well.

I loved this book way more than I loved Memory's Wake and hats off to Selina for thinking this whole story out and then executing it in words and let me tell you she has a remarkable writing skill and her writing style is awesome as well just like her art work and in this sequel she didn't disappoint her readers at all.
I loved to see the characters whom I loved in book 1 to develop and progress in this sequel and if you loved book 1 then you are ought to love book 2 as well because unlike other trilogy this sequel surpassed book 1 in awesomeness.
I loved Memory and the world building as usual is appreciable and I totally got sucked in from the very first and I didn't felt bored for even a nano second. The mystery and suspense is really great and it spiced up the story as well taking my interest level up a notch.

The illustrations in this book were amazing. I find myself looking forward to them and seeing how the author envisions her characters. Sometimes I find myself looking at thses illustrations more than once setting this book different from others. I've read many great reviews about this book but I can't say I agree with it. I though Eloryn's actions very naive and completely aggravating. I saw through it that Hayes is power hungry and Eloryn's gives him too much authority. She has not grown queen like and her complacency really bothered me. I though she needed to step up and take matters into her own hands instead of letting others do the work for her. She does not see that the more she gives him control and the more she loses her power. As for Memory I completely love her. She is a great character who has suffered much but she still retains her compassion and understanding to help others. I'm fond of the way she manages to bring humor to the book. I really enjoy her as the lead character.

This is the second novel in the series about a girl named Mem who has lost much of her memory. She ends up being a princess and living in a castle, something which is boring her terribly. She lives in Avalon which is called Avall. Thayl, the really evil guy, has a fall from power.
Mem's sort of alter-ego, Hope, appears and gives her some rather bad advice all the time. Will is also in the story being his usual enigmatic self. Hayes, the would-be ruler of all that is continues his tactics, planning to marry Eloryn and take over the kingdom.
What he doesn't count on is that Eloryn manages to grow up and smell the garbage bin and draws her own line in the sand. Mem spends a lot of time ducking out of the classes she is expected to take in etiquette, unwilling to accept the rather backward way that the kingdom regards women.
It all comes together quite well to make a rather exciting story.

Wow!! Selina Fenech did another amazing job of continuing the Memory's Wake Trilogy. Hope's Reign is wonderfully written and beautifully illustrated!! Her art is as haunting as her writing!
Memory/Hope struggles to find her place as a Princess and learn about magic and her new world in Avall as some of her stolen memories start to return. Elory struggles to deal with all the responsibilities of being Queen and learning who she can trust. As the girls try to deal with all the pressures they struggle to keep their new relationship strong along with their friendships with Roen and Will.
I can't wait for the conclusion of this story!!!

I won't hide that I'm a fan of Selina. I loved Memory's Wake, and this is no different.
I have a hard time writing reviews without spoilers, and because I haven't visited here in a while, it's been a while since I've read this book! Oops!
I will say this was a fantastic tale. It took me away, made me feel wonderful and left me with excitement for the next installment.

Here's another 2nd book that was painful to read. It even had an "Iago" type character that tried to pour negativity into Memory. Ironically, she called herself "Hope" and said she was part of Memory. Eloryn gets manipulated by the head of the wizard counsel to the point that he is running everything. Will spends most of his time with Mina, the evil fairy. There is some resolution in the ending, and that's what saved me from hating it and tossing it out the window.

While the first book was good, this was awesome! The story was more engaging. I liked how the first book layed the foundation for the romance and this one we actually saw it. Since moment one of Will saying Memory is "Her" I shipped them. So I'm super happy they are finally together. The build up was really good.

e second book in the Memory's Wake trilogy. We continue the story of Eloryn's coronation and Memory's journey through Avall. Twists and turns and a broken soul later, we come to a rather interesting end. Will Eloryn lose all for her love of Roen? you will just have to wait and see.

OMG - love it. Another wonderful chapter in the Memory's Wake Trilogy - watching the characters grow and learn more about them selves and the world around them. Can't wait for the next and final chapter in this journey

Ok so I loved this book better than the first because we can see how much Memory grows as a character. There is excellent character development with all the characters, and the illustrations only get better too. I cannot wait to read the third book!

Mystery mayhem what more could I ask for

I struggled with this book.. TO PUT IT DOWN!
I had an audio book again like the first. I just loved it, packed with adventure and all kinds of emotions!
I love Selina fenechs artwork and now I also love her writing!
