How can you not give a five-star review to a book written by your grandmother? That said, I found myself wanting to re-read "Back of the Front" as I watch "Downton Abbey." My grandmother died long before I was born, so this book offers a tangible way to know something about her through the letters she wrote to her parents back home. It was a gutsy thing she did, to take off for Europe during World War I. She developed a skill for changing flat tires and repairing Lizzie, the car she drove from hospital to hospital delivering supplies and gifts from America to wounded soldiers. I have a feeling she saw more suffering than she wanted to let on, perhaps because a certain reserve was the way people handled emotions back then. But her feelings do come through. ! Toward the end of the book, she writes: "I am so utterly sick from the War! It is a rotten business from beginning to end ...the darkness is so black just now that many people have forgotten that the light exists."
