Ex-gunslinger Jude Morgan lands in jail in a far-flung West Texas town. On the fourth day, the sheriff ushers in a beautiful woman dressed in men’s pants and toting her own six-shooter. Adriana Jones claims he is her worthless husband who married her, but never came home.
The young woman makes a bargain with Jude in front of the sheriff. Jude is to come home where he belongs, and she will have him released. Once they’re alone, she explains his job is to pose as her husband to thwart the marriage advances of her neighbor, wealthy rancher Horace Caruthers. The older man wants her ranch to join with his; the Pecos River runs through her property.
To seal the bargain, Jude wants a kiss. During the next few weeks, however, Jude and Addie learn that the kiss meant more than they intended. Then, when Addie's life is in danger, will Jude rescue his Addie? Or will Addie save herself and her gunslinger?
Yeary hits the mark with "Addie and the Gunslinger." When Addie's ranch is threatened, she goes out and gets her a husband in the guise of Jude Morgan, gunslinger. But has Jude given up his Colts?
Set in historical Texas, Addie's neighbor, Cartherers threatens to dam up the river if he can't marry her and gain access to her land. Addie seeks out Jude to pose as her husband. After playing their parts with a kiss or two, Addie questions the wisdom of asking Jude to pose as her husband. Can Jude help Addie save her land or will he walk away?
Yeary intrigues the reader right from the start when Addie saunters into the jail looking for a husband and finds Jude. The plot moves well and it's easy to picture the old west setting. The characters are interesting. Addie needs a little refinement and Jude's looking for something better in his life, but can he find it on Addie's ranch? The love story is "sweet" with a couple of kisses and tender caresses. Addie and the Gunslinger has just the right balance of old west, romance, action, adventure, and intrigue. A very heartwarming read.
I enjoy the short story/novella. While wonderful for the reader who likes to finish in one sitting, they do not always have characters who the reader can see in their mind. This author does not have that problem with this story. You see and know the characters quickly, with those few well chosen words. An added bonus is the mystery surrounding each and every character. While the author has the kind of story that could easily be made longer, it works at this length quit nicely.
Ooooohhh!!! Jude (swoon -- love that name!!) and Addie deliver an adorable little tale of a man looking for something different out of life and a woman who needs a man to help save her home. Love how they meet and watching the initial sparks flare and grow into something more.
There were a couple of surprising twists to go with the drama, making this quick sweet story lighthearted with just enough excitement to keep your attention.
ADDIE AND THE GUNSLINGER by Celia Yeary is a wonderful western novella. Addie is a strong, capable heroine struggling to save her family ranch. Jude is an ex gun for hire who's found himself in a difficult situation. When Addie claims he's her husband and gets him out of jail, he's intrigued by both her and her proposal.
Ms Yeary re-creates the western world in lovely detail and she manages to do so without using graphic sex, language or violence. The hero and heroine as well as the secondary characters and villains are well-drawn, believable people. ADDIE AND THE GUNSLINGER is a treat for all readers of western romance.
Celia Yeary's ADDIE AND THE GUNSLINGER really held my attention. This charming western novella is about two people who desperately need a second chance. I read the entire book in one sitting. Now I'm ready for another western from Yeary.
Sweet short western. Starts off with a woman picking a husband from goal. Basic elements of a good western - gunslinger, covetous neighbour, shootout, damsel with spirit.
