A biography of Pocahontas that highlights some important events as she helped to bring about peace and friendship between English settlers in Virginia and the native Powhatan people.
During the past years, the legendary figure and peacemaker, Pocahontas, has been fictionalized beyond her true recognition. In a simplified way this book brings forth the sometimes forgotten, but very interesting facts of the real Pocahontas that so many people view as the Disney character. This book is designed for around the second grade level and incorporates beautiful paintings and drawings of the Native American Princess and her Indian life. This book shows the readers how important this historical figure was for Native Americans and settlers in Jamestown. This is a very inspiring book that will engage its readers.
Pocahontas, by Lucia Raatma, tells the true story about Pocahontas. This is a multicultural literature book because it gives a look into the Native American culture. It tells about her life as a Native American, her father being a great Indian chief, what happened when the men from England came to America, the true story of her relationships with John Smith and John Rolfe, and her journey to England, where she died. I could use this book for a social studies lesson on Colonial America. I could have the students compare and contrast the Disney Movie, Pocahontas, to the real story of her life. The reading level of this book is 3.1.
