Young Philotas, the King's son, got caught during his first battle in war and is now held hostage by the opposing King. Philotas considers his situation dire and shameful, and when offered a chance to rescue himself and to return to his father he opts for another "solution".

This young man Philotas must be one of the most stupid characters ever. I wonder if Lessing intended him to look that way.
