I didn’t choose this book and while my 6th grader loved this book,I on the other hand I didn’t. I don’t know why the Author wanted to make this man so likable. He owned people, he raped a child and that child had his children. He kept them all in bondage. I was able to use this book as a teaching moment to show my child how this book whitewashed Jefferson. I was able to teach her about the real Jefferson. Why this author makes it seem like there was a real relationship when Sally was a child and slave. Slaves weren’t considered people so they don’t have any autonomy over her body she could never say no to him.
