I read this book out loud to my 8 year old and it was a wonderful experience. The main character (Peter Paul) is impulsive, sarcastic, relatable, and above all, funny. We giggled our way all through this book.
Some might find Peter Paul a bit too irreverent for a children's book but I think it's important for kids to have flawed characters in their literature, just as adults do. We adults don't like reading books about perfect people, so why should our children? My 8 year old begged me to read it to her in the morning before school, in the afternoons before dinner, and snuggled up before bedtime.
This book had just the right amount of spiritual content without making it tedious or didactic. And it was spiritual content accessible to children.
In the end, when I read the last chapter my child looked at me and gave the greatest compliment a book can receive. She said, "Is that the end? I want more!"

This. book. is. hilarious! The Day the School Blew Up is one of the funniest books I think I have ever read! It was really the perfect balance between funny and serious, but the funny parts were the best, really!
Although this book is geared more towards younger readers, this book can be enjoyable for all ages! I read this book on a road trip once and people were staring at me because I was laughing out loud! (And I only laugh out loud while reading if it is REALY funny!) I mean, just look at that cover!
This book is short enough to finish in only couple hours...
Peter Paul Pappenfuss and his friend get into so much trouble, but they were by far, my favorite characters! XD
If you want a funny, refreshing, change from the typical books you read, and you want to laugh, I totally recommend this book to you! I would also recommend the second book, Camporee of Doom, its's just as good!!

After nonchalantly answering questions on a test Peter Paul Pappenfuss discovers to his surprise, and others that he is to represent Davenport Christian Academy in an academic bowl with the first prize being $10,000. The pressure really builds when the boiler at the school blows up, and everyone is counting on Peter to win the contest, and the prize money.

August 10, 2011I bought this book for my 13-year-old son, but purloined it from him so I could read it first. I absolutely loved it.
It's rare that I read a book and laugh all the way through it. This book is hilarious...Seth Pierce is a comic genius. Even the chapter titles are amusing.
The characters are off-beat and bursting with personality - obviously caricatures of some of the most common personality types found in the average church. The main character, Peter Paul Pappenfuss, is lovable despite his cringe-worthy antics, and his unconventional, white-knuckled adventures through the fifth grade serve to remind us how God works with us where we are instead of where we "should" be.
The book is fiction, but the truths the kids discover about God are real. I recommend it for its entertainment value as well as its "non-preachy" Spiritual value. While it's intended for kids, adults will enjoy it, too. These pages are full of reasons to cringe, empathize, laugh and be thankful that God isn't finished with us yet.

I read this book with my 7-yr-old, and we both enjoyed it very much. Plenty of funny, and also does well with presenting real-world, applicable themes. It was fun to read together, and we may do it again as a family in a few years. It is not a devotional, it IS a fun book for kids.
