Richard Hefter met children's author Jacquelyn Reinach in 1975. He was contracted at the time to write 26 books for the publishers Holt. After the contract expired he formed a publishing venture, Euphrosyne, with Reinach.
He is known as the creator of Stickybear and as the co-creator (with Reinach) and illustrator for the Sweet Pickles[1] library of books, and for the Strawberry Library of First Learning. The Sweet Pickles series went on to sell 40 million copies. Hefter described his aim as "trying to help children understand things like shyness, laziness and embarrassment in a humorous way."
Turtle can throw a huge tantrum. She is the Drama Queen of the Sweet Pickles world. Everyone gathered around her to talk her down off her ledge. They began to throw their own tantrum to show how ridiculous this was. It worked.
I know someone who did this in real life. She was in the grocery store with her son and he started throwing a tantrum on the floor. The mom said, “This is what you look like.” She got down in the middle of the store and did the same thing. The son stopped right then and my friend paid and left the store. It’s a great story.
I am enjoying the Sweet Pickles world. The kids are loving them too. I have found some silly voices for a few of the characters and they want more. I will be exploring them more.
Turtle Throws a Tantrum by Richard Hefter is about Turtle who really wants the bird's bracelet. The bird will not let turtle wear the bracelet, so turtle starts to throw a tantrum and causes a ruckus around town. Soon turtle realizes how annoying it is to watch tantrums so he stops. This book teaches about sharing and not getting your way. I would definitely read this book because it was super annoying to read Turtle's reaction, and I hope it would annoy the kids in the hope they won't have any tantrums...Even though they probably will.
Vain Vulture brags to Turtle about his new bracelet and naturally, Turtle wants to try it on. Vulture refuses, which while not super nice, is totally within his rights. Turtle starts throwing a royal tantrum, an overwhelming tantrum way out of proportion for the circumstances. Passersby wonder what the heck is going on. They want to help so they get together and decide to show him just how ridiculous he looks.
The sweet pickles series brings back such fond memories of both my childhood and my son's ! I remember looking for each volume at the library, poring over the front and back matter (list of the residents & map of the village) also reading this one in particular to my son and doing the voices. I love Vain Vulture's 70s look, pimp threads and gold chains, but the other characters look more generic (in a good way).
