Somewhere 'twixt' the equally demanding responsibilities of creating children's literature and running over elderly pedestrians, Berkeley Breathed has found time to create his Sunday 'Outland' funnies featuring the venerable Opus and Bill, which explains this valuable second collection of said works. Enjoy.
Guy Berkeley "Berke" Breathed is an American cartoonist, children's book author/illustrator, director, and screenwriter, best known for Bloom County, a 1980s cartoon-comic strip which dealt with socio-political issues as seen through the eyes of highly exaggerated characters (e.g. Bill the Cat and Opus the Penguin) and humorous analogies.
Still as fun as ever! While BB's comics often refer to political situations, the references are skewed just enough that they could be about today's scandals as much as about the ones from 25 years ago. When they were discussing issues related to a US presidential election, I had trouble for a while figuring out which one they were discussing. The same issues re-occur perennially in slightly different forms.
This collection includes a famous strip that was used as an excuse to have Outland ousted from many newspapers.
"Men should pause for one moment and take another long hard look at the very thing that brings meaning to their meaningless lives."
I read these comics when I was a teen and they were "printed" in a "newspaper" which was "delivered" to our home. Some of the political humor is weirdly relevant to today's shenanigans, which goes to show some things never change. Some of the misogynistic humor didn't age well for me. Mostly just a nostalgia experience.
Excellent collection of daily newspaper cartoons about a penguin (Opus) and his friends trying to adjust to the changing mores and the political climate of the mid-1990’s.
I am a huge fan of Berkley Breathed and Bill the Cat. If you are, too, then you should, at the very least, read this book...but you really should own it.
