A reissue of an irresistible classic by a much-loved author.
Flossie is a London cat. Her hobbies are bird-watching, fishing, climbing and gardening. In the house she helps with knitting, making the beds and polishing shoes. But her favourite occupation is sleeping.
Born in 1941, Ruth Brown is the creator of some of Britain's best loved children's books. She has created a great many picture books for Andersen Press and is highly respected as an author and illustrator. She attended Bournemouth College of Art, 1957–59; Birmingham College of Art, degree (with first-class honors), 1961; Royal College of Art, M.A., 1964. She is married to artist Ken Brown and they have two grown-up sons and one grandchild.
How could I not have found Ruth Brown before this? After reading A Dark, dark tale, I fell in love with it, and hoped I'd find some more "dark" stories in the Ruth Brown collection. While this isn't dark in any way, it IS, however, a wonderful story with some unusual and completely unique aspects to it. The story is adorable, the illustrations are so detailed! My 3 yr old twins liked the pictures. My 5 yr old also loved the book. Just an overall fun book that's a great addition to any children's collection. I can't wait to read more Ruth Brown!
I've lived with dogs for over 20 years, but I miss living with cats. I can't have cats now, since my two pit bull mixes are confirmed cat chasers. So, I read books about cats, every now and then. Some books, like this one, help soothe the pain of catlessness.
The art is the star of the show here. Flossie is very occasionally given a human expression, but for the most part, she's a three-dimensional cat. You'd have no trouble recognizing that belly when she's deeply asleep, or peering from the top of a cardboard box, should you have to spot her in a kitty line-up.
The text can be a bit droll at times, such as stating that Flossie is "and enthusiastic gardener" and shows her digging up a flower bed.
I, too, enjoy sleeping, destroying Christmas ornaments and hate trips to the vet. Rock on, Flossie. Since this book was originally published in 1986, I can only hope that Flossie lived her best life all of her life. Since she lived in London, chances are, she did.
This is another book my mother dug up and gave to me when I was pregnant so I could read it to my daughter. We replace “Flossie” with “Pixie” (our cats name) and “London” with the place we live. I love this book so much.
I also love that the illustrations are by the author, and wowwww they are gorgeous. Ruth Brown didn’t have to go so hard but she did.
Little Cherub and I both love Ruth Brown's detailed illustrations (a new discovery for me - I hadn't come across her books with my two older daughters). This book is little more than a series of cat pictures, but they are beautifully done and they hold Cherub's interest. The text is only one sentence per page, and the language is old for Cherub, but she still likes to fill in the end of the sentence for me.
