By the title, I thought this book was a romance, but the back of the book seemed to prove otherwise. Turns out, a hungry loop is what the rope form is called when circling a loop of rope overhead and throwing it around a calf's neck. Makes a lot of sense for the book's title since Tres Boomer's dream is to rope cattle in a rodeo circuit. However, the main character DID have a crush, and it was fun to see how that played out.
Tres Boomer wants a roping horse. He finally strikes a deal with his grandfather to buy a horse named Mariah - but it seems like he got the short end of the stick, and wonders if he will ever get a roping horse.
His adventures on the ranch were fun to read about. Sissy Belle was a riot. XD
Tres's interaction with Robin were nice too. :)
I really enjoyed the book. The writing style perfectly captured a Texas ranch setting and I liked Tres's character. If it hadn't been for the mild cursing, would have given four stars. I didn't expect it in a kid's book published in 1990. It wasn't rampant enough for me to put it down, but I wish it hadn't been there so I could give it four stars.
