I think this book is fantastic. It's great to use just as you would any other cookbook- flick through and just find something you fancy, or you can use it in a targeted way- look up recipes specifically using things you know are in season or are grown locally for example. What I love about it most though is its description of each item within its family, what it should look/taste like, when/where to buy it, and how to prepare and cook it. This aspect of the book has helped me be much more adventurous with new fruits and veges- if I see something in the shop I'm not familiar with, instead of thinking 'gee I'd love to try that but I have no idea what to do with it', I grab it straight away and know I will find all the information I need in this book. Brilliant. The only reason it doesn't get 5 stars is beacuse you only get a handful of recipes with each family group. But these are a really good introduction to help you understand what flavours and textures work with each item and then you can go on to experiment knowing that you're comfortable with that ingredient.
I was lucky--I bought this cookbook for only fifty cents at a yard sale. Otherwise, even though I love many of the recipes and it is chock full of information and great photos of all kinds of fruits and veggies, I'd be sending it back. Why? The print font of the recipes is small, so tiny that I have to either put my eyes right up to the book and squint or else use a magnifying glass each time I glance at it--and since I like to check a recipe frequently as I cook, this gets to be annoying. Good recipes. Small print. If you have great eyes, I recommend it. Otherwise, get ready to visit your eye doctor.
I've been looking for more veggie-themed recipes lately and thought this book would help, so I picked it up at the library yesterday while I was browsing. I definitely marked more desserts than entrees, but found a few good recipes like Spinach in Filo with Three Cheeses and Gnocchi with Oyster Mushrooms. I think the only reason I would give it three instead of two stars was because of the fruit and veg dictionary parts at the beginning of each section, as they were very thorough and I discovered some things I've never heard of or seen before. 3 stars.
