Pseudonym of Doris Simpson, Anthea Cohen, worked as an antiques buyer, shoe salesperson, and was a state registered nurse. She lived on the Isle of Wight. She was the creator of the much beloved anti-hero 'Agnes Carmichael', a nurse who avenges wrongs by killing the culprits. She died in 2006.
A fun satire of hospitals, hospital personalities, customs, etc. Originally written for Nursing Mirror (a newspaper? a magazine?) this definitely reads as an inside joke about behind the scenes of hospital operation... in the UK, in the 1960s. It's definitely "of its time" but not in any egregious way. I can't help thinking that Anthea Cohen would've been a fun person to have a cup of tea with.
