It seems to Mara Austin that the Lifelights have always been a part of her life. They’re a secret she cherishes, the nearest thing to a family that she has and the one anomaly in her otherwise predictable existence. On the day of her 22nd Birthday things begin to change. An American businessman, Sebastian Oran, visits ‘The Tea Cosy’ café where Mara works and a telepathic voice invades her mind. Drawn to Sebastian, Mara’s main concern is for the Lifelights. It wouldn’t do for someone like him to find out about them… But as attraction is transformed into a deeper bond, the result is unexpected. ‘Her’ secret reveals a truth that spans the globe - a supernatural species with the power to enlighten or destroy. Firstly, Alina Voyce is a pseudonym. In the real world she answers to the name 'Sue Grainger'.

She is a wife, the mother of two adults (at least, that's what the law calls them - but they're fighting it), and has lived in East Yorkshire, England, for her entire life. It's an area she's proud to call 'home'.

Naturally creative, she's an author, an artist, and enjoys baking and decorating cakes for her family and friends. She's also a keen observer of the world around her, and has a passion for music that ranges from classical, to country, to rock.

The stories she writes are a mesh of ideas generated by who she is and who she imagines herself being as part of the plot. The world is a fascinating place, and the people she meets a constant source of inspiration. There are so many talented people out there, so many lifestyles, and so many points of view...

I did not love this book particularly much. While cool in concept, beings that coexist with humans that are essentially energy, I felt like it took forever for the story to get started and for the reader to get information. The characters felt underdeveloped. And it was annoying that the main character didn’t feel the need to get more information about what was happening to her. Also there was way too much sex. It was excessive and unnecessary and this is coming from someone who is a huge proponent of sex in movies and books.

When I was first introduced to the Lifelights by way of the couple of sample chapters, I found that I NEEDED to know exactly what they were exactly, guessing all sorts of things. Having read the entire story now, I can say that they are truly an amazing out of the box concept which, as a writer myself, I always fully appreciate - a must for me with any book - most unusual and impressive in their conception indeed.

For me this work had elements of Mills and Boons or a Harlequin romance sprinkled throughout (but then I've never read any of those so what do I know?) But a love story here, the difference being, I would guess, that Lifelights applies itself with a more modern, paranormal, supernatural technique that romance readers will no doubt enjoy what with all that undying and eternal love aspect at the very heart of it - if you'll pardon the pun.

That said, there is skulduggery afoot as well of course, and when I arrived at the meat of the story; the plot, I found myself surprised; I certainly didn't see it coming. A simple enough issue and unusual in itself, but one that gets escalated to much greater heights to arrive at the centre of something more sinister on a global level - the elements of which are peppered in throughout the romance aspect and all centered around the main character struggling and adapting to the truth of what her life and her ancestry has always been about.

Very original, I have to say. It will be interesting to see where the Lifelights series takes its characters and how they evolve.

Alina Voyce has created the ultimate novel; a unique blend of sci-fi, adventure, and romance that keeps you on edge to the very last page.

Until her 22nd birthday, Mara has led a fairly uneventful life, with the exception of the Lifelights. Instinctively, she has kept their existence a secret, though she has no concept of what they are or where they come from. To Mara, they are as close and dear to her as family.

Then sexy Sebastian enters the Tea Cozy where she works, and Mara's life is irrevocably changed forever. Irresistibly drawn to him, Mara must learn to trust him with her heart as well as her life. As Sebastian gradually teaches her about the Lifelights and their purpose on earth, she is swept into a world that is both fascinating and frightening. Mara discovers a supernatural species with infinite energy that has the power to enlighten the earth...or destroy it.

Lifelights is truly one of the most beautifully written novels I have ever read. I fell in love with Mara and Sebastian, and am anxiously awaiting the release of the next Lifelights novel in the series.

I read the final book in the series before I read this one. This makes writing a review a little difficult since I know how the whole saga ends.

I was struck again, as I was in New Age Light, by the originality of the concept. The central idea is that there are beings composed of energy who have lived on earth for billions of years and who pass among us as human. That, by itself might be standard science fiction fare. But here’s the clever bit – Lifelights are bonded for eternity, but in each of their cycles of renewal they have to find their partner again.

This is science fiction crossed with romance. And the Lifelights idea allows Alina Voyce to play brilliantly with one of the central tropes of romance – “This thing is bigger than both of us”, “we’re meant to be together”, “it’s as if we always knew each other”. All these things are literally true of the Lifelights. I loved the wit and cleverness of the idea, and I’m not even a fan of romance.

There is, of course, adventure too as Mara, Sebastian and the other Lifelights begin their mortal combat with Synergy.

I first read this on webook as it was being written. The story is unique, and I kick myself for not thinking of it first. It's so hard to find a story as fresh as this, that I honestly can't say, "It's like this other book." There's nothing else like it. I love it, have read it several times, recommended it to all my friends, love the sequel, and can't wait to read 21st Century Light!!

A perfectly agreeable, readable, enjoyable example of errr... I'm not sure what genre I'd call it. It's something like British indie paranormal chick-lit with a dash of X-Men thrown in? However you want to pigeonhole it, I think most people would enjoy it. Apart from "British indie", it's not really my preferred genre, yet I easily saw it through to the end and enjoyed it perhaps rather more than I'd like to admit. Voyce's writing style is very fluid, yet prosaic enough without becoming stodgy. I think this is her first book - if so, she will surely become a wonderful and well-known writer.

Lifelights (The Lifelight Series, #1) by Alina Voyce

Mara Austin works at The Tea Cosy Cafe, she does not have much in life, no family just the Lifelights that only she can see. They are her comfort and joy. One day and American named Sebastian shows up, he is telepathic and talks to her mind. She is not ready to share her secret with him. But as they get closer she wonders what needs to be shared with him.

A very original story. Mara is very likable, young and innocent. Sebastian adds some mystery, they make an unusual pair. A fun story i feel y/a and adults will enjoy.

I absolutely loved this book! (Spoiler)

The tension and attraction between Sebastian and Mara was intense, and Alina seemed to capture a whole new level of passion between these two. This is definitely one I'd recommend, the concept of energy and life cycles is actually pretty clever and very interesting. Loved the characters as well, especially Jennie, she reminds me of a close friend of mine. Folios stuff, I'll be starting book two here shortly.

Great start to a series. An interesting concept of beings of energy living among us. Not aliens, they've been here all the time since the "Big Bang". However, some humans have now discovered they are here and want to capture them and harness their power. There is humour, romance and danger in this story. I will definitely be reading the next one.

What an amazing story, full of romance, intrigue and adventure. You're introduced to the Lifelights and left wanting to stay in their world to learn more about them. This is paranormal romance the way it's meant to be. Bravo :D
