Rate this book
Fiction. A young man and his friend embark on a trip to Columbia, a country immersed in civil war. They soon make friends there and become deeply involved in their lives. Their own lives change as they are confronted with the fear, despair, and corruption hidden everywhere. But they also encounter another essential element of life in a war the extreme passion and love that drive and illuminate the people they meet. Marc Atherton has written here his first and only novel, a poignant tale that he was unable to survive. He died 6 months after finishing this masterpiece.

I would give it 6 stars if I could ,this is some real still unfound treasure. Marc Atherton didn't need action or tragic deaths to make you feel something, just the description of the "simple" and "basic" lives of the strangers you meet during a violant civil war.

"It is not the strategies of a civil war that are being described in this work , but war's heavy, weighing invisibility, the same way love's impalpable presence is evoked"

The entire book is about love, the idea that you can find love everywhere ,even in the most violent places, and that might actually be the place where love is the purest. Although people go away with their secrets as suddenly as they came.
Every piece of Marc's story was perfect, loved every word of his book and I only wished we could have gotten more of his talent. I can't explain well enough how I found myself in his book.

"The result is an extraordinary novel—Marc Atherton’s first and only novel, a poignant tale that he was unable to survive. He died six months after finishing this masterpiece."

He died at 28, and it only hurts more for the fact that I got this book from his sister.
Marc actually traveled to Colombia to write this book, he was inspired by what he saw there. And at the end of his book ,we learn something which makes us understand the main character might die soon, the fact that the author dies after 6 months of writing this is just mind blowing.
