Rate this book
First, there was The Servant, the ever-popular, bestselling book by James C. Hunter that told readers an absorbing tale and exposed the timeless principles of servant leadership. And now the follow-up, Becoming a Servant Leader, guides readers through the important next step of putting those principles into action, offering a roadmap to servant leadership. In a thoughtful and accessible manner, the author sets the foundation by explaining exactly what leadership is, and what it is not, effectively uncovering the hidden virtues and timeless qualities essential for effective servant leadership. Citing historical examples such as Jesus Christ, Gandhi, Mother Teresa, and Martin Luther King Jr., Hunter argues that authority and influence must be built on service and sacrifice, and only after this has occurred can leaders establish healthy relationships and meet the legitimate needs of those entrusted to their care. The principles in this invaluable book are based on time-tested philosophies crafted over the years and ultimately woven together and integrated with modern-day practices and applications, with a focus on the reality of our rapidly changing world and the emerging, ultra-competitive global markets. Beginning with the why but emphasizing how to put it into action, the author swiftly walks readers through all the essential elements of servant leadership. Differentiating between power and authority and explaining that while management is what we do, leadership is who we are, the author's simple advice and step-by-step instructions give readers the tools they need to implement the principles of servant leadership. The result is faithful support and the ability to sustain andcontinually improve performance and to thrive in the marketplace. Readers will find that Becoming a Servant Leader provides the platform for effective leadership, as well as lasting and meaningful success.

This book has been sitting on my "to-read" list for years after many recommendations, and given it's a quick book to read, I finally read it during an indoor bike ride today. It took just 30 minutes, and while it's more or less a very basic business parable, it was a worthy book to read.
