The Sisters, Texas #16

Dollars or Death

Rate this book
A popular TV game show is filming in The Sisters, and everyone wants their chance to win instant cash on Dollars or Death. The final rounds are called Sudden Death but for one unlucky player, it’s not just sudden. It’s final. That’s not the only chaos taking place in Madison deCordova’s life. In a Pinch Professional Services is temping at 3 G Fun Station in Riverton, and someone isn’t playing by the rules. There are eerie similarities to a previous crime ring operating here in The Sisters, but Madison knows that’s crazy. Evil can’t squeeze past the steel bars of prison, can it?

Completing the three-ring circus is a feud between Counselman Reggie Carr and The Sisters’ ever popular Bunco games. Granny Bert and Wanda Shanks are leading the fight to push back. Along with Derron, the aging women sign up as contestants for Dollars or Death, which is chaos within itself.

It’s hardly fun and games when a disturbing link is discovered between all three dramas. It’s downright murder.

Best-selling indie and hybrid author Becki Willis loves crafting stories with believable characters in believable situations. Many of her stories stem from her own personal experiences. (No worries; she's never actually murdered anyone).

When she’s not plotting danger and adventure for her imaginary friends, Becki enjoys reading, spending time with her family, unraveling a good mystery (real or imagined), dark chocolate, and a good cup of coffee.

A professed history geek, Becki often weaves pieces of the past into her novels. Family is a central theme in her stories and in her life. She and her husband enjoy traveling but believe coming home to their Texas ranch is the best part of any trip.

Becki has won numerous awards—including two Killer Nashville Silver Falchion Awards, InD’Tale’s coveted RONE, and been named Finalist for two Claymore Awards—but feels the real compliments come from her readers. Drop in for an e-visit anytime at beckiwillis.ccp@gmail.com, or www.beckiwillis.com.

What can I say, except kudos to Becki Willis. I love this series and this book was a great addition. I’ve missed the Sisters and was ecstatic when this book came out, and I wasn’t disappointed. The book was well written with a creative storyline that showcased the regular characters quirkiness and personalities. The mystery was well plotted, with a few red herrings sprinkled in causing me to keep guessing until the end. And even then I was taken by surprise. This is definitely a book you don’t want to miss!

I received an arc of this book and voluntarily provided a review.

In this book the game show Dollars or Death takes center stage. Granny Bert and her team are on a game show being filmed in The Sisters (they didn't learn after the last show :D ). Granny and Councilman Reggie are always at odds with each other. Someone takes advantage of that feud and sets up Granny for Reggie's murder. Meanwhile Maddie's latest job for In A Pinch Professional Services is filling in for the owner of 3G Fun Station in the next town while he recovers from surgery. She deals with a wide variety of customers - one of which the police find dead in a compromising situation. One detective is not a fan of Chief deCordova and has no problem trying to pin the murder on Maddy. This story is different from the others as the murders are not the main focus this time. Still a great story. Make sure you read the series in order for all the characters to make sense. I received an ARC and I am voluntarily reviewing it.

I LOVE this series, and I anxiously await the next book in this lineup. Becki Willis is a master in the art of character development. Her characters are so relatable to the reader. I feel like I know them! So many topics are lingering in the background… like elders still making valuable contributions to a community (Granny Bert) and dealing with an empty nest (Madison relating to this change). This makes it easy for the reader to relate to the storyline. Please keep writing, Becki! We love your stories!

Town nuisance, Reggie Carr arranged to have The Sisters ‘randomly chosen’ for a game show just as the poker games start again plus three murdered bodies turn up over town, Maddie’s a suspect in two and Granny Bert’s a suspect in one! Whoever said nothing happens in The Sisters must’ve come when Granny Bert and Maddie were both out of town.

An extremely entertaining read. Maddie's adventures as a temporary employee are always very different and undoubtedly lead her to stumble across a dead body. This time it's more than one. She's already stressed out because her chicks are leaving the nest. Then Granny Bert gets involved in a crazy tv game show, which is quite funny.

Another great story from the Sisters. Once again, Maddy and Brash show that it takes teamwork to protect their community from the criminal element. This story had some twists and turns before all the culprits are caught.

Some head scratching (detectives never spoke to the bartender?), some suspense (but questions there, too) but mainly enjoyment at being back with friends in The Sisters. Madison was not so likeable in this book, snapping at family and friends. Things wrapped up a bit quickly, also.

Gambling, gaming and a TV show make this one a bit different from the others in the series. I like the fixes that Maddy gets into in her temp agency- ad there is a sense of humor that runs through these mystery stories.

This is one of my favorite series and I am always glad when the next book comes out. It's hard to keep a series fresh and exciting and Becki does a wonderful job! The characters are quirky and lovable and the antics as usual do not disappoint! I highly recommend this book and the whole series!
