In a land where justice was found in the barrel of a gun and the line between a decent man and an outlaw was often too thinly drawn, two extraordinary sisters struggled to survive and fought for their freedom. Rebecca, as beautiful and untamable as the mountains of Utah, was forced to marry a brutal polygamist, but she refused to surrender her dream. And Katie risked her life so Rebecca might have a chance for freedom. And she risked everything else to establish a sprawling ranch in the midst of an expanding nation--and to prove that a woman could do it.
Gary McCarthy is the author of fourteen American historical novels and thirty-four westerns published by many of New York's major publishing houses. He has over three million books in print and continues to research and write his Canyon Country novels.
Growing up with horses and living in California, Nevada and Arizona, Gary is well suited to writing about the American West. He received his B.S. degree in Animal Science and an M.S. in Agricultural Economics. He has a keen interest in Native American cultures, especially the Hopi, Navajo, Havasupai and Haulapai who live in Northern Arizona.
Gary and his wife Jane live in Arizona and have often ridden horses and hiked in the Kaibab and Coconino National Forests. Gary is always looking for new stories set in the American West and considers the research to be among his most favorite pursuits.
Two sisters trying to make their own way in pioneer Wyoming, one as a sheep rancher, one as a doctor. I didn't feel like the relationships in this book were real. Plus, the writing style was too simple, and the story didn't hold my interest.
A frontier saga spanning several books, Sisters of the Wyoming Mountains is a strong enough work that it can stand alone. I did download this book for free to read on Kindle, but it would be worth paying for. It's a great story and uses the history of the clashes of the polygamous sect of the Mormon church versus the families who have been defeated in their shot at the gold rush.
The drive of the plot is that the beautiful teenaged sisters are trying to save their father from an almost certain death, so they agree to live in the polygamous settlement of Temple City for a time and be preached to in hopes that they will convert to the church's teachings and let their personalities be washed away as yet another "sister wife."
Sisters of the Wyoming Mountains is a well told western adventure story; all your emotions will be brought to the surface as this story progresses. It is a lively experience of two sisters. As a reader, I went the full gambit of thrilling to the main characters life struggles, and how they are forced to survive in the Wild West in mid-1800. There are many twists in this story. I would certainly recommend the reading of this story, the characters are all believable, and you will love the heroes or hate the villains with gusto.
Enjoyed this book. Having been born and raised in Wyoming I understand the draw of this State. This story is about the hardships faced by two sisters Rebecca and Katie, young but determined and strong willed. A journey from Nevada through Utah and to Wyoming. A time when women really had no rights to property, limited career choices etc. Yet these sisters find a way through hardships to survive, and thrive. They don't give up . Worth a read.
