Ringside Romance #2

Ring Around My Heart

Rate this book
Alexandra Hayes couldn't decide which she hated more: the skintight silver lame shorts encasing the powerful thighs of the hulking wrestler who stood before her, or the pink heart that stretched across his firm buns. Loverboy Luke needed an image makeover, all right. And she desperately needed this job. But how would she possibly turn the sport's biggest badboy into the hero the league craved? Especially when looking at his bare chest made her want to take him down on the mats herself.

Luke prided himself on his reputation of sweeping women off their feet and giving them a night to remember. His appearance was his armor, protecting him from the pain of his past. Lately, though, whenever he looked into the amber eyes of his new publicist, his concentration went from headlocks to liplocks, from the wrestling ring to a ring that could really change his life--for Alexandra was taking an unbreakable hold on his heart.

This is probably more a 3.5 but I wasn't expecting much and was super pleased to get that high a rating from it so I rounded up.

Lexy owns a struggling PR business. The stakes are high for her since she has a young son to support so when a BAM wrestling asks them to turn their star "heel" into a hero and change their brand image to family friendly, she balks but ultimately accepts. The money is just too good.

Luke "Loverboy" Silver can hardly believe it when Lexy walks through the door at the arena. She'd been his elementary school crush but of course she doesn't see the shy science nerd when she looks at him. She sees the image he has worked so hard to cultivate -steroid aided muscle bound bod with a killer smile and a way with the ladies. He doesn't want her to see beyond that and works hard at getting her to quit but Lexy has too much riding on this to let him drive her off. Slowly the two begin to build a relationship and Lexy starts to learn about the man behind the image. But when he lets her learn all his secrets will she embrace him completely or turn away in disgust?

I thought this book struck the just right balance between serious and silly to deliver a humorous romance with some meat to it. Luke's issues were typical romance stuff - taking responsibility for things that weren't really his fault, parental issues etc. - but they don't get solved by the mojo of having Lexy in his life. They are solved, just through more realistic means (like conversations with the people he had issues with), which I appreciated.

I was also thankful for the sex scenes not coming till 2/3 of the way through the book. I felt at that point it really was about lovemaking and both characters could put their hearts as well as bodies into it.

ETA I also liked how the sport of professional wrestling was handled. I learned a bit but it didn't involve reading a bunch of clunky dialogue discussing why/where/when of everything.

Overall, I liked it and will look for other books by the author.

I verily enjoyed reading Ms. White's heart warming romance Luke is a lost soul hiding behind an image he perfected over the years to cope with years of guilt loss and emotional baggage from childhood and here comes Alexandra who turns his world upside down and opens his wounds so that they can heal right. She makes him vulnerable and feel like he wants to be something more. They were good together I loved the story line and plot though I guess who the secret sponser was from the begging though I did doubt myself alittle but I was right. Ring Around My Heart didnt seem like a comedy to me but that didnt take anything away from the book, The ONE thing that got on my nerve was the authors liberal use if the word ambled he ambled she ambled, they didnt 'walk' any where some other word please that doesnt make them sound old. Seriously when I think amble I think of my grandmother walking around from one place to anothe. A bot of a waddle walk in my imagination.

Cover does not match the book. Alrighty then... H/h knew each other as kids. Lots happened, including him eventually leaving home. He's convinced he's a loser. She just wants her childhood friend back. Much angst along the way (and not much in the way of comedy. As I said, the cover is misleading). Eventually, like within the last few chapters, he finds his dad is involved in their reacquaintence, throws a fit, and runs off. I would greatly prefer conflict not to be so close to the flippin' end of the book, especially this sort of conflict.
