Night Mischief

Rate this book
New York Times bestselling author Nina Bruhns presents one of her most beloved titles, NIGHT MISCHIEF, part of the DARK ENCHANTMENTS series, which includes both full length romance novels as well as short novellas such as this book's companion story, LORD WESTON, VAMPIRE SLAYER.

NIGHT MISCHIEF

What good could come of a bargain with the devil?

Lady Dawn Maybank takes her responsibilities to the Cadre, a secret order of demon hunters, very seriously. She never imagines that a thoughtlessly worded university lecture could conjure up her worst nightmare--a demon of vengeance. Or that this demon, Galen McManus, will propose a trade that could finally earn her the respect she's sought her entire life. But dare she accept? For in exchange for the Demon Stone, a long-lost diamond for which her father the earl has been searching his whole life, Dawn must spend five nights in the sinfully handsome demon's bed.

When bad boys go good...

But Dawn is haunted by a fatal flaw she is desperate to hide from the rest of the world. And little does she know that Galen's real objective is to weave his own brand of cosmic justice upon her. But in the end, the sinister net the arrogant demon has woven about her traps his most unsuspecting victim yet--himself. And for the most unlikely of reasons--love.

DARK ENCHANTMENTS - the series

Four hundred years ago a secret, hermetic order was created by the first Earl of St. Yve and a handful of initiates who pledged their lives to keep the world safe from evil paranormal beings. Ever since, the Cadre has been dedicated to maintaining the delicate balance between the mortal and Dark realms through research and observation of otherworldly entities. Seldom does the Cadre interfere.

But not all mortals seek peaceful understanding between the realms. In recent decades, an opposing force has been created by the British Security Service. This covert group, called P-Cell, has but one directive-- destroy paranormal creatures of all kinds.

As the two organizations fight faithfully for their separate causes, unbeknownst to either of them the dark forces of evil gather, preparing to overtake the mortal realm....

Setting:
London – present day; Anachronistic Research; St Yve Manor; townhouse in Mayfair;

Theme:
Love; the power of love; the nature of humanity

Characters:
Professor Dawn Maybank – Daughter of the head of the Cadre – those who study and control paranormals, protecting humanity , through magic – she is head of the school, and not yet an adept (the highest level), and feels a disappointment to her father and sister; she has a bit of a wild side – break the rules side… Innocently reads a simple spell in class that is to fulfill her deepest desire (vengeance against those who annoy her), and calls Galen from the otherside.

Galen McManus - daemon sapiens (human looking) – a vengeance demon; though a dark demon, he can see that he is not evil, and is necessary to balance humanity; he fulfills ones requests for vengeance, but then the vengeance is born by the perpetrator times 10. He doesn’t feel emotions, except for lust and anger. Won the Saxon Stone (a diamond taken from the St Yvs’ crown)

Aurora Maybank – Dawn’s older sister – hates demons as she was almost seduced by a lust demon when she was 17, until her father rescued her at the last minute, imprisoning him in a crystal in the basement. She wants to protect Dawn from making the same mistakes.

Grigori & Rofocacle – high demons – set in motion sending Galen to get access to St Yve’s dungeon to retrieve demons locked in the stone.

Summary:
Galen tempts Dawn into a bargain – 5 days of sex for the Saxon Stone that her father wants so badly. His real reason is to get close to Dawn to evoke the vengeance – her deepest desire – that she has spelled.

And though Dawn wants to step back… he won’t allow it, overwhelming her with his sexual prowess… but when he might take her soul, making her his familiar and totally submissive to his will by his demon tongue sliding down her throat to her heart, he cannot do it… and by the 3rd night they are in love – she can feel his feelings and vice versa…

And when he finds out what the demon lords intend, he is given 24 hours – that he plans to spend with Dawn – then to face his consequences and die at the demon lord’s hands, as he will not betray Dawn and lead them into the castle.

But she talks him into going to her townhouse… where the bad guys end up being… and her sister rescues her in the nick of time… but her sister takes Galen’s soul in a crystal – but when Aurora sees his deep love for his sister, and her love for him, she breaks the crystal freeing him to be with Dawn, and to join the Cadre.

4 1/2 Stars! ~ Lady Dawn Maybridge has played second fiddle to her twin sister Aurora all her life and she’s tired of never measuring up in her father’s eyes. So when a devilishly handsome demon approaches her with a bargain that will win her the Demon Stone, a diamond that her father has been searching for all his life, Dawn is sorely tempted to accept. Galin McManus is a vengence demon masquerading as an incubus, a lust demon. He uses their sexual chemistry against Dawn’s formidable defenses, and barters the Demon Stone for five nights in his bed. Dawn is reluctant but she can’t help her overpowering desire for Galin, and when their nights of passion begin she’s afraid of losing more than just her soul to the demon, she’s afraid she’ll lose her heart. Gavin too becomes confused by the bond that continues to grow stronger between them. Can it be possible that he is coming to have feelings for her? But what will happen when Dawn discovers his true purpose, that he’s been summoned to enact vengence; vengence on those that have crossed her, which include her sister Aurora.

Wow! I was wondering how Ms. Bruhns was going to make a hero out of demon. While Galin comes on the scene as holding mistaken beliefs, once he learns from Dawn the true nature of humans, he regrets his past. As in all great romances, the heroine teaches the hero that he is indeed a hero and very much capable of feeling intense love. Galin makes a wonderful hero; his protective instincts and desire to ease her pain make him more human than he’d ever thought possible. Dawn is strong but she has to overcome her vulnerabilities when it comes to pleasing her father and sister. Their approval means a lot to Dawn, even though she behaves as if it doesn’t. I loved this story. Not only for the intrigue introduced about the dark realm, but for the growth both Galin and Dawn experience as their bond grows stronger. This one’s a pager turner and have the fan handy as the love scenes scorch most of those pages!

This was about a woman who is a demon hunter. She also teaches classes and one day reads a spell out loud to her class. Then a demon comes to visit based on what she said in her spell. He wants five nights with her in exchange for a demon diamond that has special meaning to her family.

Nina Bruhns has created a superb story with “Night Mischief”, at first it seems like simply a nice paranormal romance but her development of the characters Dawn and Galen show depth and progression that is not often found in these types of books.
